I don't even consider us European really, because we don't get along with most of the countries in Europe, in fact, most countries in Europe dislike each other immensely, which is probably why nothing ever gets done concerning the European Union and Constitution.
Everyone make's sweeping generalizations on this site, didn't you know? More than often they have no idea what they're talking about.
I think CNN reported the fact that America were putting a satellite into space to jam enemy radio signals wrongly, America aren't going to "control space" as such, for instance it's very unlikely that countries such as Russia or China will have to ask U.S. permission to send their Astronauts into space, it's just home defense I guess (and I can tell you if America tried to place those sanction's on either of those countries you can imagine the uproar).
America don't "own" the moon either, There's (supposedly) an American flag up there somewhere, but that doesn't mean the U.S. owns the moon.

This jamming satellite is nothing, Bush is soon going to deploy "SDI", which is basically a space based weapon designed to destroy missiles... this has two major effects. First, the US will no longer be threatened by nuclear attacks, meaning if they decided to launch a nuclear attack on another country they could do so without retalliation (the only reason Russia and the US didn't fire on each other during the cold war was because if either of them did, the other would do the same and both would be devastated). Secondly, it basically gives them a weapon they can point at anything, anywhere on or around the earth. Considering how, with Iraq etc, they basically said "do as we ask or we'll invade".... well with this they'll be able to say "do as we ask or we'll attack you from space and there's nothing you'll be able to do about it".
This system pretty much will give the US control of space (the space around earth, anyway) since they could use the system to take down any satellites they wanted, like Russian spy satellites.
I wrote a big thread about this just a few hours ago.... what the heck happened to it? It no longer exists, why was it deleted?

Such lasers have already been built and tested.. A system called "MIRACL" (a ground based laser) has been tested in tracking and destroying airborne missiles, and it was also used to destroy a satellite (it was a US satellite, destroyed for testing purposes). Laser weapons aren't sci-fi anymore.Tr0n said:

America aren't exactly making themselves seem trustworthy or look better in the eye's of the international community if they're going to be putting launch pads in space, and it certainly won't help world stability. In essence by America doing this we all lose out in a way. Also America's main enemies are Terrorist's at the moment, I'm not sure what country with the exception of North Korea is actively developing a nuclear weapons program, now if a Terrorist get's hold of a nuke chances are they'll detonate inside a city and not actually launch a missile.
Any attacks on Space Satellite's could also easily result in an all out war, and if that happens, well, we all lose again.

It's really sad that even after all this time since the cold war, and there's no really aggressive country left in the planet, just terrorists, that the U.S. still feels the needs to develop weapon programs. Also it'll be Tax Payers money that go to buy these weapon systems (and they won't be cheap), wouldn't you prefer that money to go on Education and Public Services instead of weapons?

Personally I don't see any individual country with the exception of North Korea (which I believe should be dealt with by the United Nations and the International Community, not just the U.S. alone) that is really a threat to America's national security.
The Russian's don't really care any more, Putin has no interest in starting a war with the U.S. and I suppose most Russian's have moved on, they're a republic now remember. China? Big Army, but not very technologically advanced, sure you wouldn't want to fight them on their own soil but I doubt they'll be declaring war on anyone any time soon.
It's that kind of suspicious mentality that compromises the pursuing of peace on a day to day basis, we need to change people's mentalitys concerning weapons in order to make the world a safer place. America "owning" space will do anything but make the world safer, I even have doubts whether it'll even make America safer!
