as I said I need a new PC, one problem however: I'm not sure about how steam works in this situation? if I uninstall steam on this one and then when I get the new one download steam then log into my current account will it have all my steam games on the new PC or do I have to reinstall or re-buy everything, or do I have to download them from the account onto the new one or something?

On your new computer, install Steam and log into your account. Under "My Games" there will be a list of uninstalled games that are tied to your account (ones you already own under Steam). You will have to re-download them on your new computer, but not re-purchase.

As long as you have your Steam account, you will retain your games.

K, cheers, but it wont have saved games and achivements and progress and stuff will it?

You'll have achievements saved, but I don't know about saved games. You can easily copy and paste saved games to your new computer since they are relatively small files.

IIRC you will have all the achievements that you have already gotten, but you will lose progress on the cumulative achievements.

Valve hasn't introduced Steam Cloud for Source games other than for L4D, so no saved games or keyboard configs yet.

although it's been a short while scince anyone posted here, this probably wont' be considered revving an old thread (if it is, I'm sorry, please don't give me an infraction) but when I get my new PC will I need to uninstall steam on this machine first or will it not make a difference?

You can have steam installed on any number of computers and install all your games, but you won't be able to play on more than one at the same time.
