Steam purchase question.

I've got a question.

How is Valve going to sell HL2 on steam and then push it out to people a week before it comes out? This doesn't make sense to me. You can purchase it on the 30th, but if it is released on the 30th, then how can you buy it a week before it comes out?

I guess a question more important than when will HL2 be released, would be when will it be available for purchase on Steam? I know it's a rhetorical question, but it makes me wonder...

Let me know if this doesn't make sense.

you pay your money and download hl2, but it is encrypted and on the 30th or whenever it comes out, it unencrypts so you can play. that way there is less strain on the servers.

Hmmm...

I have played a solid number of MMORGPs in my time and I have dealt with the "Buy it online" ordeal.

Let me tell you something, they better shoot 3x higher than what they expect, because when those servers get overloaded and people start pumpin in CC #s in return for CD keys there are going to be a whole lot of problems.

I think what he means is the "pre-loading" version is going to take up quite abit of room on your HD I'd imagine.. And if I plan on buying it in the store, why would I want all that space wasted if I'm not going to download it?

Ooor... Perhaps It's a pre-load for universal compatibility. e.g. It pre-downloads a portion of the game, and then on the 30th (or whenever) you have the option to download the rest (with purchase via Steam), or simply go to the store, but it, and install over the pre-loaded files, hence no wasted space.

G-Man has got my point. All i meant was, if that is how they are pushing it out - a week in advance - then it'd be available on Steam to buy a week before it's released.
