Stalker hands on single player preview

Yup probably, I pretty much got the same spec as you only a 7900GT(OCed to hell).:)

This is so ****ing sweet, I've been waiting for this game for 5 years now, this game was the reason that made me buy a PC actually!

Seriously, I feel the same way; I was in EB yesterday and I saw pre-order boxes and ads for it. There was a time where it was my #1 anticipated game, but eventually I gave up on it, now it's actually coming out in a few weeks and it's apparently great.

Yup, tbh, if the reviews continue to give such high-scores, STALKER should get a SOTY(Surprise Of The Year) award :p

its funny coz stalker is the reason i got interested in pc gaming again back in 2002 or so, i remember looking at hundreds of screenies of it at ign and just thinking the atmosphere kicked ass, ofcourse i expected the game to be out around the same time as hl2 but i really cant wait to play it in a few weeks, hope my rig can run it decently...

I pre-ordered this a week ago or so, and reading that preview has really got the juices flowing. It sounds like it will be worth the wait. I really do hope so.

Yup, only thing that has dissappointed me so far is the fact that you can't be headshotted in SP, STALKER is about realism, yet the PC is given more health than the NPCs etc, hopefully someone will mod this both to allow the PC to be headshotted in SP and to make his health like the NPCs!

what? sure you can ..there's even an icon that appears and a voice that says "headshot" in mp

No he didn't, because the devs have stated multiple times that in -SP- as in SINGLEPLAYER STERN NOT MULTIPLAYER YE LOUSY CANADIAN, you can NOT die from a headshot, nor does the same health terms apply to you as to the NPCs!
Edit: Didn't see my error until now, I apologize oh all-mighty Sternian!

why would it matter if you can get shot in the head in the game? it's not like the npc will gloat about shooting you in the head

Well, you see STALKER has always claimed to be realism, and to me, when the game is supposed to make you feel like just one STALKER out of 300, it helps if you're subject to the same 'conditions' as the other STALKERs, so the fact that you can kill NPCs with headshots easily, but they can't kill you with it, and you have more health than the NPCs, make me dislike the game, but just a little, hopefully this can easily be modded.

but that's pretty much every single game ever made ..all enemies have less health than you do except for bosses ..and really when was the last time you were taken out by an AI's headshot? would you even know you were shot in the head?

oh and take it back; I'm not a lousy canadian, you just have reading comprehension problems ;)

FFS, looks like the game won't hit the shelves in Poland until April. What the **** are they thinking ><

I'll ask again - does it come with a DX8 renderer, as the beta did? Cause that, coupled with static lightning, tripled my framerate.

I think the foundation is built upon DX8, but its capable of DX9.1

1. Incorrect, it's pretty much every MAJOR commercial game, but there are TONS and TONS of smaller games and indie games that do subject the PC to the same health.:p

2. I refuse! YE LOUSY CANADIAN! FRENCHIE!*J/k*

UnReal World, indie shareware roguelike with a tileset, survival-sim. You happy now frenchie?

shareware? Unreal world ..is that even a game? a quick search turns up some relatively unknown cprg ...it's not even listed in the majority of game websites .......so try again

and you're not insulting me by calling me "frenchie" ..I'm not french

"name one"

URW, The UnReal World, is a indie game, it's an independent shareware game.

And if you want to find the games, just go on the site called www.the-underdogs.info, it has tons and tons of abandonware and indie games.

Now just leave me the the **** alone and I'll leave you alone, sweetheart.

Do games like Operation Flashpoint and Armed and Dangerous 2 count? They seem pretty fair handed in damage dealt.

Wow, this is a strange coincidence.

4 years ago I picked up my first gaming magazine which included a preview for both Half Life 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and both seemed incredible.

The former I went on to purchase, while the later lost my interest with all the delays.

Finally, on a website dedicated to Half Life 2, I find news that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has gone gold, and is looking as good as ever! I seriously cant wait for this game (I signed up for the beta about 2 weeks ago, but no notification on it yet).

Looking forward to the final product, but in the meantime, I wanna check out any of these reviews mentioned.

Wow, this guy's a dick. An ignorant dick at that
Not really, I'm just having a bad day and taking the piss, generally I'm a nice guy.

And as thus I apologize to Captain Stern, but THERE are quite a few games out there that subject the PC to the same 'environment' as the NPC, most of them are fairly old by now though, many of them are avaible on HOTU(Home Of The Underdogs).

Does anyone know what the specs might be for this beast ?
Would be nice to know what I'm up against.

Just a thought

To quote Stern:

"the reviewer played it on a ati 1600xt, you should be fine ..on my 7800gt it looks great"

Unfocused played the beta on a P4 2.8, 1.5gb ram, 6800GT machine and said it ran a little choppy, but it was a beta, so it will most likely have received optimization for the full release.

Far Cry? When playing using the hardest difficulty settings it at least _felt_ like you could be shot in the head. I died several times just out of the blue, boom, you're dead. Also, it felt like the enemies could take pretty much the same amount of punishment as you, ie. shitloads of rounds in the chest/arms/legs without dying due to armour and only one or two in the head, depending if they were wearing a helmet or not.

In Far Cry it was pretty annoying to die from a single shot by a dude you didn't even know was in there, because there was no quick save and the save points were quite far from each other. You had to be _really_ careful and use the binoculars like no tomorrow. But I hear in STALKER there is the option to quick save, so I'd very much like to see the player being on the same level as the NPC stalkers. Health-wise, armour-wise, everything-wise. Might make the game pretty hard, but I'm a strong advocate of realism in games, and especially in this particular game.

Hopefully someone mods it soon after release. Can't wait for this game!

There's way too much optimism (blinded?) in this thread :(

I say at least be wary of that which has broken your heart before.

Thus, I am at least skeptic
