Using the Manipulator for elevation.

I wouldn't assume the manipulator's recoil is actually the conservation of momentum operating along the vector between the object and Gordon. Much more likely there is a defined, predictable and localised force which occurs when the manipulator discharges its energy, otherwise the recoil would be in proportion to each individual object's mass - which it isn't... Paint cans recoil the same as metal barrels... Clearly the opposing momentum of the object never reaches Gordon, only the manipulator’s own local discharge affects Gordon.

...did you read my post? There is no recoil. There is no conservation of momentum. You're trying to describe a force that doesn't exist.

Did you bother to read mine? I never said conservation of momentum was there. In fact, I think you're right, I just gave an answer which was more charitable to HL2's fiction than 'dumb physics' -ie. let's pretend that CoM is in the HL2 world in a mundane sense, it is just that the manipulator uses special anomalous energy to teleport/disperse the opposing force elsewhere...

Oh, you're wrong about one thing - the manipulator does exhibit a slight shaking recoil when it is fired which is what I called a localised force affecting Gordon...

Please bear in mind you're on a video game forum, not in a uni physics lecture, where fans will naturally bend the ostensible fiction to cover the logical fallacies rather than disparage the game they love...

The manipulator does not fire particles with a large kinetic energy to move objects, it fires particles that disturb vacume energy createing either a gravitational field or directly induceing kinetic energy on the object somehow.

If the manipulator actually fired something with enough force to move objects Gordon would go flying back when he shot the buggy. Instead it uses vacume energy around the object to lift it or push it. So in theory Gordon could stand on a box and PUSH it towards him lifting him up when it hit his feet.

However this won't be in the game because it would cause serious gameplay issues.

AHHH, I see, I'm an ass, sorry. And btw, you can use the Tau Gauss Cannon to launch yourself for a good long/high jump, just charge it up and shoot it at the ground.

What's your point about the gauss gun?

that's what I am saying

What do you mean by "shaking recoil"?

Watch any HL2 video where the manipulator is featured - you will see that it does shake slightly when an object is 'shot' forward...

This is what I was referring to when I said, "The only "recoil" that people might perceive is just the result of a weapon animation, nothing more."
