Phil Harrison, Sony’s increasingly high profile president of SCE Worldwide Studios, has given an interview to German magazine Der Spiegel, as translated by consumer website GameSpot, in which he has again discussed the concept of the PlayStation 3 as a computer,...

Harrison suggested that the use of the Linux operation system, hard drive and the Cell processor would lessen the importance of the PC as a home media center. “We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other computer functions. The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC,” claimed Harrison.

hmm, I wonder if the ps3 can do my banking, input my hydro metre numbers, file my taxes, create a poster that's overdue at work, load up my ipod, download a game trailer from norway, and read the latest article bashing sony?

to be fair, they may allow 3rd party implementation of linux, but it's not for everyone ...seriously sony stop telling us what we can do, and show us instead ..I'm NOT investing $700 on a one trick pony

If PS3 had a keyboard and Valve made games for them, ...... maaaybe.

That aside, no.

Wow.

I fully support Sony because each of their consoles have rocked. But statements like these... and the price point... and the Wii...

lol stfu phil, k thx.

Can I constantly update my Playstation with the very latest tech? can I play Crisis on PS3? I think not.

Which it makes me wonder, Can PS3 even handle Crysis without downgrading it?

With the PC's you can upgrade anyday of the week, but with the PS3 you would have to wait 3-4 years.

Tough choice.

I thought the whole advantage of consoles is that they were supposed to be simple. From a developer standpoint, multiple hardware versions wouldn't be very attractive either. IF consoles become too much like PCs . . . then you might as well just get a dang PC.

Plus DirectX in all its wonder will never end up on the PS3 or Linux.

Besides, I dislike Linux with a passion. I'll stick with windows PLZKTHX

Almost as dumb as Peter Moore saying this:

Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that.

But seriously, these big corporation handjobs are full of it. I know they've got some fast machines or whatever, but PC tech and functionality has already long since surpased any so-called "next-gen" console system. Oh well--they gotta eat too! :hmph:

So, I guess the Sony VIAO series is being discontinued then.... because it'd be silly to make computers, if we don't need them anymore. :p

I told you guys almost a year ago that Sony was trying to replace Windows PC's. :borg:

It's really a joke, just like all their movies, their TV's, their laptops, really, everything they do and just like their PS3 computer.

Sony could make 2 billion dollars a year just off of Blu Ray licensing if blu ray is fully successful. Meaning = everytime you buy any blu ray, Sony gets money. Even if you buy a Pioneer brand player, Memorex discs, and a movie from Universal Pictures, Sony gets money all three times.

There is no way in hell I'm putting 2 billion dollars a year in Sony's pocket when I haven't bought anything from them! They will never get a dollar from me. They will never take me alive! They are the middle-man. Eliminate the middle-man and you pay much less. The only thing the middle-man does is skim free money.

Isn'r blue ray a joint venture between different manufacturers.
Yes. One company does the protective coating, one company does this or that, but it's sony's disc.

What does that even mean? Here are the major players on the Board of Directors:

Apple Computer, Inc.
Dell Inc.
Hewlett Packard Company
Hitachi, Ltd.
LG Electronics Inc.
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
Pioneer Corporation
Royal Philips Electronics
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
Sharp Corporation
Sony Corporation
TDK Corporation
Thomson Multimedia
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney Pictures
Warner Bros. Entertainment

Sony's Disc? Everyone gets some. Seems fair to me. A lot more people than just Sony have a lot to lose here.

And what Phil is talking about is what everyone has been talking about with this new gen of consoles: A media center for the household where everyone can access everything they want to. There is nothing new here except that they aren't saying that you can connect to your Windows PC. One day this sort of thing might be possible if PCs and consoles blend into each other even more, but that's not likely now.

These people thing people are that dumb....wait they are....

Most of the things you listed can be done via internet browser ... so yeah the PS3 can do a lot of that stuff. Also, it supports PC mice and keyboards I believe, which helps. Depending on how it implements Linux it might actually be able to do just about everything you can do on a PC.

Of course it won't replace PC's, but it's the very opposite of a "one trick pony." It's designed to be sold as a multimedia center with a lot of PC features. And did you genuinely get upset about that very overhyped statement from some PR guy ... or did you just want to use it as an opportunity to say you won't buy the console?

That Phil Harrison guy is full of crap, just like pretty much all of his PR brethren. Being a multimedia center with a few PC features is a far cry from "replacing PCs ololololol!111!". So is this guy saying I'll walk into an office a couple years from now and see everyone using PS3s?

Blu-ray will crash and burn just like Betamax did, sure it's better than HD-DVD specwise, but HD is already out there and you don't need smarts to work out what it is.

The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC
i dont think so, how stupid to say that
windows is the No.1 system over the wolrd ( even if lunix is better that it )

Vista will rock'em all

No, they didn't say they think the PS3 will replace PCs, they said the PS3 with it's features (Linux, hard drive, and the ability to play games, movies, browse the internet among other things) will lessen the importance of the PC as the media center, so for those functions listed above, the PS3 will make a PC as a media center not needed.

Correct myself here, Universal Studios is actually an HD-DVD exclusive.

Sony's Disc?

What does that even mean?

What does it mean when I say it's Sony's disc?
Blu-ray is an optical disc format developed by Sony

Sony's disc. Sony will be the one to profit the most from Blu-Ray - if it becomes a profit.

I'd rather have this, but it might be too expensive:

Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD)

These discs have the capacity to hold up to 3.9 terabytes (TB) of information, which is approximately 6,000 times the capacity of a CD-ROM, 830 times the capacity of a DVD, 160 times the capacity of single-layer Blu-ray Discs, and about 8 times the capacity of computer hard drives with space that accounts for year 2006 standards. The HVD also has a transfer rate of 1 Gbit/s. (40 times the speed of DVD). Optware is expected to release a 200 GB disc in early June of 2006[This month], and Maxell in September 2006 with a capacity of 300GB and transfer rate of 20 Mbyte/sec
It works by using twin lazers that combine into a focused beam.

Meh. They dont even put enough cool special features on todays DVD movies to warrent HD-DVD/Blu-Ray!

How about NO, would only ever if i could do all the shit i do now on it, in other words play source games on it.

How about **** phill harisson and his playstation, and keeping my pc. Had to say it, I know i'm rarey this hostile but i'm getting sick of statements from MS/Sony ceo's that are just downright idiotic.

Not on PS3, but Valve announced a while back that it is creating multiple source games for the Xbox 360.

Valve announced it is developing multiple games for the Xbox 360, and that all would support "integration with the Xbox Live on-line game service." The games will use a "customized version" of Valve's proprietary Source game engine.

While praising the platform, Valve CEO Gabe Newell was coy about the details of his company's Xbox 360 projects.

lol.

Actually, Nintendo has some of the most ridiculous quotes ever. While I can't be bothered to look them up, they are something like "nobody cares about on-line multiplayer games" among other things.

You believe that? Windows isn't number 1, in terms of reliabilty, functionality, freedom, etc it sucks.

The day it can take a piss for me, I'm buying.

Coz that's what will revolutionize the gaming experience.

Most things the PS3 does a PC can do better. It reminds my of the PSP, all it's special features that most people's phones can do nowadays.

I don't see myself buying a PS3.

Wii, maybe. PS3, no. Xbox360, no. PC? YES.

It's meant to replace media centre machines, not actual PC's that are used for a billion and one things. Now back to finishing my homework.

I'm not taking advice from a man who says "RIIIIIDGE RAAAAACER!"

I think there is a world market for maybe five computers, lawl

Sorry Phil, but you're approaching it from the wrong end.
A computer starts with a blank canvas and builds upward from there. Anything and everything is possible. Open format.
You're trying to build it backwards, bolting on more and more features until you've got everything.
Fail.

Screw the PS3, I'm not paying £400 or whatever for a console. I'll be getting the Wii I think.

Its true. Its not like in a couple of years time you will be able to put a new GPU in any of the new consoles. They are already behind when they release and do nothing but get further behind the technology with every passing day.

Still, I am excited to see developers start leveraging the power/innovation of these next-gen systems. I think we will still be 'wowed' by them in a few years time.

That go's for a lot of machines, dvd players, all next-gen consoles, and yet people still have dvd players, still have consoles. Hmmm, I wonder why? Maybe because consoles and dvd's are more user friendly, a lot less expensive.
There is nothing wrong with his statement, there is nothing wrong with using the enormouse amount of power of the ps3 to do other things then just play games, it does not take away from it's gaming capabilities, it merly requires some extra software. They have a different philophy then Nintendo, it may not be one you agree with, but like always you people just can't let an opportunity to bash sony go.

Or maybe we just think it's silly to suggest a wrong-way-round device can ever actually replace or perform the functions of a PC.

Don't get me wrong, I love consoles - but they're like DVD players - specificly designed to do one thing very well. That one thing in this case is gaming. They're cheaper for it. This doesn't mean that they can't have other functions, but it is pretty stupid to try and build one up into a PC and then say 'you don't need PCs anymore'.
