I don't care much for CSS or HLDM so why should I need to login online to play an offline game? If I want multiplayer I play Socom 2 on my PS2 (which blows CSS away in gameplay not graphics).

Think about it. If Steam is down like it has been recently, legit buyers like myself cannot play single player. Meanwhile our illegal warez buddies are happily blasting Combines apart. This is driving me crazy thinking about it...

Well, theoretically we do have the offline mode...

And here.

EDIT: Waitasec - when exactly was steam down recently??

It was down till a couple of hours here. Now's back! :)

Yes, that's an inconvenience, but it's very very rare to steam servers be down!

And pirates don't have updates, and a lot of other advantages of Steam. ;)

The steam log in server was down last night. If you was already logged in you could play games like normal, but those who werent logged in couldnt play for an hour or so. Its only a small hitch, it rarely happens. I dont understand why when this happens once in a blue moon for a short period people get so frantic and angry. Just relax, it doesnt happen everyday. I believe the log in server to be back online now, as most people including myself have no problems getting onto steam.

Ah, thanks! Didn't know about that outage - just found the other threads as well.
First time I've noticed that Steam's been down for ages, and even this was quite minor. :)

Errr, Steam works offline for me too. And the Socom franchise, is just terrible. Online games aren't meant for consoles!

Valve you sir are the devil and i hate you and will never buy another 1 of your products because steam goes down all the time! Infact the last time it went down was about a year ago for about 2 hours AND THAT IN UNACEPTABLE!!!!!

Well there's Steam offline mode (which seems to pick and choose when to work). Which is totally unacceptable, Valve needs to fix that asap. You shouldn't have to wonder whether you'll be able to play your games offline or not, it should always work.

Does for me too, i had one brief period of 2-3 days when HL2 didnt work offline, but thats was a long time ago and its been fine ever since.

I hate to pull this out.

But about %95 of the problems i've seen solved OR i've solved myself is usually down to something on the users end.

Tis the same with all programs.

I hate to pull this out, But your an arsehole. Steam is shit. It could be fixed but at the moment I think it's shit.

Personal insults really makes you sound like you have a point.

I wouldn't doubt that statistic, but I know the problems I've had with Steam are not because of anything I've done.

Steam went down for quite a while for people who dont keep steam running. If you had your steam on when it went down, you wouldnt have had problems because you were already logged in, which is where the problems occured

They even took down the www.steampowered.net forums because so many people were complaining.

Valve isn't rewarding pirates, and if you think that way then you are completely 100% wrong. Valve has absolutely nothing to do with steam's operation, which is it's own company. Get your facts straight please. And without steam you wouldnt be playing these games at all.

Offline play works fine for me. I haven't been online on one computer since I bought the game.

Uh.. I'm pretty sure Steam is owned/operated by Valve.

hahaha flawless....your name is a contradiction! Valve owns steam...who else would? It plays only their games on it

Steam is much better than it originally was. Even its release i had no problems. Most issues are user sided. Insulting Ben like Jandor that for no reason is plain pathetic. Just cos 'you're' (which is how you are meant to spell it) forced to use it, you get sore. Well accept it or don't play any valve games. We dont care. This is the first login problem for 2 years...jesus christ sort your priorities out, if it doesn't work play something else or go out. Dont be so pissed off about it.

It's human nature to be pissed off when something doesn't work the way it should. :) Understandably, nothing is perfect, including Steam (yes, Steam is not perfect, for all you Steam apologists), so I suppose we should give Valve some time to work the bugs out (like the recurring "offline mode not ready" issue). And eventually I may forgive Valve/Steam for forcing me to wait 3 hours to play HL2 on release day. :p

Never had a big problem with Steam. The only times I've had any kind of trouble was when something big has been released like HL2 or CS:S and the fact that it takes a while to download if the servers are busy. Other than that, its been cool.

Down? Hasn't been down for me. Just incase you don't know, save your paswword info and you play in offline mode.

Bully for you.

Plenty of people do, however... I just don't see why so many people react so extremely. It hardly strengthens your cause to hurl insults around or become incoherent with rage, no matter how tempting it might be to do so.

i dont like the fact that offline games depend on steam at all.

Steam is fine for me. There was this problem ages ago after an update where none of the games would load, but that got fixed pretty quickly. I don't like the fact that whether I play my games or not is all in Valves control.
