[Spoiler Warning] Translated article from Swedish PC GAMER (June 2004)

damn i never thought that 1 email that i sent valve so long ago would have snowballed into such a big misunderstanding

seriously. so many people are confused about that.

Was it you FlyingDebris?

Naughty boy, look at the worldwide confusion you've caused! :p

What is confusing? i missed it... tell me.. i've been gone for a week

We're pretty sure that PC Gamer got a hold of one of the eMails in the Info thread here and got the wrong impression from it. It said that VALVe had fiddled around with a mock-up drivable version of the Strider to test how legged vehicles would work, and some of us think that PC Gamer misinterpreted that to mean VALVe were making the Strider a drivable vehicle...

PC Gamer franchises the world over keep repeating that the Strider is drivable, but with what we know here, it seems quite unlikely that that would be so...

In fact, I think they even said it wasn't drivable, at some point...

all i did was ask gabe if it was possible to mod in giant 2 legged robots (battlemechs) into hl2 and have them be affected by physics.

he said that yes you technically could and that they had even messed around with a drivable strider for their own amusement

he never said that the striders would be drivable in game

heh world wide confusion...dude you literally got a major publication hyping stuff that didn't exist, nasty spreader of chaos.

"Some new disgustees were introduced in the trilogy's second title..."

What, trilogy? So there wont be a HL4?

Indeed, if I were FlyingDebris I would wait for the feds to knock....

Yup, pretty sure it'll only be a trilogy. Wonder what they'll make after HL3? I reckon VALVe would be good at RPGs...

And there it is, from the sender of the eMail himself. I hope the PC Gamer guys who first read the eMail read all this. Might finally dispel the rumours.

May the curse of 10,000+ HL fans worldwide be on you.:p

J/k

Thanks for the response guys.

Let me just get this straight though; It is because of ONE LITTLE E-MAIL that the ENTIRE H-L 2 community has been divided in "Vehicle Strider" believers and "Strider NOT vehicle" believers ?? I've read about these rumors for a while too and never really figured out what was true or not.

And just to clarify once more;

Striders were built to walk on the sea BED. NOT on the water itself, but on the BOTTOM of the sea.

(Can't wait for the next article I get to translate and post here (is it wierd that I actually ENJOY three hour's work of translating ??).) :)

Yeah, it seems that because of a misinterpretation FlyingDebris' eMail reply, in which VALVe stated that they had made a driveable Strider for their own amusement, people the world over now think the Striders are driveable.

They don't even seem to have any place at all for a pilot to get in or out of. And they seem to be living things.

they look living to me, possibly with the built in gun, then again the gun could be biological like the Hive Hand. Just cuz they don't bleed, dont mean they aint animals, they could have a really strong exo-skeliton, like the big fux0r in HL, the bullets just ricochet off.

Agreed. The carapace around the... Well... "Head", I suppose seems really thick. And on the legs too. I'm beginning to agree with those who say that the knee joints would be the most vulnerable point...

Yeah, and piloting a strider would make it a peice of cake to clear that level - you'd be so overpowered.

yeah the video's/AI arent going to show/know the weaknesses, thats where the challenge comes into for the player.. to smash away at the knee joints without gettin skewerd.... hence the crow bar ;-)

AWESOME! So glad we have a new article to ponder about.

The new strider info sounds AWESOME!

Although they mistakenly thought that Alyx being interactive meant that you could play as her, which is NOT the case.

HAHAHAH! I TOLD YOU ALL!!!

i told you from the start the strider was a vehicle, with a pilot, but did you listen? NOOOOOOOoooOOOoooOoOoOOOo

Girlie mocking voice:"its a biomechanical alien mr.reaperman!"

That's merely a guess. Just because some Swedish magazine thinks they are driven doesn't mean they are.

It's not like Valve told them that they have pilots. Fool.

They probably have some kind of remote control.

(Sorry for the double post)

"What we have seen is NOTHING of what will be coming."

that's what I like to hear :afro:

Hehe, I found it in a local ICA store - it's been out for quite some time. The thing is that I thought I'd already bought that issue, but it turned out that it was another mag I had purchased. Man, you shoudda seen my feetsurfin' speed over there once I found out :E
I need to go to my ICA store soon then too. GB has started with their HAMTARO-ice cream now. MUST buy at least 10 :E

it probably would have been best to just keep that to yourself. I mean, spoiler tags or no, it is beta info, and they don't seem to like that around here. I'll just pretend i didn't read that...

Yay, Half-Life 2 is so going to kick ass. I can't wait, excellent read!

why? without something to back up my statements i just look like a moron...

i'm just saying the mods and a lot of people get pretty angry about beta spoilers and info. I don't really care, that much, i could hear the whole story and still not care, i'd play the game and be amazed nonetheless. But still, other peoples get really mad about reading beta info.

A mod will probably warn you about posting the beta info, i'm just trying to let you know.

well, i did put it in spoiler tags.... with a warning that the tags contained an actual spoiler...

but i am banned, thats ok.... it was meant to be :)

Guys posting beta info in a spoiler tag is still posting it. It ain't allowed so don't do it!

Dude! Posting beta info makes you look like a bigger moron. Lesser of two evils...

My smile was like the Grand Canyon when I red/wrote that.
However, before the community mods start prosecuting for "Massive Manipulating of Fellow Community Members" I feel obliged to tell you that the word "NOTHING" was NOT, I repeat, NOT written with capital letters !
I'm sorry you guys, I just couldn't contain my excitement.

I think it will be a very "unstable" / uncertain / hesistant situation the first time I get to go up against a Strider. Until I've found out where the best place is to hit 'em - and with what weapon/s. I'm sure I'll be standing there emptying mag after mag only to find out that I could have tripped that thing with a crowbar hit to it's lower "feet" or something.

(Hehe, unless you don't get any hints from the game or the manual - can you imagine how filled this board might get with threads like "How can you kill the Striders ?" Better make up a sticky for that one right away...) :E

What's so special about this articel, I mean, didn't you know this before?

Not all of it.

We know a little about the other resistance force now, we know there will be different types of striders, we know that Barney is the leader of the resistance force that "we" are on. And we know that scanners give color signals indicating various things about your status. We are reassured that C17 in the beginning of the game will be a place to wonder around for hours.

Anyones welcome to add to the list.

Heh, PC Gamer had the thing about Scanner colours ages ago...

's not a bad article, it just seems, apart from the new stuff, a little samey to me...
