Third Person?

Anyone know if HL2 can be played in a third person perspective?

Note: I did a search but I think its broken and I couldnt find anything

I don't know, but Hl1 was unplayable in 3rd person...

''idealyaw 180'' made nice screenshots though...

very unlikely in my opinion. First person is much more involveing that 3rd. I think so anyway. A mod is likely to do this though, if that makes you feel beter. Well its possible at least :)

I doubt it will be. Since Half-Life 2 is a first person game, I doubt they have taken any time at all optimizing the third person view. I'm sure a cheat of some sort will allow you to see yourself from third person, but like the original Half-Life, it most likely won't be functional.

However, Valve has said (though I can't tell you where) that the Source engine is perfectly capable of running a third person game and that it should be an easy mod. Perhaps we'll even see a third person mod for single player Half-Life 2. Now there's a thought.

It would be good (and I think they mentioned something about it being included) in the driving portions of the game

you are supposed to BE gordon! why would you want to see youself from behind all the time?

wow, so many replies in 15 minutes. Anyway, I was just curious cause I like the LOOK of games in third person. Makes it more like an interactive movie

valve have stated many times that you will only see through gordons eyes, ie not third person, sorry.

3rd person... it would be impossible to aim. plus it would suck:cheese:

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of third person shooters, they look alot nicer but you don't get the same feeling out of playing them.

Not like when I play I actually convince myself I am Gordon Freeman but I prefer the feeling that you see it through his eyes.

i like them for consoles, but i just dont think its the right thing for pc's ala Matrix Reloaded for the pc. More of a console game

I personally think that the first person viewpoint is much better. Half life was so atmospheric, really making you jump when the level designer threw a well placed monster your way. And, with the new dynamic music system and updated AI in HL2, a first person perspective will be really eerie when its done well, third person just doesnt seem to have that same 'in the game' atmosphere.

I take it you've never played a good third person game like Heretic II or Max Payne.

That said, whatever one thinks of the merits of playing a game in third person, Half-Life 2 most likely will not support a robust third person option out of the box. However, I'd think that making such a mod would be very easy, but I'm not very knowledgeable about such things so I could be wrong. Still, if someone did make a quality third person mod for Half-Life 2, I'd try it.

Often it creates chaos if you make a 1st person shooter into a 3rd person shooter because when you die you'll sometimes be able to see some of your inner organs from your own eyes.
Example:
Jedi Knight 2 (Jedi Outcast):
Sometimes if you stand with your back turned to a wall seen from the 3rd person view you'll sometimes be able to see some of your inner organs like your tongue and/or your eyeballs.... eyeballs are spoooooooky!!

HL2 will be a pure 1st-person game. But a 3rd person view may be a console command for the mods.

Aye Jedi Knight2 had that problem.

I doubt there will be, either way it will probably be horrible!

Gabe has said on many occasions that he doesn't think the player should play games in 3rd person, or have the protagonist of the game talk much (at all).

That's just bad coding (especially for game devs). It would be easy to simply move the camera when dying. Try TRAOD, now THAT is spooky when getting inside her (no not like that ;))... I jumped the first time I saw it :)

I for one will try to make a third person perspective native for my mod. Reason? I think its neat to see yourself. I know it aint realistic, but it gives a movie like feel, and controll of your every movement, oh, and a feeling of awareness about your surrounding. 1st person just doesnt cut it compared to the eyes of a humans. Its just a matter of finding a nice way of doing it. I'm not that extreme at coding, not to mention very rusty, hehe, but I hope I can manage. Bet there will be a short time until a tutorial on how to make 3rd person in HL2 will come :)

third person for hl2 will jus SUCK ASS! lol

first person is what hl2 should be, and stay!

hey guys, what about that game Vampire: The Masquerade (or however that is spelled)? It's the source-engine, and if I'm not totally off here, I think that game is being run in 3rd-person.

I like both, I like to play in thirdperson to watch my character move.

3rd person is OK in some games, but HL2 will have not have under any pretenses a 3rd person mode. Valve is very proud of it, and even the few "cutscenes" they had were first-person.

Repeat after me: Turd-person view sucks in action games.

And yes, I've played Max Payne (the 1st person mod made the game a zillion times better).

the only good third person game i have played is splinter cell & max payne

Well. Not true. Halo had great 3rd person vehicular action.

Half-Life 2 really doesn't seem like it will have any 3rd person perspectives, and I believe Gabe stressed this.

How hard would it be to add a third person view for a mod? Just curious, i know no one knows for sure, but lets say it would be the same as adding third person in half life 1, and is there even a gordon model?

Well. Mods can do it if they want to.

Just wouldn't be in Half-Life 2... Also, I dunno if there's even a full model for Gordon in HL2. Maybe it's just the hand/arm floating around.

Once again, Gabe said that the player was physically simulated... Most likely, that means you have a third person model too. It would be the easiest way to interact with the enviroment (instead of having an invisible body with set limits on how you can manouver without hitting stuff). It isnt rendered of course, but I think its gonna be there... But its not a certaintenty of course.
At any rate, my mod will not use the player model, mostly just the combine, and we know they have 3rd person models :)
Concerning how easy it is, you need acceleration and speeds, spring to original position (or however one describe it) and something that will keep it from ending up inside walls (ie move it closer to the player when hitting a wall). This is baked to together to make a camera :)
Making an EASY 3rd person is simple, just make the camera be behind and above you. As you move, you move the camera in the opposite direction, with the player as the pivot point.

But I have never made a player camera, so I'm just full of it :D

Physically simulated doesn't necessarily mean he has a whole model. ;) But it would be what is assumed.

Well i'm wondering if in standard deathmatch we're going to be playing as Gordon, cuz in Spectator mode then we could actually see the model... unless they put spec mode in 1st person too...

Naw, I just meant its the easiest. Why have it so you have a limit to how far back against the wall you can move, when you can simple have a model that is physically modelled? Would be by far the easiest, and we have seen pre rendered models of both Alyx and Gordon (where Alyx look pretty much like she looks ingame), so they have the model :)

I never saw a Gordon model other than his hand. I saw Gordon concept art.. like th eone in my avatar and the one with him walking down the street...

I also never saw a Alyx model other than in-game.

I dunno, Valve just seems paranoid to show a Gordon model or something...

There's gotta be a gordon model. What happens when you see something reflective? Look down into the water? Will there be a crowbar floating in the air?

Heh.

Or maybe, Gordon has turned into some terrible creature, but it doesnt happen in the beginning. Thats why in the lab, alyx goes 'your looking at me again' I bet she's thinking 'Jesus your so fugly! dont look at me!:'(' And so thats why we havent seen any ingame versions of his whole body! lol

Ok and how can you see gordons ass?.We never even saw it???And why would you want to bring that up??????.

I originally asked this because I was planning on making a mod for fun (read: probably wont get finished). If the game allows SOME kind of 3rd person then it would speed development because I could use Gorden as placeholder art . I am a programmer so I can do the aiming system, camera, etc But I have almost no experience in 3d modelling.

I agree that hl2 will be better played in 1st person because of its faster pace, but I think slower style action/adventure games are extremely fun and imersive in 3rd person.

Good point. Never thought of that before, but now im excited that there will be a model.

Sadly, I dont have the E3 video anymore, otherwise I would check if he shows in the camera in the tech part of it, considering it spins around so much :)

There are many kinds of situations where these technologies would warrant a 3rd person model. Cameras especially. Something as simple as a mirror... Assuming there are toilets in the game, there are always mirrors in the toilets :)

Also note that there was a gordon model in HL, you could play him in multiplayer! (if I'm not totally wrong, it was quite some time ago I last played original HL multiplayer)).

Sidenote: We cant see Gordons ass. He's a skinny scientist, he doesnt have an ass.
