Is this for everyone, or ticket holders, or cs:cz owners?

i've heard both, but havn't anywhere about who get's to pre-load? if so, would this explain why it's monday and i don't see hl2 in steam for pre-loading?

just curious.

thx, =]

My understanding is its for anyone who wants it and you dont have to pay for it until the whole game is released.

it is for CZ/ATI users who have the free coupons that they got with CZ or the ATI graphic cards

and updates on steam like CS:S will come at 6-7pm american time so that is around 12-1am uk time

Wrong. For everyone most likely around 3pm west coast, 6pm east coast in the US.

no man

it is not available for EVERYONE!

why would valve let EVERYONE have the game for free???

it is for the ATI users who get HL2 for free Via steam or dvd.

Hmm im pretty sure youre wrong here.

Everyone can Preload it but you have to pay Valve for the critical files + Key to unlock the files. (oh and something like the old CD-Key to play online)

I seriously doubt that only ATI ticket holders will get to preload it. I don't believe there are that many of them(at least compared to those actually buying the game) and so what would the point of preloading even be? It wouldn't relieve much stress on Steam for the actual release.

any quotable 'official' sources? or has it been speculation?

1. It is rumoured that it will be available to everyone, whether they decide preload it or not is up to them.

2. Even if they preload it (and dont have an ati coupon) they still need to pay for it to be unlocked, therefore not free.

on the voucher is says you get

HALF LIFE 2 FOR FREE VIA STEAM OR YOU CAN USE IT TO BUY THE GAME! *i mean the CD VERSION/DVD.

i think everyone can pre-load it.

but ati vouchers can pre-load and play it :)

it is not free at all. yea everyone may be able to pre-load it

be wierd to preload it before paying for it.

but ati vouchers do get hl2 for free

yeah, i guess we will all know for sure then by late afternoon, ^_^ oh well.

imagine this, hl2 never shows up to be preloaded... wow, what would you do? lol. let's not jinx it.

Commando, the preload only has like textures and sound files. They're not giving away the whole game, you know, so it's pretty safe to preload to those without vouchers. They won't be able to play it because they won't have a game, just a bunch of files that don't do anything on their own.

sigh
When the time comes, HL2 will be available for preload.
If you choose to preload it, then those files will be downloaded.

There are still more files that Valve will not preload at this time.

When HL2 is released, ATI Vouchers can simply unlock the game by entering their Key if they have not already done so while everyone else can buy the game to unlock it.

So far they seem to release content around 6-7pm PDT, Valve's time.

Yep,at least last time it was cyber cafes, now the game's assets will be available to everyone - and knowing valve's weak security and lack of encryption - almost everyone will find out the plot and start posting spoilers on all community websites.

Time for my hibernation.

It will probably be for ATI ticket holders + they will open credit card sales through Steam.

three reasons why they let everyone download it

1. Valve wants to give everyone the preload because it will quarantee ultimately much more hl2's sold through steam. That is what they want because it means more money for them. This will happen: "Wow hl2 is out and i have preloaded 70% of it already, why not just buy it from steam and play right away."

2. After preload, the content will be available for download anyway. Everyone with the file can send it to whoever they want anyway. So anyone who wants the preload will have it.

3. If they would let ppl buy hl2 today through steam... they would really be in trouble if the game gets delayed any longer. I don't mean months but after ppl have payed their game they will demand to have it really soon. That would be really bad for valve.

I think I can sum up this thread: We don't know.

I just hope it all gets encrypted, i don't even know what would happen if they could use the cs: source executables to run the game.

Well, I don't think that they are including the maps.

omg people. First of all, THE FREAK exe's have been the same for over a year.
From what I know, the exe hasn't changed sinse the stolen code.
People will still try to decrypt it no matter what and they will.
It would be a huge mistake if Valve did preload to everyone because why would they waste their own money on sending it out to 6,000,000,000 people at the same time. It is faster to make DVD/s or CD's.
Yes time does matter.
If they can't get the game out. We will decrypt the file and steal it. However, the US government really needs a 800 number to call so we can **** our friends over that do it. Cause, I know one and I hate his ass. He thinks everything is for free on the internet.
That asshole does NOT have one legal thing on his computer. He goes to ****ING bull shit websites and downloads the hot games.
So, if Valve could make a 800 number for reporting people. It might save them money and they can help the entire gaming company altogether by doing so.
Scare those kids to make them think that their computer can be taken away. lol.

What...

I hope we'll get to try the video stress test once we preload. :)

Oh, and JAYZUS, WHY DO PEOPLE STILL SAY WE DON'T KNOW?! AND EVEN WORSE ARE THOSE SAYING THAT NOT EVERYONE GETS TO PRELOAD! FFS! STOP!

I think it would be wise for Valve to allow anyone to preload the static assets later today. If they don't, I imagine Steam will go down pretty fast on HL2's release. Better for Steam crap out tonight/tomorrow than on release.
