Turning hidden files into non-hidden files?

My hard drive recently got a virus and seemingly deleted all my files. But it turns out they're still there as hidden files, which only show up when I uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.
I've gone into properties to uncheck my files as 'Hidden', but the checkbox is faded and unclickable.

Is there an alternative way of getting them back as ordinary files?

EDIT: Turns out my girlfriend's a genius, and fixed it. Mods feel free to close down this thread.
