Tunnels- Thoughts

Yes. :D

Rag doll is client side because you'd have to send insane amounts of data to do it server side. Everyone will still see the ragdoll death - just not necessarily the SAME ragdoll death.

You are 100% right .. although I'm wondering exactly how that is going to work. For example - what if the body falls on some boxes and brakes or moves them? The falling would be done client-side but the box breaking would have to be server-side cause it effects the gameplay. Hmm.

Like the way teh man hack leaves marks on the bookshelf, they look a bit biffy. The puddles are nice at the very beginning aswell.

One thing, the sparks from the first man hack are rectangles. What fkin shape are sparks normally?

Ugh, that is one ugly screenshot :(

I liked the video though

the only thing i noticed was the difference in shadow placement in certain parts. i dunno if it changes due to the demo playback but certain parts looked much better in the e3 vid. here are some pics.

When does a glowing tentacle cast a shadow?

The best vid out yet - the man of fire looked great, im sure that will be my fav. gun.

hl2 is gonna own.

When the video first starts there is what appears to be a progress bar of some sort with the number ten next to it. Any ideas on what this might be? I think it's some sort of map system to help navigate.

I have downloaded the vid from fileplanet.com.

Anyway, there is one small problem with the graphic, the walls, floor, woods, pipes all of the surrounding environment has a feeling like you are watching a cartoon; the colour does not seem right, not vivid quality, in other words it has not any bump mapping applied to the texture. The models, hydra water looks awesome. I hop valve will apply bump mapping technology to the walls and floors.

One more think, why the first flying blade have blood when Gordon hit it by his crowbar?

Maybe its a cyborg. That old blood still looks crap though.

OH yes what the hell I am doing.

The graphics is one year old or maybe less, so valve is definitely now applied the bump mapping technology to it. But I wonder why they did not release the vid with this tech?

Didn't you notice all the dead guys in the tunnel on the ground?

/me thinks thats how they died.

i think another one of the reasons it looks cartoony is because of how exceptionally exaggerated some of the effects are. the sparks thing is one. you hit a metal thing with a crowbar, and its blades scrape against your crowbar. sure, ok. then thousands of sparks fly out. massive, square sparks. wtf?

the shape of the spark depends on the material that makes up the spark, and unless the manhacks (teehee) were covered with thousands of squares of magnesium, i doubt it'd look like that... it is kinda nitpicky, but little things determine how successful the immersion is. i think it'd look a whole lot better if only a few, much smaller sparks flew out, and if the sparks were smaller when they were all scraping against the fence.

another exaggerated effect is the way things catch on fire. unless what that gun shot was a capsule full of napalm or gasoline, the combine soldier's *entire body* would not instantly erupt in flames.

other than those pickinesses, i liked the video. it was a bit short, though :( also, when i play, i'm gonna go see what's down the hall that those manhacks came out of :p can't really tell in the video...

But I wonder why they did not release the vid with this tech?
that makes me wonder, too. why would they release media that makes their game look less impressive than it actually is? seems a little too convenient to blame every graphical imperfection on an old build of the engine when i can't think of anything that's stopping them from using the new, improved engine to make the videos.
and if these videos were recently rendered for the full-screen versions, then what you see may be one of the most recent builds of the engine at work. it's possible that a large part of the little problems we see will end up not being fixed for the final product.

No I did not see that...I will play it again and see.

Also I think the blood splat might be from Gordon because I think this suite power goes down a point at that time...

That looks like ammo, he picked up 10 dildos... or some ammo to the "flare gun" or whatever it is named :p

This video is DEFINATELY in the top 5 videos released on steam =P

I didn't read through this whole thread so I'm sorry if this was brought up already. Did anyone notice the torpedo or missile looking thing in the corner when the video first starts? Wonder if it's a weapon of some sort?

Why doesnt someone just email Gabe Newall and ask him if the vids are from the newest build? And mention the problems that people found (square sparks... blah blah...)

DAMN YOU IGNORANT PPL. :)

THE STEAM VIDEOS ARE FROM SEPTEMBER 2002 THEY ARE 1 YEAR OLD.

HL2 SHOULD LOOK A LOT MORE DETAILED WITH FIXES WHEN YOU FINALLY PLAY IT IN OCTOBER OR DECEMBER.

go watch the old 600 mb e3 video. during the techdemo the guy speakign explains how they use bump mapping, he looks at the floor and you can tell there is bump mapping. thnx ok bye.

E3=New
Steam vids=HELLA OLD

my point- no worries

all this is rumor or guessing, has anyone asked gabe newall if the vids are from an old version? or asked him why the lack of bumpmapping? etc..

It looks like a missile to me. It's definitely ammo, as the guy at the top of the page said. When he picks up the combine soldier's pistol clip, a very similar icon (except a bullet shape) pops up in the same place with a number in the same place. I think it was some kind of rocket ammo...

One inherent difference between the demos and the E3 footage is that the E3 footage was just being displayed on a monitor and recorded by a video camera.

The demos might have been recorded with something like FRAPS running in the background, so they may have turned off some of the fancier features like bump mapping to keep the frame rate up while recording.

They have said before that a lot of the sprites/effects (blood, sparks, etc) were just placeholders that were taken from HL1 until they could make better ones... rest assured that the quality should be much better in the final version.

The sound is a bit unsynced for me but I really love this video! :afro:

Oh yes... I almost forgot about that.
If it hasn't been mentioned before, good. If it has... too bad.

To everyone: If the videos are jerky or slow you should download the latest RAD tools, open the videos through them, go into "Advanced play", and change the "Blitting style" to DirectDraw... then hit play and the video will run much more smoothly (especially on slower machines).

The default blitting method is horribly slow but it works more often than the DirectDraw method.

...

Not sure wheather u guys noticed this, but is that a slightly differnet video to the one that was in bad quitly - becuase if i remember correctly when he shoots that combine soldier with the grenade launcher i swear he falls down, and not just lays there. i could be wrong though. also when he gets to the 'tenticles' (srry forgot what there called) in the water all the 'sand' is flat.... and i remember it being kind of spiked? so are these some cool improovments... if so thats cool :p

sry if im wrong or tlking aload of crap :rolling:

Shadow Stalker

it's already been said that the rag-doll effects are done on the fly during demo playback...(you will get slightly different rag-doll effects for each demo playback)

similarily rag-doll effects are client side in multiplayer games...becuase an exact positioning isn't necesary.

Pretty cool video ;)

I didnt notice before those corpse laying on the floor during the manhack sequence...

The right hand crosshair shows ammo consumption - look at the start when he begins to fire at the manhack, it gets more red the more it is fired and then it flashes red when the ammo in the clip is depleted

You know when Gordon shoots the guy and he falls and takes a railing with him ?, does that happen with ALL of the railings in the game ?, has someone e-mailed gabe about that ?

Sorry if this has been posted before

If you look at the railing, its the only one that isnt fixed in properly. Its at an angle. So perhaps its is all physics based, but the railing may not have fallen if it wasnt pre-prepared
