Steam forums cracking down on garry's mod

That's really all I wanted to know. I have never released any porn pictures nor do I plan on doing so (I think i made that quite clear). I was just interested to see if you guys really believed in that or just did it because that's what you (or steampowered, for that matter) think the public will object to.

Which is completely a valid, of course. As a moderator I would probably do the same (at least if my site depends on sponsorship and ads). You could have just said so, instead you tried to justify it, which obvioulsy didn't work.

That's not the issue here. People are just pissed off with the incessant pics. They're not meant to be used in the same way as porn, they're meant as a joke, and the joke got old. So we've had enough.

The rules of this forum (and a lot of other gaming forums thank you very much) can be upheld however they like, and they don't want a lot of the unoriginal drivel produced with Garry's Mod to be posted everywhere.

They're not challenging your deeply held beliefs regarding innuendo and sexual security or whatever, they're challenging the hordes of idiots who persist in posting content that the vast majority of the community doesn't want to see or discuss.

Well, it won't change within the lifetime of the relevant authorities. Or, more to the point, it won't change within the lifetime of the brain-eating aliens who are clearly infesting some forumites.

No one is going to change their stance. The moderators are not mindless robots (well, one or two of them) and they're not going to suddenly switch stances- this is dependant on opinion rather than ethical values. They could well have banned repetetive flash games or IP-harvesting scams (heh), it just so happens that this is somehow relevant to nudity/sex and therefore plenty of people seem to get riled up over the issue.

This is all on privately owned servers etc. "freedom of speech" is non-existant here. "Censorship" definitely occurs, with any material deemed unsuitable for this site, or for the steampowered forums.

So, there has to be some other justification for it, which can only be that those pictures are offensive. Now, please explain to me why a picture of NON NUDE computer models (ppl seem to forget that) in a sexual pose are offensive, while a picture of alyxs hanging upside down from a meat hook isn't? I don't get it.

this site isn't for that content, its immature, its stupid, its becoming spam, and we dont want an atmosphere here where there are pictures of alyx having sex with dr kleiner everywhere; it makes the place look tacky and sleezy.

no, you misunderstood me there, my fault i think, you see, what the original poster was saying was that it was nearly at the level of animal sex in its... substance, and then I made the point that it was barely at the level of real pornography.
The issue here is not that its porn, but that its stupid spam, and while certain other forums may have it plastered everywhere, I'd like to think hl2.net is able to be a little above that.

If the forums operate in an environment that supports material such as that, it can only have a negative impact; its not so much what people do with the 'garryporn' but its what effect the 'garryporn' has on the people.

Imagine going to Forum A and seeing threads about "Dr Kleiner" and then going to Forum B and seeing a thread about "Dr Kleiner being sucked off by alyx!!111one" -which forum do you think you'd like to be a part of?

I think it really all depends on the person who views the images. If you post something with pronographic material in it, Just say so in the title. If the "kids" see that and still look at the image, then their parents should just deal with it.

It's just like movies. Some are rated R for a reason. But if it said nothing and you went and watched it, you'd complain. And like posted earlier, There is violence in HL:2 that kids shouldn't even view. The game is intended for mature people. I don't really see what the problem is if "adults" view "animated" pron from a game. It's sorta like stick figure death animation. People whine about it, but they don't have to keep going back to find something else about it to whine about.


P.S. Is child pron illegal in Britain? 'Cause I swear I seen 3 naked girls in a bathtub in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.

Yeah, I'm well aware that freedom of speech applies only to state/people relationship, I was just trying to show the difference between being annoyed by something and banning it, because a lot of people reasoned that accounts should be banned simply because they are annoyed by something.


I'm not going to quote the rest of your post, but i still agree . The only reason i started posting was because i wanted to see if maybe someone could convincingly explain why sexual poses are deeply offensive (to an extent to warrent an immediate ban, at least on steampowered) and other offensive material isn't.

Just keeping the community nice and decent is a completely different and valid issue, and as I said, I agree with you on that part. I was just trying to stir some reaction so see if ppl actually believe garry's porn (I'm sure he would love for it to be called that way ) is in some way more offensive than anything else.

You know the older I get the LESS responsibility I feel towards toning down computer and video game related stuff to make it "ok for kids." This is strange, since I figured I would feel a higher level of responsibility for this.

I used to think cursing in Battlefield and Desert Combat was immature. After all, there might be kids playing. But the more I played it the more I realized, "Hey, this game is not for kids."

If these Garry's Mod pictures were showing nudity and things of that nature, maybe I would understand. But quite frankly I think if it is ok for a kid to slice zombies in half with a circular saw or drop cars onto them or watch massive amounts of blood spraying onto a wall after shooting someone with a shotgun then showing computer characters in sexual positions is nothing to get excited about. This, of course, is American society in a bubble. Chopping someone in half is fine, but God forbid you should ever show them in sexual positions with their clothes on!!!

In fact, F@&* kids. As a rule nobody under 14 should be able to play any computer game that isn't specifically designated for kids. You hear that 13 year olds? F@*# you!
