system requirements

my specs

My comp specs are:
P4 2.4
Radeon 9800 Pro
512 Megs RAM
Logitech Z680s

I should be able to run it maxed out at at least 1024x768, right? What kind of performance boost would I see if I added another 512 of RAM?

those systems look good.

i just upgraded to 1gb of ram because i noticed my friends computer had a slower cpu, but reponse time in many tasks was insanely higher than mine. for instance in battlefield 1942, when i press escape to go into options it takes like 10-20secs sometimes, but for him its instantaneous.

i think for these upcoming games, getting 1gb isnt a bad choice at all.

What about my choice in system upgrades? I know it will run HL2, but I am not too concerned with eye candy as I am a decent framerate. You can have all the eye candy yuo want but it wont matter if you cant play. ATI Radeon 9600XT, AMD Athlon 2800 "Barton", 512MB of PC2700 DDR. I am hoping for at least 30 FPS with a 1024 x 768 resolution and mid to high range settings depending on the FPS I may get.

well lately, the 9600xt isn't really a great option for a video card because the 9800pro 128mb 128bit version is only about $25 more and considerably faster.

1700+ XP
GeForce3 ti200 128MbRam
512 DDR RAM

But I'm gonna buy a Radeon 9800 PRO 128MbRam.
But it's kinda strange because I can run Far Cry smoooooth! - ?

if farcry is smooth to you, hl2 shouldn't be much less smooth than that. but there is a difference between smooth and silky like butter smooth

I run Far Cry in 1024x768 and it runs great! The model texture is at High and the rest of the settings are at normal and a couple of others at high...Mmmm!
I'm happy even though I need to run Half-Life2 at 800x600!

EDIT: Actually I think some of the settings are at Very High

Athalon 1800+
512mb RAM
Radeon 9700 PRO (yes, 7)

Whats the major difference between a 9700 and a 9800/9600? I know the the later came out later but is it better at all?

P4 2.8 GHz with HT
9800XT
1GB DDR

Runs FarCry above 32 FPS at max everything, 60 at second to max.

The 9800 pro is clocked considerably higher than the 9700 pro, and probably has higher quality RAM. Either way, a 9700 pro should handle the game just fine

i have a 800 mhz athlon a 256 meg ddr and a geforce fx5200 and it works low quality but no lag !!!!!

The stolen build isn't any representation of how the full product will look or run.

ya it really helped. im set now fora computer. gona order the parts soon.....

Here's what I have now:
[email protected]
256mb ram
geforce fx 5200 pci
30gb hdd

no agp, it's a dell so can't really upgrade, hate it, probably gonna sell it and get this:

amd athlon xp 2500+ 1.83ghz
512mb pc2700 ram
ati radeon 9600xt or 9800 pro if prices drop
60gb hdd

How will the new system run?

What about me..

Athlon64 3400+
2x 220GB Western Digtal
2x 1GB Mushkin BH-5 (2.2.2.5)
ATI X800XT 256MB
24' Nec Ultra Flat
7.1 Creative Sound System

Do you think it will run atleast at 800x600 low/medium details?

No, 640x480 low details is the best you get :burp:

Id suggest at least an Athlon256 50,000+
4x 5,000GB Western Digital
5x 1GB Mushkin BH-5 (5.5.5.5)
ATI 19800XXT 1GB
54' Nec Ultra Flat
999.1 Creative sound system

at least if u get this u can run hl2 on low-medium with at least 30fps.

WHATS AGP?!

accelerated graphics port. its what all current fast video cards plug into on your motherboard. your motherboard will have one, and your 9800pro will fit in it. its a brownish slot.

LMAO

I'm not sure what AGP stands for, but if you want a new computer you want a graphic card that's AGP and not PCI. Most (96, 98, x800+) are AGP, I don't think you'll find a PCI version of those in quite a time.

are the details low, medium, high, highest? meaning highest is the , maximum of every single detail?

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ running at 1.83 ghz
512 MB pc2700
And three things I am upgrading to soon

Windows XP
9600XT
120 gig 7200 rpm hdd

How would it run?

how do you find out what speed your athlon 64 runs at? or all they all the same? (athlon 63 3200+)

im gonna ask this one more time cause i changed the video card im getting to an even better one:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+(hyper-transport)
ASUS K8V DELUXE VIA
ENERMAX 450 WATT POWER SUPPLY WITH DUAL FAN
Kingston 512 MB PC3200 DDR400(maybe change that to 1 gig or 768.)
RADEON 9800 XT 256 MB

Will the game run smoothly with all the graphics on max and with good fps and resolution? Also is the motherboard, video card, power supply, RAM all good matches for each other?! so nothing is limiting the capabilities?!

no way to REALLY know till the game comes out, since we can't test the final version. but with that system, theoretically you should be very pleased with the performance in hl2 at high detail!

Why don't you swap out the 9800XT and get a X800 Pro? Much faster performance for the same price.

yes it would. Then again if I were you I would wait for it to actually have a set release date, then buy the new 939 pin cpus along with one of the better mobos using that socket. (then a x800pro or xt)

x800 is about $40 more, here in the US anyway.

Asus Radeon 9600 XT (got HL2 with it)
768MB PC-2100 RAM
2.6GHz Celeron --oc--> 3.02GHz (my 2.4c "blew out" when I pushed it too far)
80GB 7200RPM 2MB Cache (meh, getting a new one soon)

Think HL2 will run well on this? I'm hoping it'll do fine, I know I'll be able to play at or near the highest settings, but I'm just looking for a second opinion.

*Edit* Heh, first post and I've been here since October, silly me. *Edit*

I'd get a X800 pro/XT over a 9800 XT Darkknighttt

Sure it's more expensive - but performs far better, will last you longer and save you money in the long run.

If an X800 is too pricey (it is for me) then get a 9800 pro 128. It's the best value for money card about at the moment, and will be able to run HL2 fine. If you need to upgrade down the road you can sell it and get a X800. (whatever you do don't get a 9800 pro 256 or 9800 XT. Neither card is much, if any, better than a 9800 pro 128. They just cost far more)

Plus, you can easily mod a recent 128 meg 9800 pro into a 128 meg XT anyway, I did.
Best value for money around.

Ok people. One thing I'd like to clarify. For those who say that 100FPS looks any better than 60, you are wrong. the Human eye cannot see any difference between 60 FPS and 100. After 60, the human eye is unable to tell the difference in frame rate. To lift the spirits of those who think that 30FPS is crap, almost all console games run at a steady 30FPS. The transition between 30 and 60FPS is a very, very, very slight change is the smoothness of chracters movements, etc., and it's only noticeable to the most expirienced gamer. I'd just like to point that out.
