Super Mario Galaxy reviewed... :(

IGN's scoring system has always been pretty ****ing wacky, anyway. Why some sites/magazines feel the need to score out of 100 (decimal points notwithstanding) is beyond me. The most it needs is out of 20 (ie - a max of 10 including .5's between), and then just let the review speak for itself. It always just ends up with people saying "oh, it so deserved another .1" this way.

Gamespot actually gave this a 9.5. I expected a lower score from them given their silly rating system.

1 of their cons made me worry:

* A couple of Mario's special suits can be frustrating to use
* Minimal amount of story doesn't tie everything together especially well.

Well shit. It looks like I won't be buying SMG because everybody knows Mario games are all about amazing narratives with twists and turns that rival the best novels and movies out there (Bowser is your father! And the final question mark block contains Peach's head! :o).

They just use those critiques to mask the patented Gamespot "not on Xbox 360" point modifier.

Pretty much :P

It sounds like the spring suit is a little tough to control. I had no idea there's a variation of the winged cap in SMG. That is f*cking awesome.

The problem is that people don't read reviews, and game scores serve a precise rank ordering function that text can't provide.
I always skip to the end and just read the conclusion and scores anyway. IGN reviews are pretty flabby, sometimes reaching 5 or 6 pages for what could have been said in 2...

Can't wait for this game... I went to play Super Mario World 2 yesterday in anticipation but that just led to me finding out my Super Nintendo isn't working anymore... 16 YEARS AND IT LEFT ME WITHOUT EVEN SAYING GOODBYE!

I'm kind of the opposite. I don't really care too much about the score as opposed to what they say about the game.

Yeah, I meant about IGN in particular, unless maybe it's just a couple of pages. Somewhere like Eurogamer I'll usually read in full.

Super Mario Galaxy!

It'll take more than that to phase me.

More like... Super gay galaxy of gays where everyone is gay.

Yeap, should be getting that call from Nintendo marketing any minute now. With a potty mouth like that I might even get to name their next console.

What's the availability of Wiis like these days? My old roomate had one so I never attempted to buy one. Now that this game is on the horizon I'm feeling desperate about getting one of my own. Just wondering if people ever see these conosles in stores or if I'm S.O.L.

I feel like I have not seen any in stores in a while. Over the Summer I think I saw actual Wiis in boxes maybe 3 times on various occasions. Makes sense since there just were not that many games out that people really wanted, so maybe they hung around longer than 20 minutes without being snatched up. Now, esp. with Galaxy dropping as we speak and officially next week they will likely be harder to find. Good luck though! You owe it to yourself as a gamer to get one and enjoy the crap out of it!

Although this game is getting ridiculously high scores and is said to be different, I'm going to wait and see what yahtzee says about this first cos I'm still not 100% sold on this.

I think he'd be the first person to insist to not taking his reviews too seriously.

That's true but I do like that he isn't biased towards the fact that "OMG it's zelda or Halo let's give a good score" idea that was evident in his halo 3 and zelda PH reviews and so I'm sure he'll give an accurate review for the game, cos so far I believe he has been spot on with his reviews.

Fair enough about Halo 3, I can appreciate that's not to everyone's taste, but do you realy find PH to be as poor as his review suggested? It's one of the best DS games i've played, despite a few flaws, and is wonderful in many ways. He basically took the lazy way out and slagged it off due to being part of a franchise. I'm still amazed we can play games like this on handhelds.

No I have to admit I am not a big Zelda fan at all, so I agree with him personally.

And yes I do like halo but I do think it's overrated.

His reviews really need to say for entertainment purposes, ONLY.

Most people that have played through PH would have to question whether yahtzee even played the game...especially if he was being serious...which he wasn't....

Not sure I would use his review for the basis of you game purchase. Might wanna try renting it if you're not sold.

His reviews seem really spot-on to me. Everything I've heard him gripe about is legitimate. But that's just me I guess. :/

It's not just you cos I've agreed with everything he's said so far and yes I have tried PH and I agree with him.

*holds up flame shield against fanboys*

Put the flame shield away...

He complains about the common elements in Nintendo games...don't disagree entirely. However, IMO, PH is different enough to debunk his trite opinion of it.

His complaints about sailing are rubbish and completely debunked by the fact you can warp.

Other than that, he whines about things HE doesn't necessarily like vs what most of the gaming world don't seem to have a problem with. I'm shocked he didn't call PH a kiddie game. :)

He loves shock and comedy...thus entertainment.

To each his own...I for the most part view his reviews as hilarious. But I certainly don't take him seriously.

Oh no, an element of skill in a game? Let's knock some points off because it's too hard!
Uhh... I'm assuming he means that the Spring is legitimately difficult to control. Skill and difficulty are not always synonymous.

This will be the next game I buy, although I didn't realse Gears of War was out tomorrow.

I planned to wait till Christmas, but I played at gamestop and I don't know if I can wait.

Initial reaction: My retinas exploded immediately. Seriously the graphics and style will make you wonder why real life is so overated. Forget drugs, get Galaxy.

After wondering why I kept falling off the platform and not landing on the other side, I realized I was at the main hub of the game, the castle, if you will. I finally found the room to launch myself to other galaxies, and realized only the bee world was unlocked. I was kind of dissapointed, given I'd looked forward to this level the least. The controls worked great and spinning is perfect. There's something great about picking up jewels, it just feels right.

After running in circles a bit I thought I was stuck, before finding a vine. I managed to find a warp tunnel and entered a space rock. A square to run around in from wall to wall dodging rocks until you get the star eventually this led me to a floating space rock I enjoyed immensely. After landing back down on Bee world, I killed a beetle type mini boss and got a star. I decided that I'd enjoyed this demo enough and left, grudgingly noticing that I'd unlocked another galaxy, and the person behind me was reeping the benefits.

This was a review for a 20 minute demo in a gamestop.
