Urban Exploration

Please recall this horrid discovery. I won't be able to sleep untill you tell me. :|
Ok, i was taking a walk along a track next to a river in bristol and part way along a tack was a toilet, i decided to use the toilet and inside there was all sorts of sexual graffiti and porn mag pages everywhere.......i didn't think too much of it, you know you always see things like this.

I carried along the track and i saw some old building off to the left that looked interesting, all windows smashed or boared up.
I started making my way through the forest to get to it and on my way there i heard some movement up ahead....thought it was an animal or something.

I Just ducked under some brambles and walked past this part destroyed wall and i came across a clearing with about 20 fully naked men sat around.......a few of the men were...errrrr....you know and some others were smoking and drinking, they "stopped" and looked up at me.........i just started running for my life, as i ran away i heard "OI" shouted and i kept running but didn't look back.

Thankfully i do a lot of running so i got back to the car fast and drove off.

Places like that also attract druggies, so watch you dont step on an AIDS infected needle.

Has anyone heard of, or tried a bit of "Urban Exploration"? Got any stories to share?

Basically, for those who dont know, it involves finding and then exploring places like steam tunnels, abandoned buildings/bunkers/factories etc as well as maintinance areas for large structures. (usually after hours or when noones around)

Example E-zines/sites:
http://uem.minimanga.com/
http://www.infiltration.org/
http://uel.minimanga.com/missions.html
(check out their links section for more, some really interesting missions there)

I've done a bit before, and its always fun- but you've gotta be careful not to get killed or caught. (thats part of the fun though!)

I just find something really cool about going into some deserted and dilapidated place, or into some weird tunnels and walking around.

For a nice overview, I recommend the synopsis at http://www.infiltration.org/ethics-nodisclaimer.html
sounds interesting but also kinda boring at the same time,i mean if the place is abondoned and all or is it more about sneaking into factories etc at night with security guards, how did you get into it?also whats the attraction?what kinda peolpe do it?is it more for adrenaline junkies or sam fisher wannabies?

Sam Fisher wannabe ("You dont see me, you dont see me, you dont see me...")

You never know what you might find though. And places like that often look really strange when abandoned, its like, a place that was welcoming and would give off a nice feeling, can be entirely different a few years after its been standing there unused. And its the whole going to these strange places you'd not normally go near, places that weren't really built for the general public to wander around in. So the architecture is different, and its just an overall different feel to it. And like in my examples, one minute your in a familiar area, then over the wall your suddenly in this strange place that seems a million miles away from where you just were.

Haha :D

When I go to Lincoln, I'll be doing this :)

Always wanted to - but mates are never up for it :|

You can try, but all you'll end up exploring is a Happy Meal box on the street :p

I can't think of anywhere abandonded, there was the old warehouse near the new set of university accommodation, but that's been turned into a library and possibly a club.

I'm sure there are places though

hell yeah! lol :) That site with the girl who visited all those places on her bike I thought was really interesting, so definately buying Stalker.. though I'd personally rather go there myself someday, just for the experience of it.

It was an unrelated site but a bunch of people said it was some PR stunt for Stalker. So she got lots of publicity and hundreds of horny teens trying to email and chat her up hehe.

You know, guys.. There's this factory thingie area nearby where I live, there's always people there building or transporting stuff or whatever they do. The entire area is sealed off with steel fences, and it seems to be a pretty interesting thing to check out. The thing is, once when I was having a walk around there I saw that the fence at one area had been cut up. I've been thinking about getting some black clothes, stuff and my binocular and take a closer look at it by crawling through the open fence part. There's like a hill where the fences are so I can hide on it and look at the entire location from a good view while staying hidden. Maybe I should go check it out? Perhaps it's a place of evil morbid things :O

Oh, and right, as every UEr knows, I am only going to do this hypothetically.

Do it :D That 'infiltration site' has totally psyched me up for this kindof stuff, I've been reading it for the past hour ( god bless the holidays )

This was bliink's plan all along, she's been, for the past four years secretly building up an army of commando's in Australia, and now she's branching out, training them in other countries ready for the big day where she'll take over the world and force everyone to play CS:S and wear big boots.

Me and my mates used to do a spot of this, but it involved a little criminal damage and trespassing to do so, so i'll not give any details here.

I don't want to go around at night in my neighborhood. I might get shot.

Mostly its just to satisfy basic human curiosity.

You don't need to be stealthing around, theres just something about roaming the halls of a dilapidated and condememed mental hostpital thats cool.

Its an excuse to dress in camouflage and run around in the dark with your mates though... so yay! :p

God, you people in England or whatever sure have alot of adventure around.

I live in a suburban city in the US. There is nothing like that to explore. It sounds so fun though :(

Got a shopping mall nearby? a big one? (after hours visits are fun)
Check out the sites I posted links to in my first post and you might find some ideas amongst their "missions"

I want to try to sneak into area 51 someday but uhh I think I'm going to need a kevlar helmet and a bullet proof vest lol

Wont be much good against FIVE SEVENS. barret light 50's e.t.c

Trust me, the US government has them.

If you break into any military/government restricted area you will be shot on sight.

They have lots of regular patrols there, and thermal sensors are used IIRC.
You probably wouldnt get to far before you were arrested.

Im always interested in the underground parts of cities. Does anyone know if the city of Toronto has some neat underground locations to explore?

Doesn't Toronto have a huge underground mall? It probably isn't abandoned though.

Heck if I lived in a big city I would give this a try.

I'm a night person so this could be fun.

Its fun, but try to have a group of about 3 people- thats the ideal number

Until one disappears, then you've got to split up to find them, and the shadowmonkeys pick you off one-by-one.

My mates used to use headset radios to keep in contact.

Well I don't really know how I could get 2 or 3 people.

I might be moving close or in a city if I end up living with ether my mom or uncle and aunt.

Well, me and my older brother used to go through the woods near our house and explore a construction site. That was fun. We would go during working hours, and had to stay out of site of the workers by hiding behind piles of rocks or whatever. It was pretty fun and risky.

my friend and i have actually done quite a bit of this kind of thing, didnt really think about it until now. We love finding new places to explore.

on several occasions we went to this old abandoned house in the middle of the woods that was built by an old hermit lady. she died by falling asleep with a lit cigarette and burned in her bed. the house is filled with her stuff from the 1940-50's and its incredibly creepy.

once we saw this industrial area full of factories being demolished. we always wanted to get into them, and once we saw them being taken down we figured we had to seize the opportinity. everywhere there were these massive piles of twisted rusting metal beams and various debris. we got a bunch of cool pictures of half missing factories. as we made our way to the middle of the area, we were discussing how it reminded of us of WWII. just then the destruction crew returned and fired up all of the heavy machinery. we could feel the ground shaking with bulldozers (which sounded a lot like tanks) and we had to sneak our way out.

once while we were in delaware we made our way into some of the abandoned WWII-era coastal defense bunkers. they were very big but we couldnt get too deep into them b/c we didnt have flashlights and we werent able to return.

There's a construction site I'm free to explore with out getting any legal action.

Big warehouse type thing. You can see for miles.

Aaaaaah, this infiltration stuff sounds like the kind of thing I'd love to do, except I'd have to de-program my ingrained obedience to be able to do so. Plus I live in London (the England one), and it's tough to find a place that isn't regularly walked over by dozens of people, especially towards the center, which is the most interesting part. Plus, go a-wandering too much and there's a big chance of stumbling on the kind of thing short recoil saw :x

The only thing like this I've really done was in Japan, when I went wandering down some mountain trails and ended up trespassing first on an observatory (not abandoned, unfortunately), and then a water filtration plant (again, in use) in the hills. The latter was a massive concrete amphitheatre-esque construction hacked into the mountain and it looked like a missile silo, and since I was on the verge of heat exhaustion my initial belief was that I was going to be shot by snipers. I really was lost, and so had to ask directions from some builders I found. The guy I ended up talking to stopped in the middle of his directions to have a 20 minute convo on his mobile, within which I suspected he was reporting some dickhead tourist who had got lost in the hills. At that point I still didn't know it was a water plant and so I kept listening expecting him to request permission to shoot me. Eventually I made my way back to civilisation by a further hour's walk and jumping a 10ft gate which covered me in rust stains.

That said, I'd *love* some info on abandoned shit to check out in London. Chances are my friends and I would be quite pussy about it, but I swear there's so much cool stuff to unearth beneath the veneer of daily living, that I wouldn't allow myself to let it go unexplored if I knew about it...I've read lots of stuff about abandoned Tube stations, which are so damn fascinating but troublesome to get into, plus get lost in the Underground and you really could be dicing with your life... But still, I want to see the hidden places! Secret London knowledgemeister guru of the underworld, I know you're reading this!! BEQUEATH THY SECRETS!! Put me in the loop]!!!
