Unstoppable Steam Updates

I had this issue quite some time ago but it hadn't been a recent occurence; I'd presumed the problem had been patched out of Steam several updates back.

But, alas, I'm again suffering from unstoppable download syndrome- I can't make CS:S stop updating. Considering I'm an impatient 56ker, that's a huge bugger, as whenever I try and run Steam I'm effectively forced to download more content instead of being able to play another online game (HL2 and HL2DM are both at 100%, so it's not Source updates), since they inevitably become unplayably laggy. It'll be even worse if Valve ever try and patch HL2 again, for whatever reason.

Any suggestions? Short of deleting CS outright to resolve the issue...

I have the same exact problem, please some one who knows help us out!
Edcrab, I'm on the look out for the answer myself, if you find it first though please post back :)

Have you gone to CS:S properties and set automatic updates to "Do not automatically update this game"?

Yes, and it still updates... Thanks for trying to help though.

Perhaps if you moved the CS:S files to another location with Auto Updates off, it may keep trying to update because you already started it before and is wants to continue. But I don't really know, thats a wild guess on my part.

That might work... I'll give that a try after this update finishes... Thanks for the suggestions!

Hmm, the problem- at least in my experience- with moving the files is that Steam suddenly decides CS:S is at 0% (for obvious reasons), and still tries to update...

Fortunately, it's back at 96% since I returned my content to the correct folder, but I just don't have the guts to see what'd happen if I made a backup of an incomplete cache on CD and deleted my HD copy (not that I even know if that's possible).

I've got a nagging feeling I'd be begging for corruption, and until I get broadband that's not really a risk I can afford to take...
