I cant seem to kill any npcs when in stealth mode. Even if i get them while sleeping it never works :( What am i doing wrong? Arrows aimed at the head appear in their chests and only do a little damage.

Ive got quite a high marksman skill and i stand right next to the person when they're sleeping.

Do you have a decent level sneak?
It's simple, you crouch, aim, fire.

Oblivion dosn't use locational damage, hitting them in the foot or the head shouldn't make much difference.

You shouldn't get an auto-kill in sneak mode, you should get a damage multiplier(On my bows I see 3x, on my swords i've seen 6x).

Yep i have high level sneak. it just doesnt work for me :( How high do my skills need to be?

I get single hit kills for the majority of NPCs when in sneak mode and my character is only level 4. My Sneak and Marksman skills are really really really high though.

My sneak is 46 and my marksman is 48 and im level 7

The multipliers should work at level 25+. It's merely a damage multiplier.

3x for bows
6x for 1-handed swords.

Bows are initially very weak - you'll rarely get 1-shot kills. 1-shot kills are mostly based on whether your damage on the first strike exceeds the NPC's health. wouldn't it be too easy if you could kill every NPC with a sneak-bow-shot from 80 ft away?

I'm curious, what about spells. If you sneak and then hit somebody with a fireball in the back, do you get extra damage?

I believe that "spell damage" (including destruction ehcantments on weapons) does not get multiplied.

I'm pretty sure that if Oblivion were real life, a spell would only be as powerful as it ever is whether you sneak up on someone or not.

Why bows and knives are stronger, I will never know. :|

I can understand that a preemptive strike with a dagger could do more damage by catching them by surprise it is assumed that they leave themselves wide open to a vital organ attack.. something like that.

I guess same goes for bows, although a perfect shot in a critical area is a perfect shot - whether they saw it coming or not, but it's just a game don't forget :)

I recommend getting a fire bow, they're as common as dirt among bandits and are worth only about 100-200. The extra fire damage does the job nicely.

If you aren't prepared for an attack it always hurts more, think about it. If you accidently knock your head on a cupboard door it hurts atleast slightly more then when you bang it on yourself on purpose... lol might be a bad example actually...

hmm, ah yes being punched in the stomach! If you dont expect it you cant prepare and your winded and down in a single hit. There we go.
