The game could go gold in mid November and still make a holiday release. Unless your holidays occur in the beginning of December (I don't know when Hannukah or Ramadan or Festivus are this year).

Well if it is 'up to RC 5' as we have read elsewhere through an unknown source then it could go gold after the next few days. Possibly by the end of the week. This would leave sufficient time for a release in November

Even if Valve weren't contract bound to release HL2 over Steam at the same time as it hits store shelves, the gold announcement would have nothing to do with releasing over Steam.

The game going gold basically means it was approved by Vivendi. If there was going to be an early Steam release, they wouldn't give a flying **** about Vivendi's approval.

I dont know about you guys but im feeling so pessimistic these days, to be honest I wouldn't be suprised if VU hold it back until Xmas. Im still hoping for a Nov release, but I keep thinking the same thing every month and it keeps on pasing by. If we dont see it in november I dont think I'll respect Valve as much as I used to. Its a hard thing to say, but im just totally tired of waiting for this game, and after hearing of the game's length being almost half of the original, and no deathmatch im wondering wether the wait was even worth the wait

Its not necessarily the length of a game that determines its quality. I'd rather have a brilliant 10 hour long game than a horrible 50 hour one.

Besides, I doubt the reviewers were given a very long time to play the game. For all we know they were rushed through by Valve! :O

HL was a quality 30-odd hour game, despite the last few zen levels, I just naturally expected valve would try to match or outdo themselves there. dont get me wrong though, I might love it just as much, as you say, but Im just feeling quite pessimistic about the whole thing at this point in time

I dont see why you people even care when its released its nothing new just another fps with graphics that are nothing that hasnt been seen already,and physics that alow you to bump around barrels and such wow....nothing revolutionary. I really dont care when its released there really isnt anything to be excited about,no mp other than lame cs psssh .

Not so. Their next court date is in March 2005 so by your reasoning there is no chance for the game to come out till mid next year. Also, the game is not done because it's not gold yet. They don't have to settle their dispute for the game to go gold. Anyone remember the release of CZ. It took like a month and a half from the time it went gold to the time it hit stores.

As I sometimes have to do, I'm making this bold and big so you pay attention.

Retail stores in the US take their final holiday orders for new titles something like a week before thanksgiving. Therefore the game has to go gold at the very latest at the start of November, to give enough time for manufacture, distribution and delivery for the store's pre-thanksgiving orders. The next possible date for releasing a game is in the new year. Half-Life 2 has to go gold in the next 2 weeks or so to come out in 2004
