whenever any of my source engine games get minimized, usually CS:S, i get a message that says
--------------------------------------------------
Engine Error
failed to lock index buffer in CMeshDX8:LockIndexBuffer
[OK]
----------------------------------------------------------
so then i hit OK and then i get THIS message
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Counter-Strike Source: hl2.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x2417a02b" referenced memory at "0x00e82ed0". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
[OK]

this is pretty annoying whenever i'm trying to coordinate matches using AIM or if i get a popup or error message from another program that may be running in the background.

this problem occurs even when i'm in the menu screen, so whatever that means...in addition, i've been able to minimize my games without problem in the past.

I'm running Windows XP, P4 2.66 Ghz, Radeon 9700 128mb, 1Gig Rambus Ram. Running Catalyst 5.5.

If anyone has any idea what's going on, I'd appreciate your help.

thanks! :bounce:

my game crashes sometimes when i minimise it, my game can run on high, so its prolly not my specs

i just think its that you have the game running in the background and your trying to use AIM or whatever, could be talking up to much processing power and therefor it crashes the game.

Catalyst 5.5 seem to have caused loads of problems...try going back to the 5.4s and see if you still have the problem.

I always use alt+Tab and the game is still okay. I must be pretty lucky. lol

hm i guess i'll try reverting to 5.4s, i'll tell you all how it goes. thanks for the advice:)

i just use the windows button takes forever to get back to the game but it beats ur crashing problem isnt that usually caused by memory overload or something like that

Tabbing out in source games is pretty hard on the computer, if you need to coordinate matches, tell your friends to get xfire.

okay the older 5.4 cat drivers don't change anything

this is bugging me because it was WORKING PERFECTLY before, i've had the game ever since it came out, but just recently it has began to crap out.

Try defragging, and get rid of any program you've started running in the background recently. You might want to check your fans, too.

This happends to me sometimes as well, so I do everything I can to not get any programs popping up with messages, so I only have xfire running in the background, along with teamspeak and an overlay program for TS, this works exellent. However sometimes I need to tab out to switch rooms or kick people in TS and sometimes it breaks down but not often.

Anyway heres my point at last: When I ran without virtual memory it broke down and made that error almost every single time i tabbed out or pressed the windows button, so if your running without virtual memory this might be the issue or maybe ur running with too little thus you dont have enough virtual memory?

1 gig of ram and 4 gigs of pagefiles must be enough though and I've just got this error too. It's part of a string of never before experienced error messages i've had since that last shitty update, which also added jitters in sound/fps..

Video Settings

The same error occurs on my system and it is related to the advanced video settings. This problem did not occur until I reached Chapter 4 in HL2: Episode 1. Once Chapter 4 loads, the engine crashes. However, when all settings are set low, the level loads fine. If I attempt to increase the video quality after a successful load with lower settings, the engine will still crash when the higher settings are applied. I have not determined which specific settings this problem is related to.

I can run HL2 just fine with settings maxed out. When I run HL2: Episode 1 with the same settings, I have problems with audio quality and frame rendering.

I'm running WinXP Pro SP2; DirectX 9.0c; AMD Athlon XP 2700+; 1GB RAM; Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS 256MB (Forceware v91.47)

I had the same error. Here are my specs:
Manufacturer:Asus A8R-MVP *Crossfire*
Processor:AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz (2,0 default)
Memory:1024MB RAM DDR
Video Card:ASUS X1600 Series
Operating System: Windows XP, SP2

I fixed it this way:
1. I overclocked my cpu and my memory clock. And i fixed some other stuff in the BIOS
2. Wait a min bevore you minimize, give your pc some time to get all everything in your memory, and dont start new programs, becous then that will need some memory, and so (maybe) css will lose some and crash.

It workes fine for me now.

i dont really understand?
