system requirements

Sounds like the system specs will be bumped up to 1Ghz with a Dx7 level card (they haven't decided whether or not to keep supporting Dx6 level cards)

if as rumoured HL2 makes proper use of the efficiency and speed of rendering using shader model 3.0 then th clear leader for the games HIGH end modes will be the NV40 and ATI will join scope with the R500 at a later date since the r420 only sports model 2.0 shaders - I would say wait for the Pro 6800 or non ultra coming in at $399 and $299 respectively - and current gen cards will also drop in price as always. the new cards are due this summer so plenty of waiting and seeing time

HMMMMMM...

I have a all-in-wonder 9800 now...I am thinking I should sell it now while I can still get $200+ for it in the local classifieds paper, then buy a new AIW when they drop in May or June... Sound good?

The r420 is rumoured to only have vertexshader 3.0
I would wait for the r420's first benchmarks before you jump on the bandwagon and buy a NV40 without knowing the competition.

If you want a 9800pro, get one now. The price on it won't go down much, if at all. It's been discontinued already by sapphire. ATi is about to do so as well, if they haven't already. The 9800pro cuts into ATi's 9600XT card's profits, so it's being discontinued. The store I shop at said whatever they get now of the 9800pros is gonna be it. The new line of cards from ATi and NVidia will cause cards like the 9800XT to drop in price, I would guess to about 400 CDN.

permit me to say bollocks.

what you just said about the 9800 pro cutting into the 9600xt's is a good thing for ATI since the 9800 pro costs more than the 9600xt.

what part of that is bad? :rolling:

I don't need to jump any bandwagons to know that R420 wont have any of the extended video features of NV40 such as hardware mpeg 2/4/wmv9 encoding and decoding as well as upgradeability as codecs update as well as full quality HDTV - these are things people like me who encode and decode movies regularly can do far more efficiently with no cpu overheads

That's not a bad idea amneziac85... maybe I'll dump mine too...

damn you... i thought i had the impressive set up but no.... you have to go and dwarf mine like it was nothing.... just wondering but what the hell do you need a comp like that for?

my specs
amd64 3200+
thermaltake venus 12 HS
1gig pc4000
radeon 9800xt
160gig hd
audigy 2
all thrown in a black xaser 3
my speakres are logitech z-680's

IS THE 9600 XT BETTER THAN THE 9800 XT?!?!?!?!?! noob question but can someone answer it?!

it is?! ohi thought the 9800 was the best. oh well

What the? I said no, meaning that the 9600XT is NOT better than the 9800XT....i dunno how you managed to get the complete opposite from me :rolling:

LOL! sorry i dont know how i got that message from it. okay so the 9800 xt is better, good. okay.

Here's a quote from Doug Lombardi in the new PCZone:

Doug Lombardi, about system specs:

PCZone: "Is the minimum spec still going to be a PIII 733 as promissed 12 months ago?"

Doug: "We'll probably going to push that to a 1GHz processor with 128MB RAM and a DX7 or DX6 level 3D card - we're not sure which yet. We'll be pointing people towards running 256MB RAM and an ATI 9600, 9600XT, 9800 or 9800XT 3D card for optimal performance. Once you get over a 1.2GHz processor, the improvement that you'll see will be negligible, so long as you have all of those other pieces in play".

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEN ILL BE FINE WITH MY COMPUTER!!!!!!!

Pentium 4 @1.80 GHZ
256 MB RAM
Probably am going to get a Radeon 9800 XT 256 MB, if not Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB
SUCH A RELIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sweet...bring on those physics and graphics. My computer is set. Athlon XP 2800+, 9600 Pro, 1 gig of RAM.

Now that I look at it, the processor and RAM specs look a little low. Over 1.2 GHz performance gain is negligible? 256 MB of RAM? Heck, every game that I purchase now uses atleast 512 MB RAM easily and uses way more than 1.2 GHz of CPU power. I think they are underestimating the system specs.

Does my AMD Athlon XP 1700+ have a significant bad influence on my ATI AIW 9800 Pro 128 Mb? I've got 512 Mb of RAM.

Your CPU probably does limit your graphics card, but probably not by much.

GHz doesn't matter as much as clock speeds these days..
IE. My brother's laptop underclocks itself by 1GHz (Athlon 64 3000+, 1.8GHz [give or take] down to 800MHz) if you disconnect it from a power source and make it run on the batteries..

The performance loss in FarCry, MP2, etc is pretty negligible.. maybe 10 FPS at most

I don't know the technical reason, but the reasoning goes basically like this.
Your vid card has an optimum speed that it works at. If your CPU is not able to process the information and send it to your vid card at that optimum speed, then there will be some slowdown. Just like the analogy of " a chain is only as strong as its weakest link".

What u reckon?

My PC is

Pentium 4
3.06 GHz
*Edit* Oh and 512 mb of RAM

Only thing i wos worried bout wos my NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200. Will that work 'properly' with the special effect graphics etc. Coz i realy want the full experiance of good HL2 gaming :)

The 5200 will severly cripple your gaming experience, especially with the rest of your system being as good as it is.

My advice, wait for the new radeons to be released. Then (after checking out reviews on both the X800 and 6800 ultra) if you can afford to buy the latest card then get the best one. If you can't afford it however the release of the X800 should push down the price of the current top-end ATI hardware, so you could pick up a 9800 pro/XT for a bargain price

Ill probly get the 9800xt, thnx for help Murray

No problem. I just have one thing to say about the XT though. It is a fair bit more expensive than a 9800 pro and from a lot of benchmarks i have seen the performance difference doesn't really warrant the huge difference in price

The german PC Games magazine played HL2 on a really "old" pc with a Pentium 3 CPU (yes, P III and not a P4 with 3.0 GHz!), only 256 MB RAM and Radeon 9800.
This sounds too good.

Money is not a problem, ill either get 9800 XT or Pro , depends wot mood im in :) , ta for help u 2

hope my 1.3 ghz cpu with 512 ram and radeon 9600pro run's well with HL2.... I e-mailed gabe. Let's see what he will say.... :x

I hope that my Pentium 2 with 64mb of ram and 4mb PCI video card will be able to handle it

I think my system will kick ass in HL2 as is, but I'm getting either the 6800U or the X800XT.

-AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 2.2GHz
-1024 MB ECC registered Muskin High performance RAM (PC3200)
-Nvidia GeForce 5600 256MB (soon to be 6800U or X800XT)
-Soundblaster Audigy 2
-ASUS SK8N motherboard
-Coolermaster heatsink
-420 Watt Power Supply
-Blue case light
-4 case fans
-Viewsonic flatscreen monitor
-Microsoft Optical mouse

I read this thing in a magazine last night that says if you want to be able to play Doom^3, you will need to have a P4 3.0GHz/64 FX-51 along with around 2 gigs of RAM. I though "What the hell? 2 gigs recommended for D3, yeah, sure." They also estimate HL2's release in November.

what do you mean by that dude??? so the other spec's that you mention at the bottom is your grand mothers?

Ummm...what?

athlon 2600+ xp
512mb dual channel 3200 ram
120gig hd
128mb 9600xt

this ought to handle everything maxed out shouldn't it?

What kind of a f*cked up magazine is this?! 3.0GHZ!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 GIGS OF RAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY SH*T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well the system I will be building should be more than enough to handle it:
3 GHz Pentium 4
512 MB RAM
9800 Pro (though i will wait for the drop in price)
40 & 80 GB HDs

k, does anyone know how to add a picture and edit my forums account?!

if i get a new video card(9800 pro) will my fps go up?! currently have nvidia geforce4MX 64 MB.
