this is getting strange

What the hell 'would' he say? I'm not going with you guys, return me to my unit? And be beheaded? I bet you he's going to try to escape if they really let him go because he denounced the american forces... and try to find his way back to america.

what an odd story this is turning into..
I wouldn't describe it as 'odd'. Every army has deserters.

an aside: the idea of muslims living in utah is kinda funny, i have to admit.
That's actually quite logical: Utah state law allows polygamy. A very small minority of christians and muslims find that normal practice.

well, it's not certain that he's a deserter, personally i find the whole event fairly unusual.

um, no it doesn't. polygamy is illegal in all fifty states, in many it's a felony. utah probably doesn't enforce it as strictly though. are the hassouns polygamous anyway?

My bad. I'm not from the US. The cliché picture here in Europe is that Utah's the polygamist state. I just made the connection; it's a bit judgemental, I admit. No offense meant tho.

Just like Idaho is the potato state? :E

No, it is illegal. I live in Arizona and there is a small group of people on the Arizona/Utah border who practice polygamy illegally. A sad situation as many of the women are married underage (read: 13 years old) to 35 year old men. I don't see why the states of Arizona and Utah can't put an end to it.

Christians don't practice polygamy. Where did you hear that? That's utter BS. Christians who practice polygamy aren't Christians at all..

doesn't mormonism fall under the umbrella of christianity?

Christianity isn't a blanket term you know... it's a specific religion. There have been seperate, very different religions that have sprung from that... but they certainly aren't christian.

EDIT: That's my belief anyways.

Exactly right. Christianity is its own religion, there's no different types of Christianity (there are, however, slightly varying beliefs [ie. soul sleep, pergatory, etc], which is why there are different types of Christian churches. Not sure what to say about them, as I've only ever really attended non-denominational churches)..

Mormonism isn't the same thing as Christianity, it's a distorted version of the religion. Your afterlife involves you being the god of a planet in Mormonism. :|

are you sure? i thought protestants, catholics, and lutherans were all demoninations of the Christian faith. i've never heard of anyone who was "just a Christian". sure, all these religions have varying differences but they all follow the same basic Christian belief.

okay, whatever. i'm not a theologian (and i doubt you are, too) so i'm not going to get into a religious debate with you.

I'm not trying to argue <chuckles> i'm just saying.. that many people 'do' consider themselves ' just a christian' :)

Anyways, lets all get back on topic. Heh.

Tell me, what’s the difference between Baptists and Christians? I mean both believe basically in the same thing, with different prayers maybe, but still. When I came to USA, it was so strange to see so many religions that try to be different, but yet basically the same. Confuses me a lot.

that's kind of what i was thinking.

lol.. this isn't where i expected this thread to go. anyway, my too-sense: i'm sure lots of sects of every religion think other sects don't represent the "true" religion.. as far as i'm concerned, it's an entertaining side-show. as far as polygamy goes, i'm no theologian either, but is polygamy specifically called out and spoken against in the NT or OT?

lol me too

i could care less whether or not the bible says anything about polygamy, personally.. just kinda curious as to why it's illegal. seems like one of those laws that emerged out of some moral code since it doesn't make any logical sense to me that it's prohibited.

It would seem that his captors, being motivated by religion, decided not to kill him because he is a muslim (isn't he?).

Yeah well he is Lebanese so that's a probable "yes". The marines would go apeshit if one of their own were beheaded and they're already wound up. Poor guys, it's a messed up situation.

i think our country's legislation is, for better or worse, based on the bible's teachings.

Wouldn't be surprised if they released him unharmed. I hope he goes back to the U.S. forces & get some equipment & then returns, guns blazing
