Because this review is 8 pages long there is way too much to type here but I can post scans. Just I want to check can we post scans here? If not then anyone who wants them can PM me.
Although one thing I will say cos it's kinda important about the game. It mentions at the end. All patches for the game in future will be done through EA downloader. Also there is no autosave in the game which means that if the game crashes you could lose hours of work (as had happened a few times to the reviewer)
EDIT: I will try and post some details here though.
The review opens with an important statement : "Spore falls a little short of its promise at every stage, but bear in mind that its concept is as close as we've come to a game incarnation of the lord our god."
He loved the user creations so much that he wished he could ban the default creatures by maxis but couldn't.
The reviewer had mentioned the question whether spore was a game or a toy and the answer he says is long and complicated.
The cell stage is a blend of toy and game. The creature stage is an awkward conflict of game and toy. The tribe stage is all game and no toy. The civ stage is all toy and not enough game. Then the space stage is a huge game with lots of little toys if you get bored.
The cell stage is the smartest combination of spore's elements.
In the creature stage you can NOT choose to play as any of the creatures imported from the creature creator. They will inhabit the world but you can't play as a race of them until the tribal stage.
The tribal stage is a nice satisfying simplification of an RTS. Only slight downside is that no creative side to this stage really.
The civ stage is better for stats and looks for editing vehicles unlike the creature stage where parts that look right for your creature don't offer the best stats.
However the civ stage is very easy even on hard mode.
Space stage though in contrast is very hard even on easy due to constant attacks from opposing empires in a vast galaxy. And I mean vast. Due to these attacks it means exploring the universe is pretty much impossible because you need to trek back to defend your empire.
It was described as "Spore's biggest, dumbest, most easily fixable flaw, and it's going to put alot of people off what is actually the best stage."
It does get better though when you've levelled up your ship enough and get into to trading and quests it seems.
Last thoughts mentioned is that spore's triumph is that is painfully ironic. By setting out to instil a sense of wonderment at creation and majesty of the universe, it shows us that it's actually more interesting to to sit at a pc and explore the contents of other people's brains and everything that has been made by others.
