I'm just thinking here...but is anyone else unsettled by all this delaying of the movies? The hardest of the hard-core fanboys here (i'm one of them) are putting a lot of faith in Valve, and counting on them releasing HL2 on the 30th of September.

These movies aren't a good sign though. They have consistently not made their release dates, for reasons that could easily carry over to HL2. Steam problems, bug fixing, optimization, etc.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, I'm just saying that repeated delays coming from a company with a history of delays (i know, they switched engines, etc.) is worrying when i'm all set to take a day off on the 30th.

thoughts?

Stop bitching about it and wait, everyone has problems with releasing stuff, its not a big deal.

well jesus, i wasn't bitching. read the first four words of my post. just something to think about.

Thinking is the incorrect word, because you went and posted it.

This has been discussed alot. I don't think this in any way represents the actual release of HL2.. a full blown game has priority over some videos. They're going to be more inclined to release the actual game on time rather than what's going on now; videos of the same stuff we've seen before. I personally don't really mind, sure it would be nice to get them today or have had them in the last few days, but it's not like a demo or anything. Just let it go.

Hehe, this reminds me of the UT2003 forums waiting for the demo, lol.

At least we have guys from Valve talking to us, they were getting updates from a webcam in the offices of one of the devs :D

I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt developement of Steam is taking any resources away from Half-Life 2, and they're ironing out the problems now so it'll be ready for primetime when Half-Life 2 is released.

The difference is, Steam was never given an official release date nor were the videos. In fact, the videos were probably just a last minute "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if...?" idea rather than something that has been in the pipeline for months only to delayed at the last minute.

AS for last minute tweaks pushing Valve over the deadline, I don't think so. I have a feeling they planned in plenty of tweak time before boldy announcing their September 30th release date. I think Valve is as aware as anybody that missing the Half-Life 2 deadline would be a public relations nightmare, and Gabe Newall does have his home phone number listed on Valve's website!

who carez is HL2 isn't released on 30 september, as long as it's an OK game... i want HL2 bad aswell, but he, i want it to be good also... and be happy that they actually take such good care of theire comunity (valve that is), i don't know alot of other game developers that do this. the 1st movie will arrive before sunday (imo), that's good enough for me! ;p (hope my steams keeps working :))

Did you think that they were busier working on the game than worrying about getting some more hype inducing videos out the door?

And don't worry, there's still three months before the release of the game, I'm sure we'll be getting lots of new content in that time and the videos should be here on thursday.

good point. actually, good points all around. i take it back.

since both videos are said to be 800 mgbytes a piece, the upped resolution should make videos ALOT more emmersive. Besides, can't we wait a couple days or even a week for some videos while the game itself isn't coming out for another 80 days???

800Mb in total, actually. 800 a piece would be pretty excessive.

;(

82 days, 10 hours, and 14 minutes, if my cellphone's countdown is right :dork:

im with spiffae on this one how can they be trusted? this always happens.... **rembers cz** *shutters*

The movies will be out when their out ( frankly everyone putting such faith in steam i sbeyond me and you should expexct at least a few days dealy with everything steam realated ) and the game will be out when it's out. Software dates are the most changeable of any retail environment and you should be taking sept 30th as a guide not as canon until valve irrevocably say it will be out sept 30th.

I want the media and HL2 as bad as alomost everyone. However, I'm gonna have to wait. The reason...? I won't be able to afford a decent computer to run it, that's why.

Let's face it, my 333mhz Celeron, 386mb NV RAM and GeForce 2 MX400 equiped system won't be abe to run it. And people here are complaining just becasue of a movie not being released on time. At least you'll be able to play it when it's out... :(

the bugs they want to fix are in steam, dont you think its better they fix those now and then they wont have to deal with them when HL2 comes out?.....i thought so.

You shouldnt worry about HL2 being released on time. If you think why the videos are late, it's because they're ironing out all the steam/1.6 bugs. COUNTER-STRIKE 1.6, you know that game? CS == game, HL2 == game(best game ever)... hrm, i wonder what will have priority when HL2 launches

I think this has basically been said, but the videos are not important to Valve. Their interest in distributing them is to give Steam a few run throughs with peak download demand before they release CZ and HL2 on the platform. Gawd, I really hope they release CZ first (start of Sept?), so the bugs in Steam are a memory when HL2 is released.

I like Gabe's comment (in an email refuting the HL2 delay rumour) that if CZ is delayed significantly past HL2's release there would basically be no point in releasing it, and they'd just scrap it and port it to Source. The bad news is that CZ is already irrelevant now.

If Valve doesn't make a delay announcement before August, I think we can be fairly certain that they will not delay it.

Besides, if they were falling behind on schedule they wouldn't spend time releasing stupid videos for a bunch of geeks to enjoy :)

LoneDeranger: was that you I saw on #Steam yesterday waiting eagerly for the release of the videos?! ;)

CZ is a giant waste of money if you buy it, when HL2 is released CS2 will be in development very quickly, making CZ look like crap

Sorry to make this a CZ discussion, but it does speak to the whole topic of Valve's current release strategy. The way I see it, CZ is clearly being positioned as a 'B' title. I read from somewhere (I think a CZ preview on Boomtown, that CZ will cost much less than the average game. Valve know that the game is past its "sell by" date even before its released, so they just what to get it done.

From what I've read, Ritual have actually made the game much less ambitious than was originally planned by Gearbox (or whoever before that). It's basically a single-player mod for HL/CS. But the marketing machine must do its duty and make it sound as good as possible, but we all know, alas, it will suck.

If they delay it's usually because they are working on the product to make it better.

Blizzard I think is the greast example of this. Every game they've released has been a hit, and they are always delayed. Hell, just a few days ago Starcraft: Ghost was delayed. But it's because they want the game to be finished and bug free.

If Valve delays chances are it's because they want us to have a more enjoyable product. SO don't worry about it.

Hey i think you're pretty using the words "doesn't bode well" seriously dont say that again and because there vids arent when they wanted to release um doesnt have anything to do for when the game is released homo.

Heh. The last word in your post gives such a positive image about you. :)

they never actually gave a release date for the movies. they just said "sometime this week". everyone just assumes it will come out the first day of that week.

Gabe did actually say they'd be out monday, then someone else said within the week.
