I'm sure everyone has a few of these stories: a game area or level, or possibly an achievement, that you pursued doggedly for a long time before simply packing it in.

Though I haven't given up on them yet, my three current candidates are:

1. COD4 -- Mile High Club on Veteran
2. SC4 -- the accursed Floors 57-59 of the Tower of Lost Souls
3. GTA4 -- Pigeon achievement

Challenges I have truly given up on are:

1. America's Army -- Spec. Forces Stealth training lvl
2. GTA 3 --ambulance mission completion
3. LOTR ROTK -- The Palantir of Sauron

And countless games from the 8 bit generation...

Could never get past the last boss in the original Half-life. Have always wondered what the ending looks like.

The "Brass Balls" achievement in Bioshock. Screw it.

Nilly was a tough one, all right. I wonder how many people gave up on him.

It seems like a lot of te big shooters from the 90s had trick bosses: HL, ROTT and the original Quake, not to mention the Icon of Sin in Doom 2--I never did manage to kill that bastard.

I know it sounds stupid, but the first level when you're mean to really use your power in Under the Knife. No matter what I do those pollip things always bloody burst. I've got an A-rank on all the previous levels.

I never actually got to finish Thief 3. :( One of the best games ever, and yet unfinished...

I'm stuck halfway through ''No Fighting in the War Room' on veteran in COD 4

The 'protect white forest defence buildings' achievement. I've always had at least 1 building getting destroyed in Ep2

Conquering every territory in Medieval 2: Total War.

Passing the DragonForce song on GH3 every time...I still mostly fail at the start.

FOORRGETTT IT!!

Tap it with your strumming hand on green and your fretting hand on red-yellow-blue-orange.

Nice thread title.

There was a challenge level in portal which i gave up on and haven't been buggered to go back to it

Yea, alot of the challenges in Portal were gay.. I mean, the limited steps ones were outrageous.. It counts as a step when I land on the ground..

I DIDN'T STEP YOU GOD DAMN GAME I WENT THROUGH A ****ING WORMHOLE FFS.

Also System Shock 2...

My secret shame - I beat the game all the way through to SHODAN on Impossible, but I couldn't beat her, so I changed it to easy just for the last fight with her D:

The mile high club is not that hard if you watch the walkthrough on Youtube. I thought I would never get it, but once I watched the video I completed it in 4 tries.

Any traveling quest in any MMO, SWG has a lot of them

TRAVEL TO JABBA'S PALACE, IT'S ONLY 4000 METERS AWAY HAVE FUN LAWL

Turok: Rage Wars for the N64. I almost had all the medals, however I bought a faulty game that didn't let me complete the two-player assault tourney, so I couldn't get the last medal!

FireLeo - Viewtiful Joe

I remember giving up on this for a month, coming back and beating it with ease only to fail at that fat **** at the end. **** him.

All the sidequest shit in Assasins Creed. I started doing all of it at first, until I realized that I could just kill everyone and it would be ten times easier then sneaking in.

The 'protect white forest defence buildings' achievement. I've always had at least 1 building getting destroyed in Ep2

The stupid thing about the more difficult Orange Box achievements is that, because of the point breakdown, you are never sufficiently rewarded for them. I mean, what does the gnome get you? 30 lousy points?

The "Brass Balls" achievement in Bioshock. Screw it.

Really? I havent found it too difficult and I'm far from quitting it.

Any gathering acheivements (Assassins Creed, GTA 4, Crackdown, Burnout Paradise) I loathe.

I stopped playing Team Fortress 2, because I really suck at it.

Getting 100% in every GTA game. Missing one hidden package and one stunt bonus is just so annoying.
Getting rank 100 in Psychonauts (this is because the computer with Psychonauts on it doesn't have a monitor plugged into it at the moment).

I feel your pain. At least these days, the game tells you when you have already completed a given stunt jump. I used to lose track of which ones I had done.

The packages are as much a hellish ordeal now as ever, though.

Getting 100% in GTA4. I only needed to get the pigeons and a few more unique stunt jumps but I gave up.

not game challenges but games that I bought but never managed to finish:

Bandits: phoenix rising- just a crappy game that I got halfway thru and then I got distracted by some better game.

Operation Flashpoint- think I got to the point where you get to be tank commander and I just gave up because the control layout was too frustrating.

Home world- got halfway thru I think, without much of a problem, then you had to fight the 3rd race and I just gave up as the difficulty ramped up. it's a common thing with strategy games for me, I blaze thru most of the game without much trouble until I hit a dead end.

Ground control II- same as with home world, got to the 3rd. or 4th mission with the alien race, then your supposed to prevent some barrels from getting blown up, but you start with barely any forces and the ones you have is scattered way to much to effectively deal with the enemy forces who advances an mass right from the beginning, even having the mother-ship hang around for extra fire power won't work. in the end I just gave up.

Guild wars: prophecy- got to those vulcanic isles with my ranger/monk and then gave up/got distracted by another game. got tired of shitty pickup groups...and now I haven't kept up with all the game/skill changes so it's just really daunting getting back into the game, not to mention I have to download a ton of stuff every time I enter a new area. but I thinking I will probably return to it and finish it some day.

Port Royal 2- never really got very far in this game, it's really difficult, and I hate the unfair way sea battles are fought. in the end it got deleted of the hard-disk because I needed the space for something better. I will probably return to it at some point as it's a pretty relaxing game to play.

oh I forgot...

The witcher: my computer is too crap to run the game, got a boss battle but it's impossible to defeat him because of frame-rate issues, the game is optimized like ass, I definitly return to this game once I upgrade my computer though.

The Cradle from Thief 3 =[

Load up on flash grenades or holy water and kill all the zombies. Makes the level much easier as well as a tad less scary. Then read a walkthrough and go on easy. :)

The Hero of Tatooine quest in SWG, ****ing stupid that I get a level 40 quest at 22
