Traptown questions

It seems to me that the 'shooting at the washing-machine' problem and the 'boards breaking before they are actually hit' problem are similar.

The timing of a lot of things were off in that video, possibly because all the movements of the player and the environment appear to have been pre-recorded or something. Not to mention that the AI and damage were toned down excessively.

I dunno, don't ask me.

I'm sure that like the smashed boards though, these problems have been fixed over the last year or so.

Aknot: I have the exact system you described, with a gig of RAM. I haven't found much to slow it down with yet, and the prices are perfect for cost/power ratio. I would go for the 128 version of the 9800 though, although I did hear a rumour that VALVe mentioned releasing larger texture packs later to take advantage of the extra memory. That's just the vague impression I got though, can't say it's official. One thing I can't stress enough is to buy a good monitor. I upgrade my system with a new component at least once a year, but the monitor usually lasts 5 years without replacement. I've spent more money on video cards than this one time purchase of a kickass 21" monitor. It's the only suitable compliment to a $300-500 video card.

About the video -I agree with Mechagozilla... I think the timing was just off. Perhaps in real time all those shots/reactions would be a little more choreographed. Anyone notice the individual splinters on some of those boards physically rolling around after being smashed? Amazing :)

Throughout all the videos, the AI does what i will call 'supressing fire'. Before the dumpster falls, the combine are firing over their heads at your last known location. Notice they don't try to fire into the wall like idiots. When you pass the window with the blinds on it, a combine fires throug the hwindow and hits the blinds, even though you are not directly in front of the window. the combine knows you're up there, he just can't get a good shot on you, so he does the next best thing. Also notice he doesn't just shoot into the wall like he knows your exact position.

Exactly. That's what is in the videos. You just have to pay attention!

This thread is pointless..

Does it really matter?

First it's only a game, and second it's not even out YET!

I don't really see what the problem is with an enemy shooting at some position where the player is not at.

Do you guys really think that's shit AI? It would be shit AI if the enemy always knew where you were (which is kinda easy to implement isn't it?).

A combine laying down cover fire to prevent Gordon from running up the stairs while the other tries to kick down the door seems pretty amazing to me.

woooooo Me back had to get some sleep.

Xtasy0,
"i wrote out a big response but i realized it doesnt matter how logical it seems i wont be able to convince you or anyone else who is bound and determined to think the player was off cue, or moved there to make it seem like he was getting shot at or anything else, so i won't bother."

Sorry you are wrong. Some (most) may not but I do value almost ALL logical responses. It stimulates the mind.

lhauert,

No its not pointless. I was curious posed a question. The falling container is pretty "bad" AI if you ask me. Or it at least APPEARED that way. Maybe it was "scripted" just for us. But I hope it is not like that in game. Meaning everytime that container falls "X" amount of enemy will die. That is a "script" part of the game I can live without.

BigE,
"A combine laying down cover fire to prevent Gordon from running up the stairs while the other tries to kick down the door seems pretty amazing to me."

Sounds good to me. Like I have said though it just semed "wierd" watching it.

So any explaination on the enemy running under the falling container?

Spyre,
Yup have 2 21" monitors, 1 in reserve and a 17 inch as my secondary screen. I will be ordering the 9800 256 come the first of next month. My wife "gave" me the money so I figure shoot the wad. Took me a little while figuring out the voltage stuff for the proc speed. Why cant people make it where it sees the chip and configures that stuff for you? I figured ASUS would be on top of something like that.

maybe they made the ai go to it for a reason....the reason to show off how they can die! i mean not jus by your weapon, but by the phsics.

this is just a big movie to show you what the game is like and what u are able to do.

Gabe specifically said that the AI was flagged to not pursue Gordon up the stairs, and that the enemys were also flagged to hang around where the dumpster would land.

I can accept all that really I can. It just looks "bad". I would have rather seen the bad guy try to avoid the container instead of run head long into it. The physics on the I beam, killing the others was good enough for me.

Jesus christ, ITS ONLY A PRESENTATION THING. It will NOT be in the final version. Use your ****ing head.

Valve "hinted" at the AI to be in the right place. To, it looks like the AI does try to run away then thinks "Oh hell, Valve told me to stand there when it falls" and runs back.

Probably in the real game they'll run away. The Demos were meant to show off things.

Yeah it was just a presentation, other things you may have noticed.

The enemies accurcay is almost 0 they shoot at everything but Gordon, its because its a tech demo not a gameplay video.

And the player doesnt't even take damage when hit (maybe a 1 or 2 points off of the HEV suit power).

Oh yeah... I remember a pretty funny theory in which the enemy had something against washing machines...

The Combine soldier's father/mother had died in a freak washing machine accident, and thus hates washing machines.

Something like that. I laughed a bit when I read it, but can't remember who wrote it. It was funny. :)

I don't think he knew where Gordon was and was just firing into the room in a random way.

Or, perhaps, his mother died in a freak washing machine accident and couldn't contain himself once he saw the washing machine.

Hey, really you can do one of two things, ignore post like this and it will keep your blood pressure down or suck a bullet which will have the same effect. It matters not to me. But to give a response like that when people are "talking" does nothing for the conversation. I saw and read your first response and accepted it and said I still did not "like" the "PRESENTATION THING" as you so eloquently put it. I never said the game sucks the AI sucks DOOM RULES. I just said it looked bad, and questioned it.

Some of you people are taking this game like it was your own little egg ready to hatch and are defending it tooth and nail whenever anyone brings up little itty bitty "apparent" flaws.

I find it strange that they set the damage levels that low, even for a demo--why not just do God mode? The soldier on the stairs by the vending machine and the guy out the window can't seem to hit Gordon much at point blank range anyway, even before reloading and the radiator gets torn off the wall.

Also, anyone else notice how Gordon seems to walk right through the flaping blinds? Perhaps they're set only to be moveable by gun fire, not the player, but I can't imagine how that must look from another viewpoint. You'd think that all those bullets would tear them up a bit.

Didn't we hear that the timing/sync issues were fixed for the bink videos? When Gordon whacks the headcrap leaping at his face, his swing timing doesn't seem right to me; also, there's not much feedback to tell you the crap dies.

You'd think they would have the AI set on full for the videos, to show off what it's capable of, why show us shitty combines who just point at you rather then shoot (ala barricade)?

They should be trying to show us what the full game is capable of, maybe this is what the final AI will be like, i doubt it though.

If you think they turned the AI off because it would be too hard, then why not just put on godmode, like someone said.
