Supreme Commander demo tmr!!!

So, rts not usually my cup of tea but this demo was rather impressive. One question for those of you in the know/betatesters/whathaveyou: There are three factions, but are there substantial gameplay differences between these three factions? I'm talking differences like in starcraft where buildings are built differently from faction to faction, units are produced differently, units often have unique abilities/combination of abilites and so on.

I like the techonological implementation of the game, but if the factions are similar to the extent that is usual in franchises like c'n'c then it might bore me quickly.

So, how different are the factions and in what manner?

From what i have read the different factions have differing play styles which become more obvious the further up the Tech Tree you go...then again i may be totally wrong! :p

Oh and in C&C3 the Scrin will be playing totally different to Nod/GDI ;)

It was alright..I'm not extremely impressed though. I probably won't be buying, at least not until it goes on sale. I'll stick with Company of Heroes and Starcraft.

Excuse my ignorance, but do we have a release date on this baby yet?

I think it's late Feb...if I'm not mistaken.

It was just confirmed inside GPG.net, by Jeremy Ables, that the current multiplayer beta will end on February 12.

So if you haven't yet played or want some more before release I suggest that you head on over and get busy.

After that you have a 2 week waiting period before the real thing becomes available.

See you there!!

I was too lazy to look for an exact date, sadly...

Great! That would mean infernal + supreme commander to keep me occupied while I postpone upgrading my rig to summer.

Good thing Episode 2 is delayed then, I suppose :p

Hmmm... fairly fun, but it's kinda hard to go back to such a traditional RTS after playing COH. Still, I'd buy it.

Overall factions are extremely similar except for a few points:

Cybrans-Direct-fire lasers and plasma weapons, moderate artillery, weak missiles, medium power ships, strong bombers, weak fighters/gunships, medium nukes. Offense-geared superunits. They can built at longer ranges than the other factions and use nanobots to build structures. They have more wheeled vehicles and bots. Their units are lightly armored but have long range and fire quickly.

UEF-Guns and bullets with ballistic arc. Powerful artillery, extremely powerful missiles, innacurate weaponry, anti-unit bombers, powerful navy, strong gunships, weak fighters.Support-geared superunits. They build with blueprints and lasers.Really powerful nukes. They have more tanks. Their units are more heavily armored.

Aeon-Ion weapons, mix of ballistic and direct fire weaponry, powerful static defenses, extremely accurate missiles, better AA, faster but weaker units all around. They fire fewer rounds but do more damage per round. Weak navy. Extremely expensive, huge and powerful superunits. They build in a Terminator-2 style fashion by molding liquid metal from the ground up. Almost all units can hover over water. Their units have mid to light armor, are very manuverable and have low fire-rates. Their nukes are weak compared to the other factions.

UEF seems overpowered from theotherdude's description.

actually they are the least played race. They were so weak in the inital build that GPG had to give them better accuracy, firing rates and damage. They never fully recovered from this and are very rarely played. However, now that they've been balanced a bit peopole are starting to creep back into UEF for their powerful artillery.

On the open battlefield UEF loses a great deal of the time because their level I and II units can easily be out manuvered and flanked by the faster Cybran and Aeon units. Whenever a UEF force of tanks comes along most cybran and Aeon players simply roll their units right over them, or circle around them. This is because although UEF units are powerful and well armored they turn and fire very slowly, ultimatley doing less damage.

Also, UEF has no offensive superunits. They just have one big mobile artillery platform and a submarine aircraft carrier. They literally have nothing that can handle huge amounts of tier III units on the battlefield like the Cybrans Mokeylord or the Aeon Galactic Collossus. They also have no flying superunits.

Doesn't the UEF have an artillery that can hit anywhere on the map?

Scathis for the win!!! If you havnt seen it in action yet or better yet used it against an enemy your missing out!!

I wouldn't say at all that the aeon have the weakest navy, a lot of people say they have the strongest.

The aeon also have the strongest superunits imo, even though they take just about the longest to build.

it's their superunit the mavor, which takes 3:30 hrs iirc to build with one engineer. (you can of course speed it up but it requires a powerful economy).

Am I the only one who wasn't all that impressed by this?

Big minus for me is how slow unit building is, considering that it's supposed to be a "macro management" RTS.

I'll give it another shot though. Anybody know if it's possible to change the HUD size/position/minimize the HUD? It's WAY too big tbh, not enough space to view your units.

if you turn up the resolution the interface gets better

pressing alt-up will move it to the side and then back down again

not sure what you mean by building units is slow, you can que up a bunch and press repeat orders and then leave the factory alone.

You can speed up the game by pressing the plus button on the numberpad if you think the whole game is too slow.

For those who have never played TA before, building can be sped up by assigning multiple engineers to assist with the building. This includes building units, buildings and upgrading buildings.

Anyone remember how long it took to build a single Krogoth in TA? XD

Thankyou :)

Didn't realize that builders could help out with unit creation too.

I think my main problem is that I don't know the scale of the game just yet. I don't know whether 10 bombers is enough to clear out X fortification, don't know if 3 engineers is enough to sustain a base, etc.

Honestly I couldn't even play the game so I don't know if it's good or not. I did play it for like 5min and saw some features from the good old TA (collect metal from destroyed vehicles, suck trees for energy etc.).

The reason why I just could not play it was the UI. I mean it's uterly terrible! Some how reminds me of some RTS that I played on the Amiga 500. The game has said to be very moddable... First mod I wanna see is the decent UI mod. I'll try that alt-up thing today... If it doesn't help I'm gonna buy beer with the money I had saved for this game :D

what resolution are you running it at?

it is quite bad and bulky at 1024x768 but if you go up to 1280x1024 it's quite good (though still a bit big, but that doesn't matter as much in this game since you can just zoom out)

Well I use 1024*768 the next resolution I could use is the 11xx*xxx one, that's the highest. Plus, 1024 is the only one that I can use with 85Hz refreshrate (highest rate my monitor can go). I have like a 6 year old CRT which is about to die in any second.

I guess I could use my video projector it goes to 720p, if the game supports that. RTS with 92" screen could be fun :D

the game supports quite a few resolutions, including dual screen which is nice

try it and take pictures! D:

Hahaha, I think I finally got the hang of this. Pretty fun :D

Still haven't got the game flow completely down yet. Dunno if I want to get it just yet though, I don't feel that i've overplayed CoH just yet, and i'm still way too used to the gameplay in CoH.

That's my biggest gripe with RTS'. Every time you get a new one, you have to get a new concept/gameplay flow/strategy system into your head. Gotta relearn everything with each new game that comes out.

sink, for me most RTS are the same and CoH is one of the few where I really had to learn much. I've had to rethink and that for SupCom too, like with CoH.

The same strategies and things are in most, like microing, turtling, rushing or whatever.

----

About an hour left on the download but has anyone tried this on Vista ?

If not, well, I guess I'll be the first one to do so (I also have dual core / dual monitors so I'll say how they fair too).

Trying to resist the urge to download..and play..

But wait, the demo is still up! :O

I want to buy the game, and not have some of the campaign spoiled for me. At least with the beta it *and you* taught me how to kick ass..so I shouldn't be stuck on missions!

D:

it's actually a bit challenging if you don't know what to expect

you should get it anyways

Ok how do you guys think these systems would run the game, and which would be better?

Intel Duo 2 (2ghz)
2GB Ram
Radeon x1400 w/ 256mb

or

Intel 3.06 Ghz
1GB Ram
Nvidia 6800 Ultra (256mb)

Download the demo and try it on both PC's and see how it runs?
To be honest I'd switch the graphics cards over. iirc the 6800 is a better card than the x1400.

I agree with this post 100%

I would, but... the one is a Laptop.

Hmmm, apart from the RAM is pretty much the same as my one i'm getting Monday! :O

You got Vista on it?

Let me know how it runs regardless on the laptop please mate :)
