steam feature to back up cache files

Thats sweet info. For the people scared of links.

"In the near future you will be able to make a CD Backup of your games.

KeyGens as a rule don't work and we have never had an instance of a KeyGen'd CD-Key getting registered on a Steam account.

Most often people lose accounts because they don't use strong passwords. Having your Account name and password the same is one of the most common ways to get your account stolen by another user...so don't do it.

Also keep in mind that you shouldn't share your login information / e-mail account password / or *ANY* other account information with anyone...including (especially) your brother / sister / kids / mates / buddies / pals / pets / etc. If you use Steam at a cafe or friends' house make sure you log out completely."

also from page 2...

Also, yep there will be a DVD-sized option for the Backup feature too. It's not going to actually burn the discs, but it will create a self-extracting archive that is broken up into the appropriate-size files.

Well, at least they care about people without dvd drives.

But what about people without internet connections? ;(

And what about the people with 486's and ATi Mach64 Vid cards?

This sounds great. I especially like the "self-installing archive" part.

Seriously. People without inet shouldnt be complaing. Its the year 2004. inet is super cheap. + if they watched out for people with bad comps no inet etc etc. There will be no steam (steam is great) No good gfx till the year 2100 (sry but i would like to see real time life gfx in my lifetime)

So what they're saying is that in order to play online when HL2 is out, and to actually register HL2, you will need to have a legit CD key, basically meaning that pirating will be 100% impossible?

Not 100%... just dificult for the average joe...

They'll (pirates) probably have cracked/hacked up authentication servers (or a service on your machine that acts as a Valve authentication server (along with hacked HL2 code to see it as a real server).

Nothing is 100% un-hackable... not until we get into hardware encryption/authentication (MS Paladium and such)... and even then, I'm still skeptical.

It won't stop the pirating, but it will make it tricky for a while.
It won't be as easy as just cracking, like it usually is :p

Ah, maybe now i wont have to buy the game retail to have a hard copy of it... il use this nifty device and make my own dvd case cover. yay :D

This was pretty much my last qualm concerning Steam, great to see Valve are on top of issues like this.

NICE!! I can't wait for this feature. :D Now my steam copy is going to be just like the retail...except with the box. :| But still...i'll make some cool labels and stuff and it'll be close to it :E PLUS, i'll have DOD:S. Go Steam!
