Check pc for spyware, adware, viruses, and trojans. My cousin's pc did that when it was full of spyware+viruses+trojans.

My comp was full of spyware/trojans but i have removed them with(regedit).
But why is spyware crashing steam?
What specific spyware was it, i had several on my system?

Was it "SMAGENT"?

I dunno, all I know is that he had over 100 viruses and about 50 trojans ontop of loads of spyware...lol

That my friend, is an pwnd computer.

I'm not good at trouble shooting XP problems, but I see without appropriate rights. Could that have to do with the administrator rights and such? Maybe some spyware/viri did that so they couldn't run scans? O_O

Do you have windows xp/2000? I've seen this problem before... I think its a bug that occurs if the user has a limitied (not admin) account. Assuming you have windows XP, are you logged in as admin or limited?

This is XP Home and i only have the one user and it is not the admin account. I believe that specific spyware try's to use the same memory addresses as steam causing it to crash.

I thought it was a steam worm for a sec, i think i got it through a IE script exploit. I still would like to confirm what it is as it is still happening, i'm going to guess "SMAGENT"

Run Adaware on your computer and see if it can pick up any last remnents of spyware.

100 viruses! I say format and reinstall. That is the only way i can think of. When a computer is ownd that bad you need to do that. One thing i do, is use Linux for most of my stuff and then use windows for my Games. This might be good because most virus coders are linux lovers or does not want to waste their time with a virus that can only spread in a small minority of people. Other than that i would say Adaware and SpywareBlaster makes a good combo. Hope this helps

You can use regedit to find and remove trojans if you know where to look and what should be there.

I should have made a list of everything i deleteted in sys32 and reg.

But anyone know anything more about this specific problem! - i know it's easy to fix.

Here is what I recommend. Use a different Internet browser, for example, Mozilla Firefox.
Most of that junk that comes to your computer exploits IE's flaws. The worst thing about IE is that it is intergrated with Windows, meaning what affects IE will also directly affect Windows as well.

The correct process name for SMAGENT should be: SMAgent.exe. If it appears as SMAGENT it's likely that some spyware has hacked SMAgent and is using it for nefarious means.

SMAgent.exe is part of the SoundMax service agent. Soundmax is often used by onboard sound-cards on motherboards.

yeah it was not SMAgent.exe still dont know what one.

going through regedit is great if you know wat to look for but you might have missed some spyware or even deleted some non spyware, in the future i recomend just dling a free copy of adaware or the ilk and running that

I have:

Ad-Aware (Finds and gets rid of Adware)
Spybot (Finds and gets rid of Spyware)
AVG Free Anti-Virus (It's probably the best FREE anti-virus around)
Mozilla Firefox (With its pop-up blocker and other nifty stuff, it's hard to get for malicious stuff to get on your computer. It's a web browser)

All these things working together have kept my computer clean. I used to have to re-format my computer once a year because of stupid stuff. Now since I've been using that combo up there, I've not had 1 piece of adware or spyware on my computer in MONTHS.
