Turkey is just as civilized as any western country. At least the urban area's. You will hardly see women wearing headscarfs there.

But I'm not sure I want them in the EU. The EU turns into some 'want money? Get money here, completely FREE!'. We already pay the most of any country per head of the population.

And they've got a history of warring with Greece, so there will be tension there.

Plus, they're still illegally, imho, holding part of Cyprus.

I eat it all the ti- oh...

I think they should come in, after all...its like mixing grey with black hoping you won't make it darker. Turkey being grey...;)

It's better for Turkey to join the EU than vice versa. IMO the EU is loosing its strong economical position by letting all those 'weaker' countries join. I'm curious how the EU will evolve.

Btw, I thought people in Belgium are paying the highest taxes; we have to bring in 55% of our income (additional taxes not included).

Those 'Weaker' countries like Poland have faster growing economies than the stronger ones. It will be painful, but in the end I think letting in these countries will benefit the Eu a lot, as well as its individual members. Rather than waiting...

I was talking about the amount of money per head of the population that goes to the EU. :)
We've got the dubious honor of holding that record.

I'd love some turks up in here!

OH YEAH

I slept with pacman

I don't know.. some cultural things do not fit in that perfectly...

Many people from the eastern countries have strange opinions on honor and pride... which makes them offended very easily. At least that's what I've experienced from the 'eastern people' that live here.

I've been to turkey, and they are retardedly similiar to us. The females have sexier eyes though.

On a totally unrelated note: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095444/

Oh dear, a lot of people here are obviously unaware of what an uncivilised country Turkey actually is.

1915 - Turkey commits genocide against 3 million Armenians. Men, women and children murdered. No apology, no reparations, no re-education. This is the level of civilisation we are dealing with here.

Turkey still has an illegal occupation of Cyprus - a sovereign EU nation. How can they possibly join the EU?

Turkey practices murder and oppression against their own citizens - the Kurds, in the East of the country.

Turkey is not a democracy save from in name - the military takes all the major decision. This is an insult to democracy and European ideals.

If the Turks can act civilised and right the wrongs they have committed in the past I will support them, but they will never do this since they have an over-inflated opinion of their place in the world (America's pet project). The EU does not need a country like this - leave Turkey to the Americans.

If they really wanted they could set up their own Middle-East Union - at least that would be with countries they shared a culture, religion and simmilar level of civilisation with.

Germany did the same to twice as many Europeans 30 years later. I supposed that means Germany should be kicked out of the EU too huh.

They also have a massive underground (but more-or-less institutionalised) prostitution system in which women are often held against their will.

I've read that somewhere.

Er, I guess they have admitted to the holocaust and apologised and made reparations have they not?

The Turks write the Armenian genocide out of the history books they teach their children with. It has been swept under the carpet.

And what about their occupation of Cyprus? Their murder of the Kurds? Their abysmal human rights record? The institutionalised misogyny? Their quasi-military government?

Get a brain and read more carefully next time.

And isolating them is going to help?

Before the talks with the EU, the dutch prime minister which was then the head of the EU comission or something like that, every year there is a different one. Asked Turkey to aknowledge the genocide, the minister of turkey was insulted that the EU could demand such a thing. Can you believe that. How would you feel if germany had the same attitude. Turky has 60 million inhabitants, they would gain a large influence. Besides the EU is the one who should make strong demands, the turks are going to profit more from this relationship then we are in the near future.

+ the military had to make a coup de etat 3 times last century, because of the fear that muslim fundies would take over. In other words, if Turkey would be totally democratic, like the Eu is demanding( and they are, thy want the military to have less influence), the elections would most definatly be won by a fundy, and turky would be like Iran.

No lets just be nice to all the dictatorships, all the murderous regimes in the world - they were just brought up badly as a child - its not their fault. All they need is a bit of love.

With power comes responsibility - the Turks aren't willing to take responsibility for their actions? Fine - then we don't have to help them.

Perhaps if you knew more about this topic you could form a more educated opinion.

Exactly - the Turks seem to think they can invade whoever they want, commit genocide and not aknowledge it, perpetrate murder upon elements of their own civilian population and the world owes them something? Turkey seriously needs a reality check - and a hard time from the EU would be perfect.

Seems like if you are a friend of America, you can get away with pretty much anything :)

It shouldn't be closed mabye moved to... politics.

NeLi: "Stop while you can"

Yes, yes it does. It sounds like you Europeans are gettting the royal shaft from the Ecomnomically weaker countries. Same thing over here with illegal immigration. SHAFTED!

I've got one thing to say.

Turkey isn't EVEN IN EUROPE!

Neither is Cyprus, from a geographical point of view, though the citizens of Cyprus 95% are ethnically Greek :)

And Marco, you don't really want to start again do you - look what happened last time you and I had a debate on politics hehe ;)
