take a look at world military budgets

lol, all our 'enemies' are near the bottom :)
luxembourg is next!!!

interesting link, btw.

GO CANADA!!!
7.6 Billion...don't mess with us we'll f**@ you up.

it doesn't show how that figure is relative to the GDP of each country. would be nice to know. i'd assume that most countries spend round about the same percentage on defence, and those in the coalition spend a higher percentage of their GDP on defence. /captain_obvious

We have more military equipment than some countries have people :sniper:

Too bad we're spread too thin!

US does spend a lot on defence, but, they:

1. Use it.
2. Need it. (because they use it, and HAVE to use it to defend, even on US Soil)
3. Have the money.

GO CANADA!

I'm surprised Japan is so far up there. Whenever I hear about Japan's military, it is always described as a small "defense force" that uses submachineguns as opposed to rifles.

I heard each missile they sent at Iraq at the beginning of the attack cost like 60 million dollars each.

Really depends on the type of missile, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if that was the average pricetag of some of the more advanced missiles.

Whoa 400 billion dollars.Wonder what you could do with that.(Charitably wise)

god the U.S. is millitaristic.. makes me disgusted to live here. /vomit

wtf

why do you always persist in starting flames? don't try to deny it. you do it in religious threads, and you do it in political/war related threads. just stop it. it's pathetic. and he's entitled to his opinion.

Alot of people here want to drastically increase military spending up here in Canada, including the oppostion party which has grown in power becuase of the election just a few weeks ago.

Besides, without the US spending all that money other countries would need to spend more to support other military initiatives like peace keeping.

Thank-you.

~~~
I didn't know Japan spent so much on their defense force. Technically, they don't have a military.
As for Iraq and North Korea, they don't have to spend lots of money on a military to be dangerous. They just need one WMD.
Having a large military has other benefits such as creating jobs for our economy as well as defending the United States. If you have a problem with it, leave the US. I am sure North Korea and Cuba will take you in.
Just because I disagree with how much emphasis is put on millitary in our country, dosent mean I dislike it. The beuty of the U.S. is I am entitled to my opinion and can fight for and campaign for people who might spend less on millitaristic thigns. Sad thing is most people disagree with how I feel. But in places like canada I believe there are more people willing to argue all different sides. again OPINION so dude please stop flaming everyone at every turn :X thank you dadelus I agree with you, he needs to stop.
Hell yes, we'll crash our ****ing 3 rescue copters into our enemies!
Got a late start on this thread so........
399 billion dollars! Ack! No wonder we're so far down in the hole.
weird that people think 1.4 billion dollars suddenly makes their military shitty. saddam had a great military. also interesting is that, since we do the vast majority of the UN peacekeeping, naturally our gross defence budget is going to be pretty big. i imagine if there had been no war on terror, youd all still be shocked by americas result. i think its more interesting how low north korea's budget it. youd think it would be much more for the army they have.
These numbers don't mean anything unless you know how much money the government has for everything, so you can see what percentage they spend on military.
can someone please explain to me how japan, a country that is not allowed to have an army spends 42.6 billion dollars a year on one?
mexico 5.9 billion :dozey: go us!!! weeeeeeee lol :p
free tacos for everyone!
Why do you have the freedom to say what you want and state and your opinion and he cannot? I understand what he said was a little off base but some people have a lot of national pride..I guess you dont..but thats your own problem I suppose.
So, like others have already mentioned, what's up with Japan? What are they spending that money on?
I'd worry more about Germany's budget than Japan's. They aren't allowed to have much of a military either. For obvious reasons. Anyone could do a lot of damage with 24.9 billion dollars. And Germany is known to be rather creative when it comes to warfare...
Yeah, they're going to make a huge nuclear rocket silo in space.
"The US military budget is almost as much as the rest of the world's.
The US military budget is more than 8 times larger than the Chinese budget, the second largest spender.
The US military budget is more than 29 times as large as the combined spending of the seven “rogue” states (Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria) who spent $14.4 billion.
It is more than the combined spending of the next twenty three nations.
The United States and its close allies account for some two thirds to three-quarters of all military spending, depending on who you count as close allies (typically NATO countries, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan and South Korea)
The seven potential “enemies,” Russia, and China together spend $116.2 billion, 27.6% of the U.S. military budget. "
some interesting facts
