Starting New Mod - Need Help

At where it stands now, no. But right now that's how I feel about a lot of the mods I've seen.

For myself, I am always interested in weapon models that new mods offer. But I am mostly interested in new, unique, and original weapons. The same old M16, Mp5, etc gets very redundant and boring, too me.
 
Exactly. This mod brings weapons of the world all into one virtual world where you can test them out and just blast things all over the place and have a lot of fun.

I was thinking that maybe there could be singleplayer where you just get to test out your kits but also play with the hl2 engine... like 4 sp maps to test out your kits.
 
I actually have an idea for the single player part and i think itd be pretty cool. It would involve Russia, Canada, Usa, and britain and maybe France. (its time that France gets involved in a war).

Maybe you don't get what I am saying. All those guns just go *Bang* *Bang* *Bang*. It's boring, too me. I look for mods that have weapons with new capabilities and features, once that I have never seen before. That interests me.

The weapons aren't everything a mod should offer. Gameplay is key. Sure, you want to offer many weapons for choice, but as I said before it's been done, the whole run around and shoot things. It needs more.

Alright. It would take place in 2014. Russia has discoverd a unkown base in the arctic ocean just above canada that contains unkown and mysterious weapons of mass destruction. No one knows of this base except russia untill a bunch of canadian soldiers a sent on a survival training mission in the Arctic region. There chopper gets shot down by the russians and you are in it and only one other survives... the pilot. No one knows that you have been shot down and they wont know that something is wrong until one month has passed since that was the length of the training mission. So you do some recon and stuff and its just white and blizzardy and you have to be all stealthy and stuff. and keep the pilot alive so you can later jack a chopper and get back to canada... when you do get back to canada so tell everyone one and shit and the States gets warned and stuff and the CIA gets involved and its A cold war all over again.

Its decided that the USA, Canada, France, And Britain will all send a crap load of troops into the arctic and move fast and overwhelm the russians so that they will not fight back.

So about 300 choppers filled with troops all fly to the arctic but the russians have fortified in upper canada on the outer islands and they unload flak on the choppers and the choppers are forced to land on the islands and meet the russians on foot. and now its island to island fighting and gets very intense. Russia gets pissed and decides to nuke Britian to flex there muscles so the USA nukes one of russias cities and then Russia tests a nuke on Canadas yukon territory to show they arent scared to bring it to North America and then the nukes stop...

and thats just part of it... it gets way more complicated becasue it turns out the base was abondoned by the French and then the French are trying to get there first before the USA and canada.(Britain troops get pulled out because they plan on sending troops into the capitol of russia and need as many as possible.)

But it gets all crazy and stuff..

How it sound?

Bigger isn't always better... and this is one of those cases.



Look at Natural Selection... their whole list of guns is this:
- Welder (Is that considered a gun?)
- Pistol
- Light Machinegun
- Heavy Machinegun
- Shotgun
- Grenade Launcher

Does having only 5 or 6 weapons (other than the aliens' abilities) make it a bad mod?
No... on the contrary, it happens to be one of the most popular HL mods... because it has great, innovative gameplay.



In DoD you pick one of 8 different classes and each class gets to choose from a couple of weapons.

That's not many weapons... is DoD a bad mod?
Not unless "bad" means good.



I think that CS had as many weapons as it needed... any more would have made it unnecessarily complicated.

Even now, people always gravitate to 3 or 4 of all of the weapons if they have enough cash.

Now... think... compared to CS you have a huge list of weapons.

What makes you think that you will be able to balance that colossal list of weapons so that people don't only use a few of the "whoring" weapons while still keeping enough variety in the weapons to validate having that number of different weapons?



Great weapon selections are all about balance... and the bigger your list of weapons is, the harder you will have to work to balance them.



Follow the advice of of the game developing god, Shigeru Miyamoto.
Don't worry about the details like characters, weapons, story, setting, etc. when you first start on the game.
Your first priority should be creating gameplay that is fun, original, and keeps people coming back for more.
One you have a solid design for the gameplay... then, you begin fleshing out the details.
 
I think a lot of people like a lot of guns in a game. and also I wanted new guns in the game and not just the same old ak47.

Also people like to choose guns that fit there peronality and theres lots of personalities out there.

And all the guns will be as realistic as possible and there will be no gun balancing.
 
No gun balancing at all?

Even realistic games balance their weapon selections somewhat.

If you don't give people a reason to use a less powerful weapon they won't use it (unless they really like that weapon)... and the model/skin/sounds/animations will just be a waste of space (my guess is that at least 75% of your guns will probably turn out to fall in this category).

It's as simple as that.

I think OCybrManO and chu said some good thinks in this thread.

People will just use the best weapon around and dont care about the rest, just like cs (i hate that mod :)). Ive seen a lot of mods with WWII or modern anti-terrorist theme and i dont think its something special anymore. We need something new.

I would never join a team where leader can only contribute with ideas. Ive seen teams like that before and im sorry, but they didnt get very far.

Try to specialise yourself in one skill and if you want to be a leader of a mod, try to learn something about everything. I know you just want to be the "idea man" but people dont want to work on something like that.... i wouldnt work on a team like that :)

So get some skills in modding before you start a mod if you really want the mod to see the light of day.

Yet another boring mod doomed to failure. Im sorry I have to put it so harsly but there is no one person out there that will take orders from you and make a mod for you unless you wack out the wallot. Not only that, but your mod is unoriginal, plain and a rehash of every mod that has ever failed in the history of HL. I'll bet you my socks that you wont even get past this forum thread. If you are really serious about mod developping, learn how its done, get a better idea than "Lots o' guns" and make something, dont depend on others to do it. There are no management jobs in game development companies, everybody works for a common goal. Right now I think your going the wrong way entirely.
 
OK ... I actually read through the WHOLE thread and have come to this conclusion:

Futballer likes guns
Nobody likes mods that just feature about 25 guns of all the same type

Look futballer... when there is something I absolutely learned about makeing games/mods/projects... if you can't make them by YOURSELF, you can't make them... (I made some small games in my life, all on my own, any projects i started with a team, came down to me doing 75% of all the work and 30% of all the concept... so... well... not very motivating is it?)

Creating mods is hard work and just stuffing neat ideas into a forum won't get it done, even if those ideas might be extraordinary cool (to your opinion).

And ATM i am waiting for the HL2 SDK to be OFFICIALLY realeased to get a look into codeing... (or have i missed something?) and if I can handle it, i'll start on a mod i like, and look how far i can get... I'll never get into something like SCUT again (btw, hi there, MadMechwarrior)

Well, u know this idea is crazy,. As an OPTIMISTIC person I tell u there is nothin' impossible if u have the RESOURCE. U can waste memory (physically RAM or DataStorage) by building and making such a list of (wastefull) weapon that might some player never touch or even been BOTHERED with. If you so Idealist and no one can provide you any help. LEARN EVERYTHING YOURSELF! Why making others people feelings hurt, as a developers we have act like a Developer too!

I never make a MOD yet, but I make every piece of mod for counterstrike from modelling+skinning, sprite,mapping, scripting and now my project is analysing HLSDKv2.2 and I LOVE VALVE they include the *.dsw file beside the source (I love that they making it on VC++)!

Because I'am not yet graduate as an engineer on IT (from '98 hehe...) I remembered one of the most basic foundation when you a program/aplication :

" WHAT IS THE USER MINIMUM REQUIREMENT to PLAY your MOD?!" , that 's the reason why sometimes nice graphics games delayed... it didn't play well in MOST OF COM SPEC,because that is their market, they aim at the ancient purpose why a 'games' being developed "TO MAKE THEIR COSTUMER HAPPY", and your Idea not until 10 years later can assumed as a standard spec for a games, because :

1. DataStorage on HD--> More than 7 gigabyte's off! comparing to CS with a limited quality of frames,sprites,bmp texture color,model,qc,program function on HL1. Now you make on HL2!

2. The buffer of memory which can hold a data per time. I dont think they can't hold such a data with initialize in one exact time link to the RAM you have at least need 1.5Gb of RAM, considering the AI of classes that appear.

3. SO many more....AND THAT WILL NOT FULLFILL THE USER NEED's TO BE HAPPY SEING THEIR COMP LAG all time when there is other Mod or HL2 playing nicely on their spec!!!
 
LOL....this is another person wanting everyone to make the mod for him. Notice his comment about taking a modeling class. He, he.....

Well, I've got some news for you. Take some serious initiative and actually get the mod started before you ask for help, cuzz there's nothing new or special about this idea, and it would be a lot of boring work, and it would be like counterstrike, but not as good.
