Hey All, What Is The Beta?
Please No "It Is The Stolen Build That Hackers Took Etc Etc"
Just What Is The Beta? Is It The Full Game But Missing Things? If Yes What?
Does It Have The Full Story?
BTW According To The Agereement I Agreed To When Joining The Forums I Should Not Be Banned For TALKING About The Beta....
 
Its not the full game and its missing alot of things and the beta itself doesnt have any spoilers its just the sounds it brings that have spoilers
 
It's missing alot of things. Little bit of plot with some of the original voice and sount fx. Ummm not extremely exciting, but it was pretty neat :p

EDIT: Yup we are allowed to talk about it, just no trading :p

EDIT 2: did anyone else with it (admit it lol) have their enimies move / attack? I didn't :(
 
the stolen build is very incomplete. Its not the full game as some of the levels have no textures or enemies in them. U cant tell what the story is becuase u dont have scripted scenes telling u whats going on. basically its like 20% complete Hl2. Fun to play with the physics gun mind ;)

I stuffed up the start of the story for me, how ppl come into the game and stuff, from that :( So don't look lol
 
the beta isnt even a beta its a build meaning they stole it and its not a officail beta. its missing story and plot('thank god') really all the maps are kinda incomplete and its not worth playing unless your just making maps or playing multiplayer(which also sucks becasue models are ****ed so are client to client actions(such as weapon models, weapon actions, shooting, and moving in general.).

The Beta Is Little Pieces Of The Game That Were Compiled Into A Playable Version And Contain Major Spoilers And Will Ruin The Game For You, This Is Why I Didn't Play The Beta And Yeah Capitalization.
 
You could make the enemies have AI if you double clicked the map in the folder (instead of loading it in hl2).

Like the others said, it was very incomplete with many errors, missing textures, missing transitions, etc. It was, however, fairly cool to see how a game in the making looks. i.e. floating comments ("Add water to slope for slippery effects"), signs of what the player should be doing, etc.

There was also A LOT of dialogue in the sound folder.
 
theres hardly any spoilers at all. how u meet one character..thats about it.
 
You were more likely to be spoiled by digging through the models and sound files.

There was also some sequences...they were in the E3 videos, but they were much longer and extended for several minutes.

uh, its bascially all the main characters that i stuffed up for me :( and parts that would of been "oh no, whats gonna happen to me!" if i didnt play it hehe. But ah well, my fault. Was expecting something like that was going to happen, but i was just impatient :p

I'll live with it though.
 
The beta is actually prettey neat to mess around in and it did have plot and spoilers on alot of the levels but the olney time it really ruins the game is if you dig in the audio files. you no the flying thing from the 2003 e3 vidios i got one of those to have a real fight with me. oh and i got a BLANK CANT SAY to attack me :) its reeally fun to mess arond with manipulater. and the e3 techdemo levels are the bomb
 
why are you posting in this thread if you are so....so....um....non-betaish
 
There were about zero spoilers in it despite what some say just how you meet someone thats all and it wasn't even a big spoiler. It was very fun physics tool but thats about it.
 
There is, but he doesn't quite understand the concept of "spoilers"
 
I think it's a breath of fresh air to able to talk about it. I remember when just talking about it would get the thread closed and you could get banned. Good to see that the mods pulled thier heads our of thier collective asses.

Anyway, I really wanted to play the stolen build, but then I was afraid that it might ruin something for me. Now I wish I had... oh well.

Some versions of the stolen build had included loads of sound files that ruined quite a bit of the story.
 
seems a lot of people here experimented with the beta.... not saying i didn't. but there weren't really any spoilers, save for the sound files, but if you didn't listen to those, except the music ones, it was fine, and the music ones, well, i heard they were good ;)
 
Early this year i kept hearing these reports on faked AI, and other things from people who had played one map and made there conclusions about the entire games future, so i decided to download it and test a few things out, the game was in a very early state of production, the maps (with a few exceptions) were mainly rough sketches of how things would come to look, the finished maps were designed for E3 to demonstrate what valve was making, so some things were indeed scripted.

However, Looking at the process of building maps and the unfinished work, the features they promised were possible (just not fitted together yet) it put my mind at rest about alot of things, as well as inspire me to take up HL1 mapping and some other things to take up once the final game was released, E3 2004 was great because you could clearly see the huge ammount of work done since that dark build.
 
it took way too long to load. people who didnt try it are narrow-minded.
 
yeah, the beta definitely made me even more excited about the game, it just looked so full of possibility, even in the early state, and the physics technology is frigging impressive, especially seeing it work in real time

The people that didn't try it, aren't into the whole "warez" scene. Sorry, narrow-minded has nothing to do with doing illegal things. :rolleyes:

In Sweden "WAREZ" is not illegal... only to "share" it, but not illegal to dl it :p

But i never did anyway... :thumbs:
 
The stolen build does have A LOT of spoilers, not just in the sound files.

For example, we see Breen, and Mossman, and a bunch of other things.
(All before they were introduced at E3 2004.)

The build is just a bunch of mostly incomplete levels, the E3 levels, a fair amount of weapons, a fair amount of sounds, and lot of textures.
It does crash alot, mostly involving physics.

I'm not into warez either. Everything I own is 100% legal (no i don't have the beta anymore). I think the leak was pretty good for VALVe in some ways since alot of people did get ahold of it and was impressed with what they saw (like the physics). Me and afew others spent ages playing with one of the tech demos (the barrels with those spike things comming out of the wall and the water directly underneath it).

I definatly don't like warez.....if everyone done it the business would die....why would i support that.

I was just curious about it. That's it.

And also don't wish to experience it until the retail version is in our hands.
 
There was one spoiler that made me really regret dling it...


I'm only going to say that I found out where a certain place was...
