what're some city building games that have been released in the past couple years (or later) ? I've been looking around and haven't had any luck, any suggestions?

Sim City 4 is probably the best one currently. With Rush Hour expansion.

I couldn't find it at my local gameshops or anything. is it....worth "Acquiring?"

Check out Anno 1404: Dawn of Discovery.

It's kind of like a city building game. But it's more accurately described as an economy game. You start in an archipelago, and you set out to colonize islands and get a foothold. You build cities with people(beggars, peasants, citizens, patricians, nobles), and you work to satisfy their demands which become increasingly complex to deliver. You have to settle other Islands, even if they are not self sufficient, and create supply lines to supply each of your islands with what they need to survive. Since each island has different fertilities, and certain things require a particular fertility to develop that thing on, you can't just concentrate production all on one Island.

You also deal with the Orient, which is a different group of people entirely, and you have to also satisfy their needs and help them develop as well, and use some of their things(spices, quartz) to satisfy the needs of the Occidental settlements you own.

You will have like 1-3 opponents in the game that you compete against, and also have to deal with corsairs. There is combat and stuff in the game, but it's not the main focus of the game, but that element is there.

Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom/Caesar IV
Children of the Nile
Tropico 2
Civilization3
The Settlers sucks.

Pharaoh is bloody awesome up and till an earthquake takes out your biggest pyramid 50% through construction and there is nowhere else on the map to place a new one.

Why would you want to play a city building game when you're just going to wreck it by blowing it all to hell by a nuclear reactor explosion.

Yeah I loved it though, having to mine the clay and build bricks, farming the Nile and worshipping Gods - very well thought out.

I don't like cotn. It's just not the same game. Removal of monies and having to mess around with shops and crap. Urgh.

I didn't like it at first but when you get the main points of it I like it better than the Caesar/Pharaoh/Emperor games.

And there was no money in ancient Egypt. The game's much more stress free because of that. The people pay for everything with bread/services, so you need to have loads of farms etc.

This is one reason why I loved playing A Tale in the Desert. Gathering mud, collecting grass... Making mud bricks and drying them out in the sun. Using those bricks to build buildings. Farming sheep, etc.

Lots of fun. I love stuff like that.

This happened once in the endgame of a marathon match of Civilization 4. I felt awesome having all my cities with nuclear power plants. I even renamed the first explosion after Chernobyl.

Man, it wrecked my economy.

I liked Sim City 4 personally. Although my region was more like a city-state and I was more like a dictator than a diplomatic mayor. Instituting high-taxes and the occasional meteor shower for when my pupils piss me off.

The only problem with SC4 though and any Sim City game for that matter is the rigid grid based maps. It can get frustrating to build highways and city blocks the way you want them to be. SC4's grids and zones are more aggravating though than SC3000.

BTW, I had a great idea for a game if it doesn't already exist. It would be great if there was a SimCity type game out there, but you really could be an actual dictator. Preferably a more modern dictator sim where you could do modern dictator type stuff like executions via gas chambers and invasions all while building you evil empire and it's military. Anyone know of any game like that?

There a differnce between Children of the Nile: Enhanced Edition and Children of the Nile: Alexandria?

One I loved was Zeus: Master of Olympus. Anno 1404 is good. Simcity 4 with Rush hour.

Enhanced edition is a patch to the original COTN game. So Enhanced is now the base game and Alexandria is an addon campaign.

That's almost exactly what Tropico is. Really worth checking out. :)

The only city-building-game (if it even qualifies for that genre) that I liked was Theme Park. Never cared much for them Sim City games.

Do the Dungeon Keeper games count? They were pretty good.

More like ancient, if that's the one published by Sierra. Must be 10+ years ago.

I believe Sierra was the publisher, not %100 sure. It was still an awesome game though, (despite its age) with equally awesome music tracks, IMO.

I remember Pharaoh, pretty good game although I haven't played it in probably 6 or 7 years. Wasn't there either an expansion or a quasi-sequel?

I prefer Ceasar III to Pharaoh. Other games I can suggest are:

-Theme Hospital (rat shooting levels ftw)
-2D Rollercoaster Tycoon games
-Populous 3
-SimFarms (it's one of my fav sim games)
-Startopia

Anno 1404 is a really fun game, a great new city builder. Cities XL is also looking good at the moment.

Theme Hospital is legendary too :D

There was an expansion called Cleopatra, added some good stuff. New items/monuments, etc.

I love Egyptian-themed games though, wish there were more of them.
