Steam and fps?

I am not sure which forum this belongs but anyways, I have a serious problem in playing any halflife mod ever since i installed steam. At first I was hesitant to installing it because of all the bad stories i have been hearing about it. However, I had to install it, I was not able to play any games online anymore except through direct ip. I have a pretty good rig, a pentium 4 2000 512 ddram 9800 pro. I use to get 100+ frames but when i installed steam I now get 7-19 fps! Its barely unplayable, I dont get how installing steam messed up my frame rate. Anyways, is there anyway to fix this or am I basically screwed?

there are some commands u have to put in cuz u have an ati card... i forgot wat they were tho

Well if it's barely unplayable, you shouldn't be having too much of a problem.

Have you tested to see other games have this problem? Did you acquire the latest ATI drivers from http://www.ati.com for your Radeon card? Do you have Catalyst 3.8?

For your information, I have an ATI card too. And a Radeon 9700 Pro at that, which is not as powerful as his Radeon 9800 Pro. How come I'm not having that problem then?

Heh ment to say unbareable, I cant really play in 10-20fps

Hmm I never heard of entering commands for a ati card, any clue on what they are?

i remember quite clearly the existance of certain "ati_" commands in the console that helped out some ati users

ati owner 9700nonpro, no problems here mate, try the steam forums.
