Bethesda Softworks' Elder Scrolls web site has been updated with a mysterious and tantalizing splash page. Decorated with a large runic "O," the phrase "When the dragon dies, the empire dies," as well as what looks to be a countdown (currently at "eight"), it looks as if the developer is gearing up for a big title announcement.

While we don't know for sure, we wonder along with you if this might be a full sequel to the much-acclaimed Morrowind. Could the "O" stand for "Oblivion"? Will all be revealed in eight days? We'll just have to wait to see.

The Elder Scrolls website

i hope its right :D
i cant wait to see it !

Eight days! Now i'm all excited. :(

It certainly sounds like a new Elder scrolls game though, the way they refer to the "empire" makes it seem like it can't really be anything else.

I hope so, I never had the motivation to get into Elder Scrolls, I hope this one catches me.

If they're true to form, Oblivion will be darker and smaller. The next one after that is thought to be the big one, as in the whole Tamriel Isle's. Oblivion IIRC is supposedly just a smaller part of it. Gonna be good all the same.

There goes all those cool mods in MW then, time to start making new ones :D

the only news i've heard about Bethesda's next project is that they've taken over the reigns of Fallout 3, and they'll be rehashing it completely.

Yup they confirmed at the time they were working on TES4 and Fallout 3

What do you think they will add ?
I WANT HORSES !!...or something like it

I'm guessing this is from some leaked info? If you don't mind, could you tell me more of what you know about it in detail?

thanks

Reading all the info they've given out over the years. Oblivion was originally hinted at before even Morrowind was anywhere near completed. That one turned up first.

What info do you know about Oblivion? I never played any of the other The Elder Scroll games besides Morrowind. The series has me intrigued to say the least.

I've downloaded Arena, but I haven't played it yet.

Its right there on the TES forums. You have to hunt for it but they've let slip the odd snippet over the years. It usually gets brought up every two weeks from a new user asking about it. Since the splash page I imagine someone has pooled all the info together that they know of.

Playing Daggerfall gives a couple of clues, as does Arena I think.. The guy responsible for it all is really big on deep storylines

the text on the splash page give a hint too

As does the underdark and the king of worms, aswell as those two being something a lot of fans wanted to see again. He's quite popular.

Ive only played morrowind, and how much detail into the world that was placed into that game is insane.(I mean hell i can pick up pieces of paper ^_^)
I hope Elder Scrolls 4 is just as good.

Hmm, they should make a huge project and work on the whole world of vvardenfall.
That would take a very long time if your going into the same detail as morrowind.

Hopefully the economic system will be better..
hmm did anyone happen to play threw morrowind.. id like to know what happens if u infact play the main quest...

I so can't wait...what if they use the Source engine? :p Hey, a lot of members agree it would be a good engine and I sent an email to Bethesda (and got a reply) so...I can dream.

I don't want to go into detail of what I'd like in TESIV, I already posted in the forums.

Once you've done all the quests, you just can keep playing and doing your own thing, there's no real end to it, throw in all the great mods and it'll go on forever.

I don't think Source would be a good idea atall. Part of the great thing about MW was its accessability, being able to edit pretty much anything, you do that in source and you've lost a great deal of modding abilities right there. Source would be a terrible engine for it.

Why source?
By far the best thing they can do is to keep the old ES3 engine and update/overhaul it... Its still one of the best engines around in terms of creating detail, actually its looking better than ever with all the texture packs and new character bodies/heads and such (which ES4 would have by default if the developers are smart). With DX9 features such as instancing, we could for example see true forrests without much speed change.

Completely replacing the engine would be a great loss, probably adding 1-2 years to development.

Edit: Quick read on the forums shows they are making their own engine, bleh... Well hopefully its good :)

Agreed, the MW engine was/is great, very powerful and easy to use. I would have missed being able to screw around with the environment if it had been in something like source.

I had heard they wanted to stick with the same engine, or atleast upgrade it to a newer version. First I've heard of them writing their own.. Course by doing that, it means there's a possibility of them licencing it out to other developers. And eventually releasing it as open source, like id did.. Now that would be VERY cool indeed, just think, an open source and very powerful engine that in five or six years time would run perfectly on PC's, even with tons of detail in ... mmmmmmm I want it :D

Yeah, licensing would be a big pro... They cant do that with the ES3 engine since its is licensed in the first place (I cant remember which engine it is right now, beleive Freedom Force used the same). Maybe they bumped into trouble there.

It's getting tense :)

Dawdler, i think it was the netimmerse engine, has a different name now though. Newest version is pretty powerful though, lot of the bugs and problems Morrowind had don't exist in the new one

Yeah, that's the name... I just hope it has good shader support and finally some occlusion culling, something Morrowind suffered badly from... It wasnt really fun when all you had to do was to look at a 10 poly wall to know there is a 20,000 poly room behind.

Two "rumors" I've heard

One here says they are writing their own engine. The other I heard from sources closer to the coders is they dont want to lose things like the CS and the resources. So would want to continue with the same engine, which would in most cases mean upgrading the licence to the newest version. Which fixes the occlusion culling problem. Baring that in mind, and the fact that really was Morrowind's only weakness (there being no other "real" limits imposed by the engine itself) Then WOW can you imagine the things they could do then?? :):):):)

Nice find Epyon :D:D

Now where are those people who thought I was making things up lol

lol sad but probably true :D

Though they have been busy the past few years, chances are its very close to being released. Oblivion is said to be much smaller, so there's a good chance of it coming soon.

Now if I can get an idea of the release date, that would be awesome.
How long did Morrowind take.. If they started Oblivion in 2002. The background and details were likely laid out prior to that. Depending on the engine its likely they are coming up to the end by now.

I just hope they dont make it bigger. it may sound stupid, but morrowind was too big. i was overwhelmed!!! after a few hours play i always break down and never play it again. TOO MUCH TO DO!

i might play it more when the WOW beta is over (please god, extend it for a year...)

I would love it to have been bigger. At first morrowind was almost too much to handle in terms of size, but actually after playing it for so long, I just wish there was more. Something about 4 times the size would be cool and anything bigger would be amazing. I doubt that it will be so big though.

Heh you guys should play Daggerfall if you thought Morrowind was big :p

Morrowind is actually really really small, just so well made that it feels far bigger. Goes to show what a great dev team they have.

I don't think Oblivion will be too big though. I think the "big one" is yet to come. Once computers can handle it, they don't seem the kind of company to churn anything out for the sake of it. So will probably be a few years yet before the big TES turns up which I imagine will dwarf Daggerfall and keep people busy for years.. I love games like that, no end to them and plenty to do, can't beat it :D

If that really is in-game on the magazine cover, it looks pretty damn good. I liked the original morrowind (for a while at least, long enough to waste money on both expansions), but my wishlist for this one would be:

1. Proper dialogue trees
2. Non-shitty combat
3. Proper dialogue trees
4. Proper dialogue trees
5. Proper dialogue trees

Did I mention I'd love proper dialogue trees instead of that hyperlink encyclopedia system?

tbh the dialogue could use a makeover. It was good, but it confusing the further you got knowing what to ask.. Maybe some option to minimize commonly asked questions or something.. I dunno, definately different would be nice :)

The combat wasn't that bad once you installed Combat Advanced (I think it was called) and Morrowind Enhanced. Made things more interesting.

I saw movies of that, looked pretty good. But if a mod can do it for MW, bethsoft can/should do it properly right from the start for Oblivion, which is why it is on my wishlist.

true yeah.. I reckon they will, a lot have complained about it. Though if not, and providing they are using a decent engine that allows for that level of modding, someone else (same guy probably) is bound to fix things.
