The start of HL2

i dont know if this has been a topic already but here goes...

what do you think the start of hl2 will be like? the same a hl1 where there is a 3 hour monorail ride you have to sit through before you can start blasting?

something like you on a train going threw the country side, trees, lakes etc giving valve a chance to show off all the pretty things they can do, untill you arive in the city 17 train station...

anyone got any other ideas?

I don't know what they have planned for the start, but if it is something like HL1 with the long ride I'll be happy, was one of my fondest memories the first time I ran the game to see all that. I only wish they'd included a skip button for later games when you don't fancy sitting through it again and dont happen to have the console running to skip to the game proper. So if its something like that again as you suggest, with country side, tree's and lakes and so on I'd like there to be a skip button, or an option in the program to not run it in future.

I doubt it will be a quiet ride, because Valve stated you'll begin the game totally confused and in a heated battle. We'll see.

Oh, yeah. It'd be like In Enemy at the Gates when the soldiers are coming into stalingrad at the beginning and you can see loads of war going on and thigns blowing up, and the city 17 skyline is on fire....

Hypothetical Intro 1: You start off in halucination, the Gman's face swimming in front of yours, he gives a little speech. You hear gunshots and explosions, muffled and echoing, until suddenly they get really loud and you wake up in the water. Loads of aliens/combine/whatever are attacking a rebel boat...

Hypothetical Intro 2: You start off in halucination, the Gman's face swimming in front of yours, he gives a little speech. You're on a plane, flying over city 17. Suddenly it gets hit and goes down...

Hypothetical Intro 3: You are sent into city 17 and everything is fine...and then you're in a plaza when A huge gash appears in the sky, spewing green flmae and aliens start appearing everywhere...

You're in a big ware house filled with rebels and lab equipment, Alyx shows you round when lab equipment starts exploding everywhere...and a strider comes through the wall. Game on.

Maybe its like the Philadelphia Experiment. maybe your on a battleship, and it mysteriously teleports a mile high from city 17, and plummets, and destroys one onf those striders. or the strider decides to play ping pong with the battleships, and the game ends. top banana

That was trying to avoid file cliches' by the way. of course the train through the countryside is still a possibility, or maybe a plane flight. the game might suggest that america has been overrun by the xen creatures, and the combine. the game could start off with gordon and his colleagues, and a butch of refugees escaping from the remnants of one of the few major cities left standing. an intense introduction at an airport might be a possibility.

Something that starts off like one of the MODS that i have seen when the original was released. It might be that the Gman is not really who he says he is. If you think about it Gman can be short for
G=Gordon
man=freeMAN

If you put these together, it makes the name Gordon Freeman (Many people believe this actually Government Man. Coincidence? Maybe hes come back from the future to prevent the catastrophe, yet he wasn't able to overt it from happening.

i think u will start in the tram going thru c17 (like in the strider video)
and then boom booom bam! explosions u see a strider in the distance the tram flips over ......u open up the emergency glass and get the crowbar(weeee) crack out of the windows run for your life....meet up with some friends and go to kleiners lab

Erm, if thats the case, then the Dock movie is either there to show of the great physics engine, or the dock might start later on in the game (similar to the trash compactor half way in the original game, you get the crowbar there as well).

Erm, i wonder if you get captured by the combine half way through the game, like in the original. It might explain the Barricade movie (They came to rescue you). at the moment, there are many possibilities for the beginning of the game.

I'm betting the portal you enter in the end of HL1 will lead right into HL2. Considering you're still wearing your old hazard suit, i think it'll just be like a time warp to a different time and place. That's just the feeling i've gotten reading all the interviews and stuff about how it starts. And i think one interview said that you start off exactly where HL1 ended, and since there are no cut scenes, or times that are skipped through, it makes sense that the portal transports you straight to City 17.

A G-Man has two meanings. The first meaning denotates an individual who works for a government agency. The second refers to a Gangster from the era of prohibition. So either G-Man is a fed, or he's packing a Thompson in his violin case he carries.

here's what i've always seen as the start of halflife 2 right when you start there's no intro just a fade in thingy and you just start and there's a whole lot of fighting and what not and you get a pistol and your trusty crowbar from the ground and you just go and try to stay alive the first five minutes so you can get some ground and collect your thoughts

Then a loud crash storms through the air. You, Gordon Freeman, wake up in small apartment. You walk to the window to see that big monstrosity that seems to be eating the town.

Then you hear the crack of a door being kicked in. You got to the door and slowly open it to see combine soldiers laying fire down on to people in an adjacent apartment. You close the door and grab the crowbar on the floor.

Your story begins now...(now you take control)

I know how it'll all be and you can trust me on this (I am smart):

HL2 takes place several years after HL. All that time, Gordon has been working for the G-man, cleaning his carpets, washing his poodle... living a violence-free life. Far away from the horrors that happened to the ordinary people (alien invasion and stuff). He even found himself a wife, would you believe that ? Our Gordon, a family man ! Makes me feel all warm inside. We can't say he didn't deserve a loving woman after doing everything he did back in Black Mesa. The poor fella.
Anyway, everything was fine and dandy 'till one day... when the Xen dudes made a little boo-boo: one of their scientist (a more geeky headcrab) accidentally opened an interdimensional (and galactical) space portal to another dimension. Guess what ? Some damn alien race decides this is a great opportunity to have some fun and starts pouring it's slimy army through the mysterious cosmic hole. Sux, don't it ?
So peace goes down the drain, and the G-man politely asks Gordon to help him along with the cleanup. Well, what can you do ? Sometimes you just can help saying that life is a b*tch. So Gordon says "Life is a b*tch" and with these historic words our game begins:

You have to consider this

If there are multiple universes (thats why Xen appears) the Gman might come from a totally different alternative universe. If Gman is Gordon from a different universe, it would not effect Gman if he killed Gordon from a different universe, because he is not effecting the time line.

Gordy opens his tired little eyes and starts walking towards the bathroom. Suddenly a BOOM turns everything black and our hero falls down and faints.

Level 2

Gordy opens his tired little eyes and starts walking towards the G-man.
- Gord, I, I’m sorry… you wife, she’s…
- NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
- Ah, don’t worry ! As soon as I’ll fetch you a crowbar and your old tough guy suit, you’ll be ready to teach those zombie mischiefs a lesson in Gordyness, now won’t you ?
- Oh… really ?
- But of course, my handsome friend.
- Allright, baby ! Let me at ‘em ! Let me at ‘em !

Level 3

Gordy opens his tired little eyes and puts on his old tough guy suit. Than he grabs his crowbar and runs out of the east-european building, right into the arms of the green slimy dudes who were patrolling the area.

Level 4

Gordy opens his tired little eyes and realizes he’s inside the alien bunker prison thing. Not good – he thinks to himself – I wish there were some rebel guys or anything like that to save me cause I’m real helpless now, Lord ! And God’s heart gets all warm. So the rebel persons come out of nowhere and rescue our maiden in distress. (great level, huh ?)

Level 5

Gordy opens his… of, whatever. The thing is that he meets up with a friend and his delicious daughter, and they fall madly in love. The game ends with a huge scene of the wedding.

I reckon this situation stretches beyond Xen. There might be multiple Universes at work, heres my theory:

Earth= Bog standard Earth, with your countrys, dictators, and freedom fighters (ironic)

Xen= After defeating their mind controlling dictator, Vortigons (Alien Slaves) and there larger cousins the Alien Grunts are free, and decide to create a inter-dimensional treaty with Earth (Headcrabs, Bullsquids, and Barnicles are uneffected because they are minor creatures such as are scorpians and snakes). Xen population have found asylum on Earth from the evil combine.

Race Combine?= An inter dimensional invader. They have just recently invaded Xen, and have now found the inter- dimensional rift to Earth. Using there advanced nano technology, they teleport a small orb (the size of a fist) that starts to eat City 1 and grows into a command post. 16 cities have now gone under their control (including Moscow, Brussels, Tokyo, Mexico City, London, Paris, Washington, Rome, Athens, etc) and are now working on city17 (I reckon it closly resembles Bucharest in Romania, close to the Black Sea). They are using minor creatures from Xen to attack Earth population.

I can really picture that actually... I vaguely remember Gabe (or a significant other)alluding to flashback-style scenes in the game. Perhaps you relive the closing moments of the first game as the credits roll- but all rendered in magnificent Source graphics. The dimension-spanning tram, the G-man's murmur of "time to choose... ...it's time to choose"... Man, it could be cool.

I wouldn't mind a linear intro scene like in HL1, actually... I found the first incredible. Hell, the entire game is likely to be a linear masterpiece of sorts- so I won't complain

I think that it will start with gordon reliving a moment from HL1 in a dream. That seems very likely because of gabe saying that you will be very confused in the begining and he hinted about a flashback scene from the first HL, but who knows it could be anything.

Gordon is trying to defend a fellow scientist while he opens a portal to Xen. The Barney is already dead and alien controllers are closing in. It's the end of Lambda Core, Hl1. Gordon is seeing the world in black and white, blurry around the edges, his vision swirling and twisting. He feels like he is running in treacle. One of the controllers grows bigger and morphs into the face of the Gman.
"Welcome back, Mr Freeman. We've been very busy in your absence..."
Gordon opens his eyes to see the Gman's face. Then there is a flash of light.
When his vision clears he is hovering in space, again seeing in black and white dream-o-flashback-o-vision. A tram rumbles past and through the window he can see...himself. He floats alongside the moving tram and sees with horror that the Gordon in the tram is surrounded by spectral aliens, floating heads and strange visions. The tram Gordon seems oblivious as he watches a Barney with no head banging on a door go past.
Gordon, floating oustide, screams and screams to alert himself, but the tram Gordon does not seem to hear.
There is a flash of green light and once more Gordon can hear the voice of the Gman.
"I'd like you to meet some survivors of you own personal exodus..."
Gordon finds himself in blackness. But ahead of him there is a tiny puddle of light in the infinite dark. Inside it, he sees himself pushing a trolley, running on the spot. On the verges of the light, strange and terrible creatures swarm to the light like moths to a flame, buzzing and chittering all around it. The other Gordon pushes the trolley into a big generator of some sort, and the creatures start to scream exitedly. There is another falsh of green light...
"Listen carefully, Mr Freeman, I will only say this once..."
And so on.

You guys remember that in many of the screens we see that the sea level has sunk or the sea is totally gone, yet in some screens and the first vid we saw (the one on the docks) the sea level is normal... so could the game start with some kind of event that lowers the sea level tremendosuly?
