They Hunger: Lost Souls

I remember playing the originals while the whole family watched Malcom in the Middle. My littlest brother came over to watch me, and my mom was like "Don't let Timmy see that gore" and my dad was like "C'mon, it's just a game shut up and watch TV" and I was like "Mom you got pwn'd by dad lol u n00b" and Timmy was like "Watch out! Zombies!" and Malcom's little brother was like "Look at me I'm getting kidnapped by carnies". Such good times.

Still haven't played They Hunger... :(
It's a gap in my HL experience :(

Malcolm in the middle rocks :p

I'm looking forward to this episode, I'm sure that those textures etc are just placeholders.

Can I hear a 'Hell yeah!?!' from the auidence please? This will certinally be a game, regardless of quality, that I would buy. Always good to see a top-notch developer go commerical.

I've got to say this is one case where I think hyperbole might actually be justified. If it's anywhere near as good as the original, I would pay money for it.

well good luck to them. sad shame though that theres a severe lack of quality sp content and mods for hl2, and this going retail will kinda suck.

but now that valve unlocked hl for me, i must try this they hunger. i assume they hunger was never a free mod, from the story it doesn't look free, it just looks like pcgamer bought it for everyone by commissioning it.

anyways, congrats, looks just like hl2, doesn't appear graphically any better then any other good hl2 mod, but its all about gameplay

Legally can they actually make use of the HL2 models, textures ect? Even if they licensed the engine usually that wont include anything else other than sdk's ect, but using all that content from HL2 and then selling it???

So what? CS uses many HL2 models, textures, etc. DoD also does. And we all paid for both.

It probably depends on the license deal they got. The first old news from Neil's site says "Valve has been in contact with us and they support the idea of TH:S. This was an important first step towards making this a viable project." I suppose that clarifies it right?

Anyway some of those models are obviously placeholders. That's what "unfinished game" means. :naughty:

I so hope you get to drive a train again. That was so damn cool in TH.

Man, the memories are all flooding back. :D

edit: OH MY GOD AND WITH THE INSANE POLICE SHERIFF PLAYING ZOMBIE HITLER AND THE MILITARY PARACHUTING IN AND THE COWS, OH MY GOD THE COWS, AND THE MILITARY THINK YOU AND THEY SHOOT YOU WITH HELICOPTERS AND THE CAR DRIVING BIT THROUGH THE BURNING CITY AND OH MY GOD THE MENTAL HOSPITAL NOOOOOO AND THE NURSES AND THE OH GAWD!

All the modders are taking advantage of steam so they can make money. I guess they diserve some cash if they make a good mod though.

USS Darkstar was what made me go buy Half-Life. And They Hunger, I couldn't play alone because I was too scared. I'm excited for this. : )

looks really nice but I'm really tired of the horror genre. I was really hoping for more tactical squad based games on source but so far most of the games on source are either horror or fantasy. Kudos to the developers for taking their mod to retail but I'm a little tired of the genre and will probably pass

and you know why? just because they hunger INVENTED the horror genre and about every mod now tries to clone it. just like CS invented the tactical squad based genre and a few years ago every mod tried to clone it. people never learns :p

Have you played the original They Hunger? :p

admittedly no ...yes I know I'm pre-judging based on nothing more than a few screenshots and an overall impression but it's not the game itself it's the genre ...if I see one more suffling demon/vampire/zombie I'm going to scream ..and not a girly-type-out-of-fear-scream either

Fear doesnt interest me, Quake, Prey, Vivisector, doom ..it's the genre ..it's likehow some people have ww2 burnout I have Horror burnout

Doesn't look like a full blown game though... it looks like a mod :p It's got all the HL2 textures, models, etc. Honestly, to have to pay for it, even $10, is too much.
he speaks the truth.

Well, They Hunger was really, really good. :D

give me the gist of it ..oh and is it based on the David Bowie movie "the Hunger" ..vampires?

oh but those are pure action "shoot everything in sight" games, which is quite different from they hunger style, you would not say it's the same genre if you really had played it :stare:

who says I like "shoot everything in sight" type games?

but thats what i mean, they hunger is NOT a "shoot everything in sight" game, unlike the other games you mentioned and are sick of :E

*stands up and claps*

GREAT news!

I'd pay for this. My guess is, it won't sell for more than $12.. just like RDKF.

The amount of work these guys have to put into these SP mods (look at neil, he has a wife and kids) is immense. Probably more than your average 9-5 workday.

To compensate Neil for his work is something I do not have a problem with.

Damnit, so you don't want in on the ZM playtesting? ;(

Anyways, back on topic. They Hunger is an absolute castle of awesome. Anyone who claims they're a fan of the HL modding scene that hasn't played it should be shot.

hey how about someone post a direct link to the download of the mod. im really busy at work and don't have time to look, but would love to take it home and play it tonight.

searching ....

edit: cant find any info on the mod :(

Good luck searching, because I still haven't officially announced Conquest :p

And we haven't been playing ZM much recently, due to a few bugs that we're trying to fix. But we'll give you a call beforehand the next time we play. Probably because we need a fast computer to host, and you fit that description.

And They Hunger. Inspiring, how well it was made. They Hunger is to blame for the gurrent glut in horror themed mods :p

not sure, it used to be available at fileplanet but the link is broken now. anyway if you didn't play they hunger when it was originally released, you probably better wait for this new version instead, because the old HL1 engine is too dated now: 7 years old! at least i tried to play again the original HL1 recently and it wasn't nearly as fun as the first time. well your mileage may vary.

I'm not so sure about that. I think it coincides with a wider ressurection of the theme in films and such. As far as the gameplay works, yes, but what sparks people's conceptualisation is the spate of Zombie titles. TH was a while back now.

Hey, stop deferring my finger-pointing!
Back before the HL2 release, the number of single-player HL2 Horror mods announced was through-the-roof, and I'll wager it was because of TH. Sadly, I don't think any of them have survived.

Link again, for Cpt.Stern, here.

Unfortunately it doesn't work on Steam, so you'd need a Half-Life CD to install the original version.

You were a writer sent away to a remote location by your publisher to recover (or get some inspiration or something, I can't remember). But on a winding mountain road, you crashed your car off a cliff and into a lake. Crawling from the wreckage, soaked and bedraggled, you decided to seek sanctuary at a neabry church. But strange things were afoot, and the radio was reporting wierd goings-on. It soon turned out the dead had risen to eat the flesh of the living, and you were forced to try and escape across the countryside to get help at the nearest town, starting off with only a pistol and your umbrella.

Things complicated. The cops were zombified, but shooting at you (or they thought you were a zombie. Again, I forget). The undead were everywhere. They were desplaying signs of intelligence. The local town was on fire and overrun, and worst of all, the sheriff seemed to be somehow mixed up in this - he commanded the undead legions. That was just the first episode.

They combined some of the most incredibly and imaginitive set-pieces I've ever seen - driving a frieght train headlong through the countryside, riding a helicopter while shooting at zombies, driving a police car through a burning village, escaping from a prison cell, a volcano...man, there was so much. With the second and third episodes the situation really complicated, the army arriving to take control of the situation, and things got extremely...well, let's say weird.

I mean, it was actually a zombie mod that combined amazing action and horror gameplay that I personally actually found scary and often extremely disturbing. It explored what a zombie apocalypse might actually be like, as you got to the nearest down only to find it destroyed utterly; as the situation grew from an isolated incident to a problem spread over miles and miles of countryside, to something infinitely bigger. At one point during the second episode you realise how well and truly ****ed you are and just how little hope there is of any kind of escape, rescue or redemption...well, if you're going to play it I should probably stop. :p

GIST: IT WAS FECKING AWESHENS

Actually come to think of it Ravenholm probably has a lot more to do with the current announced Zombie projects than TH.
