Techno?

I dunno, I meant Techno as in complete computer made, snappy stuff that makes you foot tap.

Techno/trance or dance isn't the only electronic music, god damnit. There is real talented stuff out there.

Truth. Y'all a bunch of poo-heads.

According to you guys i dont know what real techno is so lets hear it then.

Techno is the worst piss-poor excuse for music I've ever heard!

I posted a list of artists on the first ****ing page.

Get a clue.

I'm convinced, however, that your ridiculous distaste for anything electronic will preempt any possibility of acquiring a taste for it.

I knew NOTHING about music, and in 4 months my music teacher taught me how to sing, play electric guitar, and WRITE music, next month I'm startin the bass, thats why I said anyone can learn it, personal experience

Pfft, like I said, anybody can teach you to "play" the instrument, but nobody can "teach" you to rip it up like Paige, Clapton, or Baker.

If you don't even know who they are, then you have no right to bash instruments.

its about 5 mins of clips i took out of some of the techno livesets i have.

When I say techno I mean it as a term that includes any subgenre; acid, electro, house, jungle, dnb, "idm", breakcore, you name it. The problem is that most people think of straight four-to-the-floor when they hear the word techno, and they think of all that crappy teenage trance that's getting played on the radio/tv.

People also seem to think that all electronic music is made on computers, that's also wrong, a lot of artists use real electronic instruments like synths, drummachines, samplers and the lot. And the thing about electronic music is that you don't only need to know HOW to play YOUR instrument likem mostly any guitar/bass/drum player does.

You actually need to know how to use/program every instrument you need, you need to learn about scales, you need to learn about crescendos, you need to learn about songcomposition that varies from the "poppy" chorus/refrain-focused stereotypes.

You need to learn how to use new machines, you need to learn how to connect them and synchronize them together, you need to learn how to repair them, you need to learn how to correctly record and mix them, you need to learn how to produce it in the sense of equalizing/compression/exciting/reverb/delay and the lot.

Summed up you need to be both an artist, a studioproducer, an engineer and most of all you need to be creative to get noticed(as opposed to how popmusic uses only 3 chords)

 i give up

Reaktor is a bit of an elitist who is more concerned about genre description than actual music.

"Techno" and "electronic music" are practically synonymous in a mainstream sense. Why you should get your panties into a twist over it is something I don't get.

I use the word techno in it's old sense, from the days the music was born. I'm pretty prissy when it comes to genres too, but I prefer using techno as another word for electronic music and just call what he would call "techno" with more specific names like house, acid etc.

Lets not start flaming.

In a mainstream sense, we only use 10% of our brains, 13 is unlucky, god exists, could've means could of, drugs are evil apart from the alcohol and tobacco, and david beckham is the best footballer in the world.

Although i have already explained this a thousand times including once already in this thread, and even uploaded samples, ill do it one more time.
House is not a more specific name than techno. House and techno are two different, specific types of dance music. Trance is another. The terms are not interchangeable. Calling house techno or vice versa is as accurate as calling an apple a banana. How can i possibly make this any clearer?

When we speak of techno, are we referring to the entire electronic genre or the 4-to-the-floor club stuff?

Any way, I also listen to iTunes radio a lot. Bassdrive and UrbanDrop for some straight-up DnB, GrooveSalad and SomaFM for more down-tempo chillout shite, cliqhop and StaticBeats for stuff on the more alternative edge (particularly cliqhop).

As for specific artists I listen to:

Aphex Twin
Squarepusher
Boards of Canada
Autechre
Amon Tobin
Orbital
Venetian Snares
Royksopp

The occasional Underworld track as well. :)

That's like all the same stuff I like in this genre! Anyway, what's the name of the up and coming Boards Of Canada Album again? It's in Crazyharijj (can't spell)'s avatar kthxbye

The Campfire Headphase. It'll be out the 17th but Warp's www.bleep.com will be posting a preview of one of the songs tomorrow.

Well it's already out there on teh interweb, even though there's some fake ones out there it exists... WAREZ ALERT etc

But yeah

Those are completely different things and not comparable. This is concerned over semantics, not percieved fact.

O-Zone is friggin Grandma Pop Musik:LOL:

if you guys are looking for some nice... techno music (don't really know what genre it'd fall in) try the whole Nyana albums by Dj Tiesto. Best stuff that's come out, at least in my opinion.

Reaktor4, that huge post you made... you are GOD. I've been trying to explain what you said to so many people in the past, with no success. Especially the genre thing and how when people hear the word "techno" they think those standard 4/4 kick and clap and hat songs.

The only techno artist I really listen to is Aphex Twin, simply for the reason that he has SO MANY songs, all of pure gold. They are not the least bit repetitive. If you can call real techno repetitive, when rock songs are probably even more repetitive, (choruses anyone? real techno doesn't have them) you haven't heard any real techno. You can take any two 5 second segments of a good Aphex Twin song and they won't be the same.

Whoever posted that putfile media link, with the techno samples... That's the kind of boring techno that gives it a bad name IMO.

You need to check yourself, first of all : Aphex has lots of tracks that are repetitive, I'm wondering if you've ever listened to any of his tracks. It's also stupid to say that techno(I interpret this as electronic music) doesn't have choruses, cause a lot of it do, but not all.

And how can you call reaktor4 a god and then at the end of the post say that whoever posted that soundclip was giving techno a bad name, when that person in fact was reaktor4. Kind of a contradiction.

The ones that are giving electronic music a bad name are mainly young un-educated people with no real interest in music that have no in-depth knowledge whatsoever regarding it.

Aphex Twin's old stuff has repetition, but I don't really mind it because it's generally got good melody (see I Care Because You Do and Selected Ambient Works Vol. 1). This really doesn't hold true to his later work. The RDJ Album, while having recognizable patterns after a few good listens, has a lot more crammed into it than most other artists can manage. Ditto for drukqs, which has more alternating segments and patterns than any other album I know.

Yes, his later work is often less and less repetitive and more focused on progressive percussion and Satie'esque melodies. But there's nothing wrong with repetitiveness if it's done right and modulated a little.

Exactly. Repetition employed correctly can be great.

I don't know what I was thinking. I guess I kind of made up some stuff to prove a non-existant point. But I still think those songs Reaktor4 posted were meh.

Hehe, no worries. I agree with you wholeheartedly, the tracks he posted were garbage to my ears.

Sorry to disappoint you but what i posted is a PERFECT example of what real techno is (trust me, i have been listening to techno for over 10 years, and djing and producing almost as long). Dont like it? You dont like techno, so stop saying you do.
As for aphex twin, i actually havnt heard a lot of their stuff, and the reason for that is that its not really real techno (which is what i posted, and listen to). It does have a sorta technoish sound but it certainly is not a good representation of what you would hear if you went into any record/dj shop worth its salt and asked to hear the current top ten techno records.
