European countries moved quickly Sunday to meet requests for emergency assistance from the United States, filling orders for thousands of blankets, first aid kits, water trucks and food rations for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Officials at the 25-nation European Union said they were coordinating aid shipments from across the Continent after Washington made an official and rare request for help from its European allies.

This is being run on UK news channels just now, hopefully any doubts over the international response to this tragedy will finally be laid to rest.
The international community would never dismiss the people of America nor would the American call for assistance go unheeded.

I'm glad that we can provide whatever that the US feels is required to sort out this entire mess. Hopefully, with everyone working together the whole situation will start to improve quickly. It's nice to see such help being provided for this horrible disaster.

Well, that is nice and all.

But it is still an entire week after the disaster hit.

The US has only just requested help.........an entire week after the disaster.

well, there is a thing called national pride... besides, it took a couple days before anyone actually offered aid, which tells me something....

Oh enough people. We're the f*cking United States of America. We have more money than anyone else on this entire planet, and we've got a population well larger than any European nation. We have ample resources to deal with this on our own and we can't expect the world community to do it for us.

I would have been happy with condolences, we don't need money or aid, and I'm not sure why we requested it, but obviously I'm thankful for whatever we are given.

I say, "Swallow your f***ing pride and ask for some damn help!!"

This national pride could have cost hundreds of lives. Too much pride in any one thing can come back to bite you on the ass.

Let's not turn this into an international blame game. The bottom line is that our own government failed thousands, if not millions of people.

And what a great job you guys have done.

I didn't say we were going to use those resources well, I said we had them.

WTF are you talking about, national pride?
Have you no bloody concept for what is going on ,hundreds, possible thousands of your fellow citizens are dead, your allies have offered aid and you think national pride is important.
Are you so narrow minded that you can think of nothing else other than point scoring?
People on this forum have continually pounded on about the lack of help from the international community, it was offered and finally accepted and you continue to slate the rest of the world.

There is a difference between white citizens and poor black citizens in America. If this had happened in any other city, things would have been different.

welll thats good. better then Russia they dont acceot help at all thry even lie about things

SixThree no not really and if all those people would have listend...they should have left not stay there

i'm not blaming anyone, but it seems you are, i'm treating it as a natural disaster

Lemon,

It's already been stated why hundreds of times on the news and this forum why people didn't/couldn't leave LA. They are poor. They had no money, cars, or transportation to leave.

hmmm... last i checked there was some warning before it, they could at least have gotten out of New Orleans and into nearby towns

So you want poor elderly people to walk to get out of a storm that they orignally thought wasn't going to hit LA? Remember...they forcasted that the hurricane was gonna do a short turn after it passed florida and hit Georgia and Alabama.

Yes you are.

besides, it took a couple days before anyone actually offered aid, which tells me something

You have seen fit to spore scorn on any form of help and assistance from the international community.

they had at least a full 24 hours to evacuate iirc, no, i don;t expect them to evacuate, which is why they set up the shelter at the dome, but there were plenty of people who weren;t elderly or otherwise handicapped who could've walked out of there

i said it told me something, i didn;t say i blame them at all, again, i don;t blame anyone, since you can;t really blame nature

Good grief, you guys are either way to proud or way to dumb.. Of course we need ****ing aid, otherwise we wouldn't be asking for it. Sure we have all these great resources to deal with this kind of situation, but reality check, all our resources are in the middle east right now. Don't ask me why.

Its this kind of attitude of one-ups-manship that keeps the rest of the world pissed off at us. It saddens me :( because the real people that'll get the shaft in the end, are likely the ones who would have welcomed this news with open arms.

I say thank you to all those helping, on behalf of those who can't say their thanks. Please, by all means, help humanity through this crisis, God knows we can't rely on our "leaders" to get off their asses.

Thank you 961, it’s nice to know somebody inside the US actually knows of and understands European concerns.

Well, I'll post a quote again to explain my response.

It sounds as if you're spreading the blame amongst the international community for not offering any aid.

I was always under the impression that our government helps us first before relying on foreign nations to do so. That's just me though.

You're damn right I'm blaming someone for these deaths! Especially when we have so many resources at our disposal. Someone needs to be held accountable for their actions or lack thereof.

That has got to be the most arrogant, spiteful and downright ignorant comment I have seen on these forums in a while(and theyre not known for being a hot-bed of intellectual activity at the best of times).
How far do you think the average person can walk in 24 hours? In what direction would have them march(before anyone knew the exact path of the storm)?
What supplies would you need for an eighty-mile-plus trip? Consider the heat and the uncertainty of finding enough food and water on the way(bearing in mind panic buying at service stations that are spaced out according to drivers needs, not pedestrians).

Lets have a look shall we?
Distance to Lafayette :54 miles, and still inside the possible path of katrina.
Distance to baton rouge: 73 miles (ditto)
Distance to Mobile : 133 miles (not even possible in a day on foot).
Distance to Jackson:162 miles(three days, maybe)
Distance to Houston: 315 miles( better start hitch-hiking)

The distances(even without summer heat and humidity) are insurmountable and you sir, are an idiot.

common sense would tell me to get the hell out of a city that's under sea level any way possible if a hurricane like that was coming, maybe it's just the instinct to survive, and there's plenty of small towns nearby that they could've gone to and spread out among, it wouldn;t have to be a big city

btw, i'm not an idiot, i'm just stupid.. had to clear that up for you

I would like to see icarus walk 315 miles in 100 degree weather and 90 somethin humidity. (I live in the south...so I've experienced that kind of weather.)

just tell me where and when, and i know what that weather feels like, we tend to get a few weeks like that in the summer in maryland

The people are dead and suffering because they brought it on themselves.

How very compassionate of you, Icarus.

Well, have a look at this map of the storm.....

....and try and find somewhere safe that you could walk to (to save you from overtaxing your tiny brain, there isnt anywhere).

Now. Do it now! Get up off your ignorant arse, pick a direction and get going! Put a hundred dollars in your pocket and start walking.
When(and if) you get to the 300 mile mark , find a cyber-cafe ,log in and tell us all about it.

Well, what are you waiting for? Go already.

QFT

I'm ****ing blown away by the people that can't fathom why some people couldn't leave New Orleans. And as if the fact that they didn't leave means that they deserve what they got.
****ing douchebags.

Thank you Tr0n. They didn't leave simply because they had no place to go. They're poor people.

Naitional pride? When the Russians had the Kursk submarine incident, national pride prevented them from asking for help, and everyone on board died. Lucky they had learnt their lesson with the next submarine incident, just a few weeks ago.

I don't think this is about national pride, I just think New Orleans wasn't a priority because it was largely poor.

for the life of me i cant understand why anyone would cause more trouble and make things worse than thay are its like thay said "well this place is f***d so lets go steal some stuff and shoot people" taking food for your family is one thing but a lot of them are taking everything not nailed down its a mess and i think thay could use all the help thay can get
