Steady camera when walking

When watching the train station bink video, I noticed your head is completely steady when walking. Your view doesn't bob up and down at all or shift at all. To me, this kind of takes away from the immersion of the game. I feel less a part of the game when the camera is completely steady. It would be great if the camera were to move up and down just a little (like in Battlefield 1942, it was perfect in that game). Any thoughts?

Umm i never really considered it an issue so i guess i don't really care .

Bob or no bob, i'm fine with it.

Errr. I can't recall a game where the camera bobs. The weapon models bob... Is that what you're saying?

Try Thief III. It had camera bob. I thought it was pretty cool.

No, not the weapon models, the whole screen. Like I said, Battlefield 1942 did this and it was done really well. It moved just like your head does in real life. A lot of games do this. When it's done right, it adds a lot to the feel of the game. It may be subtle, but it helps.

Haha, I just remembered that it can be done really badly. In Jedi Outcast II I think the camera moved left and right and tilted left and right when you looked in first-person. It looked like you were waddling. I don't know how anyone could make a mistake like that . . . hahaha

Bob is teh cool. :)

And yknow what? - in Halflife 2 videos, whenever the player walks up stairs it looks so bad! Its soo...not smooth like he moves up a little bit on every step instead of actually smoothly stepping up them. make me mad! :hmph:

Theres probably a option to turn head bob on,i dont like it anyways casue i get motion sickness too easily. :(

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Not good . . . ;(

having the camera view bob makes everything harder to see and shoot while moving, l think the weapon bob is good though. There usually is an option to change bob on and off tho.

Either way it's not going to be changed. Gameplay mechanics such as this would have been decided more than a year ago.

They won't suddenly change it on the verge of going gold.

You're right. Doesn't mean I can't dream, though. :p

Raven shield had the best bobbing EVER, imo. Totally felt like real walking.

maybe there will be a console command , like in doom3 where you can turn off/on the bob etc..

yea i think newer unreal tournament games had head bobbing too that you can switch on and off

I thought bob was cool until in jedi knight I got motion sick and couldn't play the game.

You can adjust how much head you give bob in Painkiller... erm?

Just move your mouse up and down slightly or something :p
The steady cam is much better.

I think it would make the gameplay very difficult. Also the head would never move as in real life so it would be pointless.

You're not Hordon Freeman!

ARRGH! What is with the bobbing?!?! It's really no big deal ifthe screen bobs or not! That is not why we play games!

I like Bob, but really, really , really hate Earl.

ARRGH!!! Shut up, if you have nothing to bring to the post than dont post at all.

Anyway, I think the reason that bobbing has not been included is due the fact that alot of people get sick when playing games with head bob.

Half-Life also had very minor bobbing, almost unnoticable, so it's not a problem for me in Half-Life 2. But I do like when the view bobs a little, it feels strange when the camera is completely steady (for example in Red Faction).

I'm sorry but I have to agree with Annihilator91, this isn't a walking simulation it's halflife2

Head bobbing gives me motion sickness, so I don't really care its not in. And if its in , then I hope there is an option to turn it off. Like in many games.

i hate it when the camera moves. reminds me of medal of honor and feels like im running with high heels on!

bob is very important..
without it, it feels like you slide along the ground..

Bobbing annoys me sometimes, I don't find it immersive at all. Weapon bobbing is enough I think, having the whole screen move about is frustrating.

nah the head bob thing sucks. Its harder to aim with ur crossahair moving up and down + makes me feel sick

When the Valve guys introduce any feature, they make sure it has a good impact on gameplay. I remember Rick answering some fan who liked a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. feature, and he said he didn't think it would have been useful for gameplay. Gabe said something similar about clothes and boobies when answering other questions.

Turning on and off this bobbing option could be interesting, but I don't see it as easy as it seems. I think they would have to remove the "elevator" effect on ladders as well, and so on.

oh.. and bobing makes the game more realistic..
( offcourse if you have a natural bob value in the game )

Sliding along the ground isn't so realistic no?
WOLFENSTEIN 3D - style (DOS).. no thank you

The weapon bobbing in Half-Life wasn't too bad for the game. I think it was rather nice if I didn't think if it was good or not until now.

View bob can make me motion sick so I reduce it or disable it whenever possible, so the lack of view bob in Half-Life 2 doesn't much concern me.

I find headbobbing worthless because when you are further in the game i doubt you really care about it when running from a strider or what not you know?

who the crap bobs their head when their walking? apart from chickens and pigeons?

stand up, and walk in a straight line. tell me how much of your precious freakin head bobbing you see. none.

head bobbing ruins your view of the environment around you, forcing you to stop everytime you want to look at something properly. which is crap.

if you wanna feel realistic walking and bobbing go outside and walk to the food store.
I don't really care about bobbing i never really notice it.

Camera bobbing is shit.

Adds realism and immersion? Please... it takes away control... and that's the opposite effect.

Am I the only one that notices view bobing when walking in RealLife(tm)? It's not the head that bobs, it's the movement of the whole body that causes the effect.
I can understand no view bobing when the player is walking slowly, but when you run, the bobing should be noticable.
