stupid AI

Hey

i was just reading through the Valve info only thread and i was thinking back on some of the Half Life events i was just playing today. I thought of something that is sort of AI related. It is that if you have two combine or even alien enemies standing pretty close to each other and you shoot one with a fairly quiet gun, will the other turn and shoot you. I am asking because i was just playing and these two grunts were just standing right next to each other with their backs to me and i shot one with the crossbow. the other just stood there and sort of raised his gun looking in front of him. Will this happen in HL2 or is the AI too good?

They'll notice their ally down. They'll look around at least.

Don't ask us, ask Gabe, because most of us know nothing about it.

I'll speculate on it anyway. I'd say the AI would react to sounds. But if it isn't in HL2, someone could just mod it. It's a Design decision not a Technical Limitation... Eh, I love saying that.

Nah, that's already been answered by Valve. You don't need to send Gabe another e-mail.

Yeah, but that could be said for any game, so it's kinda like a no-brainer. I swear some of you think Source is the only moddable engine.

no if their ally dies they will begin to cry hysterically, and turn the gun on themselves to commit the ultimate sin

If they react to sounds that would own, say you added something like a "pick up object" kinda command and thru a rock past the combine and he went to look for it and you ran in a building or something he was guarding :D

I'm pretty sure if something like that was possible in an old game like MGS than it is in source
but it all depends on if they wanted to add that to the style of play which half life is
not exactly a tactical espionage shooter

If the AI can react to notice objects around them they can ATLEAST notice their friend dieing, unless there is a good reason for them not to.

It's not even a question. It's a fact that they will notice their ally is down and they will look around.

I want to know if they'll actually take cover though, instead of being idiots and just walk around looking...

Yeah that's similar to "It's a feature not a a bug." heh

There is no need to discuss this unless we have proof one way or another.

Well, then what exactly will we discuss? AMD vs Intel toaster benchmarks? Sounds like fun!

If one needed proof "one way or another" prior to having a discussion, it is unlikely one would HAVE a discussion in the first place as it is pretty much... proven.

As to whether an enemy will notice if their ally was shot with a quiet weapon: it really depends on the circumstances. If they are not facing in the general direction of the victim, and the victim falls to the ground with little sound, or ambient sound blocks it out, then no, they should NOT start shooting at you. If they hear the shot, the hit, or the fall, then I would hope they would respond realistically (which does not imply or assume an intelligent response).

I honestly would love to see a combine soldier panic as his buddies start dropping for no apparent reason.

Panic and get the rest of his comrades after ya ;) then you gotta run :(

Well if you had killed the grunt with another weapon instead of the crossbow the other grunt would have reacted, its just that the crossbow is silent, except for the thud! thump sounds. I think it was a flaw in the coding.

I think the soldiers are going to react to sound... Its the most logical system. If you throw something via the manipulator, its bound to make sound. Soldiers not responding to check it out... It would be incredibly stupid, and I seriously doubt Valve designers have overlooked it.

It masturbates right there, with a gun? wow

hehhehehe

I think the AI is going to be extremely advanced. I'll be scared to break wind infront of the computer, in case the combine soldiers hear me.

When I poked around in the HL1 source code, IIRC it seemed like they implemented some kind of smell system. I think it shows in the game for example when Barney says "Whew, something died down here!" But anyway, I think we should be pretty certain that HL2 will have a much better AI than its predecessor - I mean, it's been five years!

Check the Valve Only Info thread, this has already been answered:

Q: Will the enemy hear sounds and then go to investigate them in single-player?

A: Yes. However it isn't a stealth game a la Thief.

Q: Say you put a table or something in front of a door or you climb over a wall of some sort, will a pursuing enemy follow you in the single-player game?

A: Yes.

Q: Will the enemy ever go on the offensive in a group and use flanking tactics and such in single-player?

A: Yes.

Q: If you use the manipulator to throw something. Will the enemy investigate the noise if they hear it and if they see it will they try to find the origin of where the object was thrown in single-player?

A: Yes.
