Thousands of anti-war protesters have gathered in Manchester for what organisers said was "one of the biggest mobilisations outside London". Demonstrators were protesting against Government policies in the Middle East and nuclear weapons, on the eve of the Labour Party conference in the city.
The theme was "Time To Go" - a call to get troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Police estimated 20,000 people took part. Stop The War Coalition had said it had expected about 100,000.
One of the organisers, Yasmin Ataullah of the British Muslim Initiative, told the BBC they put the figures of demonstrators at 40,000 or higher.
Was a fantastic march. I was there, the speeches were excellant and the march was massive. Heres some photos I took:

Whats your opinion on the issues with which the march was focused?

Wow! Very impressive! 20,000-40,000 is a terrific size for a rally. Our rally today in Vancouver demanding "Free the Cuban 5" only numbered around 500.

My opinion on the theme of the march - "Time To Go", getting troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan - is hell yes.

Troops out now.

yeah, pulling out troops would just make things all peaceful in Iraq, it's not like they are on the brink of civil war.....

Our troops do nothing except cause people to hate us more.

We're getting the sames ones, too. Bastarsds

But the situation for Iraqis would be made worse if the foreign troops were pulled out, no?
No. Our troops are oppressing the Iraqi people, we are only protecting the big buissness's who are stationed in Iraq, **** all is being done for the average Iraqi.

I hadn't thought about it like that. You really don't think the presence of the foreign forces makes any difference to the internecine conflicts, that it wouldn't get a lot worse without them?

Well our troops arn't doing anything to stop the factions fighting anyway and without the coallition being pressent perphaps the Iraqi state might seem a bit more legitimate to the Iraqi people.

Oppressing the Iraqi people.

That's a good one!

Perhaps?
As I understand it, the insurgents want to entirely replace the government, undemocratically and non-respresentively. The coalition created the situation in Iraq and are responsible staying there until it's sorted out. If they leave, the Iraqi government, which elements of the insurgency do not regard as legitimate, will fail.

Why the protest against the nuclear weapons? Seems a bit random to me.

"So, we're gonna march against the evil oppression in Iraq. Anything else we can protest against? Two birds with one stone is always good!

- Nuclear weapons?

Good one!"

Nah, the UK government are wanting to replace our currents Trident warheads with some new stuff. Replacing them will cost 25billion pounds, whilst schools and the NHS have massive deficits.

sounds like fun.....never been in a protest like that before...
Aye, was brilliant fun. One of the speakers was some Northean Irish Guy called Eamon something or other, he was part of an anti-war group who had blocked some Isreali arms manufacturing plant in Derry. There was also some anarchists demanding class war who were amusing.

Did it accomplish anything or did it just make everyone feel better about themselves?

Sorry, I just watched Hotel Rwanda, and it makes me angry.

Showed thoose labour people they won't get away if invading Iran, we need to keep the pressure on the government through similar demonstrations and acts of civil disobediance to get the attention of others to our cause.

Perhaps you need to go to Iraq to see exactly what is going on rather than just making up your mind from filtered new reports?

If you want to see what is really going on in Iraq, you talk to the soldiers coming back and you look at the pictures they've taken, both the good and the bad pictures and take both the good and bad stories...not get all your opinions from a tabloid newspaper that sensationalises stories to sell papers.

You shouldn't blame the troops man, some if not most of them don't want to be there. It;s the goverments fault for taking them into this situation.

I don't understand why people blame the soldiers. At the end of the day they dint say lets goto war, the Blair admin said so, so blame Tony Blair.

You wouldn't like it if u was blamed for something u did not agree to nor had any control over, so dont blame our troops.

BTW why is it i only see Brittish ppl in these protests, if Muslims were so against the Iraq invasion why do they not come too and protest, or is it because they get out of control & start threatning people with death...shame on them.

I would presume Muslims were there, but they hold as much wait as any other member of British society.

Er, because Manchester is in Britain? Oh, sorry, I see, by 'British' you mean white people? Anyone born in Britain is British, irrespective of race or religion. You racist twat.

While you were protesting the war, I was at home masturbating to lesbian porn!

Who's the real winner here?

About a third of the people there were Muslims.

I don't care about world peace. I care about stability. Prosperity. Freedom.

I've always wondered, what's the point of marches, demonstrations and protests? If the 100,000 people just contributed $20 each to hire a few lobbyists or buy over a couple of politicians they would accomplish so much more and it would save everyone the trouble.

Now that's called thinking with your head, lol
