This may be the Wii U's killer app and it's not made by Nintendo - ZombiU

  • Zombies are the slow kind.
  • One bite and you're infected (dead).
  • You don't get to customise your character. You get a random name, age, job, appearance, clothes and sex.
  • When you die instead of going back to a checkpoint you spawn as a new survivor and must hunt down your previous character and kill their zombie to loot their equipment.
  • Friends are alerted to when you are killed and go hunt you down and loot you in their own game.
  • The Wii U tablet acts as the inventory management screen, map, scanner and lockpicking interface. The game world does not pause while you rummage through shelves or lockpick so you have to make sure you have enough time to accomplish those tasks before starting them.
  • There are special/boss zombies.
  • Multiplayer modes include a Zombie Master mode (and yes, that is what they are actually calling it) where one player uses the tablet controller and sees the map as an overhead view and spawns zombies to attack the players who are using the Wii U Pro controllers. Sounds familiar...

Sounds great as a concept (except for special/boss zombies, **** that, not sure why that's listed as though it's a positive), but I'm not sure about the general controls of moving about and aiming. They didn't really show how it was done and it certainly looked clumsy from that POV. Also, having the tablet be a disconnect from the action is really cool, but apart from being just a gameplay factor of having to stop and do it and be exposed, I think it being its own object gives the chance for a greater sort of immersion than "hey here's some tiny item icons in one row, flick into the other row".

App?

Come on Riom.
It's a commonly used term to signify a software product that justifies or fuels the purchasing of the platform that it uses. It's been used since before the word app became associated with iPhones.

Just a list of the important information. Wasn't intending it to be positive or negative. If there was anything else that I thought stood out I would have included it.

Killer Freaks would have been more interesting, but everyone knows a "gritty" zombie game sells
