I just looked at some pictures of striders and compared them to pictures of antlions and saw that striders might be a beanpolified version of antlions.. Just looked that way.. prove me wrong in anyway possible.. :rolling:

Don't really think anyone but Valve could do that, not without using info from the stolen files and that would be bad

Personally though I think their all just biomechanical type things, atleast the Combine stuff, the antlions simply look like some sort of misc creature, doesn't appear to look like the other stuff Valve call Combine.

I don't really think they're big antlions but I see what you mean.

I imagine the name could give something away as to what they are, Ant Lions.. Same with combine, and the look of some of their gear it looks combined organic/machine. So maybe the antlions are like lions and behave like ants.. or something.. hmm Where's Gabe with some insider info when ya need him :)

Well maybe they act like ants to the bugbait, or to the striders? :dork: ?

Yeah. I see it now:
Ant Lions: Worker Bugs
Ant Lion Guards: Royal Body Guards
Striders: Royal Bugs

They don't look like in any way to me. At all.

Even when I'm drunk.

Same thing with Striders and Headcrabs really.

don't think so, but it's a good idea, it's true they all look alike

In what way do Striders look like Ant Lions? I can't see it at all.

Anyway, Striders are part of the Combine, Ant Lions aren't.

Well, the Ant Lions attack the Combine Soldiers in Bugbait, so that means they aren't part of the Combine.

Gabe Newell: They are part of the Combine.

Antlions are native creatures on earth that have been on our world since the Mesa accident.

Striders are combine heavy assault biomechs.

Native to Earth and only arrived here after the Black Mesa Incident? Quite a trick.

</nitpick>

Hey, that made me think of something: Are Striders autonomous, or do they have a pilot?

I can do it without stolen info! Look at the strider's back, there is a combine symbol on it.

Yay!

Didn't valve say that Striders are not Combine but affiliated with them? I think that Striders are the same race/army thing as Antlions, like the next step up from the big Antlions. Not Combine, but allied with them.

It looks like they're autonomous, they seem like an organic/mechanical compound (or are they just holding the gun?) but maybe theyre remote controlled or something...

Oooh dear. Kill me now. I skipped over that part -_-;;;

What? the striders look nothing like the antlions... When I first saw this thread I thought it just said Strider = Really big which sounded kind of funky.

Well, I doubt it, seeing as the Striders are part of the Combine forces, and the Ant Lions are part of the Xen invasion. It's a three-way battle in City17, remember?

Heh, I asked that Strider question. You may thank me now :p

Aanyway, I can see where you made the connection - same kind of colours and organic look, but as many people have mentioned before, they're on opposing sides. Who knows, perhaps the Striders were from the Xen forces, but the Combine tamed them for use or something.

I think the Striders and Gunship (which are possibly related; they seem to have the same "head") are biomechanoids developed from a mix of Terran and Xenian Science and genetics...

No, in the "bugbait" video you can see one of the larger antlions and if that is any indication of how they grow, i doubt very much they could turn into a strider.

Maybe striders are xen creatures infused with biomechanical technology and thats why the combine is called the combine, cause they combine stuff.

meh, I'm keeping that theroy 'till the end.

I thought the reason the ant lions were attacking is because they are blind, and the combine are either:

a: Attacking them

or

b: Being coated in pheromones

???

Also, in the Valve Speaks article on the main page, Gabe states that Striders are combine..

Ahh, but the Ant Lion Guard isn't affected by the Pheromones, because he attacks Gordon. And it still attacked the Combine soldiers.

i wonder who in hl2 are the baddies from xen... the striders remind me of a mechanical(and three legged) version of... what's its name?... monarth? that spider thing in the xen levels... that's got a huge nut-sack that you shoot at, and then he spews out white crap at you ... eww... striders remind me of that, but COMBINEd with mechanical parts hehehe

edit: gonarth? gonarch? gonad? gonarch i'm guessing now... maybe gonads? ... and strife??? WEEEEEEEEE

Gonarch. And apparently, it was a she (the name VALVe jokingly gave her was the "Big Momma").

Some of us think it was the fully grown form of a headcrab, others don't.

Im am 100% sure that striders and gunships are combine, you can in fact see when Gordon is driving in the E3 Video that the gunship olnly attacks Gordon, but not all those combine soldiers in those hangars by the beach. Also those striders seems to be the same form as the gunships. :borg:

Of course the gunships are combine they come to some combine grunts rescue in one of the videos after he sends up a flare. the striders are definately combine because they have combine logo's on there back. The antlions are definately not because a antloin gaurd attacks some combine in one of the videos, even though they can't be controled with bugbait(so freeman didn't make it do it). The headcrabs are just native xen creatures like the antlions and so are the snarks and sound dog things... the scientists are working for the G-man and so is Freeman who is allied with the freedom fighters.

And if you look at the striders and gunships, they seem to have the same shaped head.

I think I may have already said this.

The Striders also attack Kleiner's Lab when Scanners spot it and Scanners are sure to be Combine...

However I am nearly sure THe Combine have that name because they are Xen and humans combined. I mean can't you get the gas masks on Combine soldiers? They're zombies so they use them so that the general population isn't scared when they see them. And they're smart zombies since they have developed technology.

Meh, could mean multiple things. A combine is also some kind of harvester for crops, or in the Combine's case, earths resources.
I don't really think it's a combination of Xen/Humans.

If they are hybrids, their gasmasks must be full of horrid alien breath, the poor things.

You just all remember that both Striders and Antlions are not friendlies! Only with the feromone balls you can steer the ant lions. But I don't think lowering your pants will subdue a strider! My advice: run like hell
