This would not exactly be a spoiler per se, since this photograph is availible at the very start of the game. The photograph is seen on the wall in Dr. Kleiner's Lab. In it is depicted what we can assume to be the scientists who were working on the Teleportation Experiment.
What is bothering me, however, is one man in particular. Of the nine people in the picture, five can be identified with a great deal of certainty. Three of the other four may be excused as being generic, but it is the last who stands next to Dr. Freeman that I most concerned about. I'm hoping the upload file feature works well ofr this site. I have numbered them to make this easier.
1 - Unkown #1. There is a possibility this might be Dr. Rosenberg who is featured in Blue Shift, however, there is the problem that, as of yet, Blue Shift has not been fully endorsed by Valve as official Half-Life Cannon. This is due largely in part that it never has Barney interact with Gordon, while HL2 suggests they did.
2 - Eli Vance
3 - Unkown #2. Female. Not sure if this was Alyx's mother, but I don't think so. If I remeber the photo in Eli's lab she was much prettier and skinnier. If anything they added a generic female scientist for some sort of balance.
4 - The "Einstein" model, one of the four generic scientist models used in the original Half-Life.
5 - An assumption I admit, but I would say Dr. Breen. Who else would Kleiner scratch out?
6 - Unkown #3. Male.
7 - Dr. Kleiner. He can be connected to the generic scientist model of "Walter" in HL1.
8 - The Man. The Legend. The Pimp. Gordon Freeman.
9 - The Mystery Man. Have you noticed anything yet? Maybe it's just me. Here are two theories I have:
A) The last generic scientist model. There were 4 in HL1, 3 are used. One is Eli, one is Kleiner, the last is "Ein." The fourth scientist in HL1 was the youngest looking one, though older than Freeman.
B) The GMan himself. I personally doubt it, but I want to know what others think. When I look at that picture, I'm reminded of him : http://www.vossey.com/half-life2/perso/gman.gif
The problem of course is that the 4th generic scientist in HL1 and the GMan do look alike in HL1. Perhaps they reused the texture for the Gman or vice versa. Still, the man in the picture does look like the Gman to me for some reason.
But then, I have my doubts. Could it be the GMan watching Freeman? He is standing next to him? But that doesn't seem to be his style. But then, perhaps, this was the GMan before he becomes "the GMan." Perhaps this is how he has his "abilities;" he was a scientist who worked on the project himself. When you exist outside of time and space (if you interpret his role that way), would it matter WHEN you gained that ability? But then, what about his "eployers"?
I'd like to write more on this but I'm tired. I'm interested in seeing what others have to say about it as well.
So, #9 the Gman or the Generic Sci #4? And if it is the GMan, what would that mean for the plot of HL?
