Valve Press Release - Episode 2 and TF2

It occured to me that perhaps team fortress 2 was meant to be released with episode 1. I mean what better way to sell and start off their episodic content than with one of the most anticipated games ever. However maybe they just didn't have enough time and decided to delay it until episode 2, which would mean it's pretty much finished.

Oh and:
Somebody did their maths wrong. Either that or they're being slightly economical with the truth, because 7 years isn't exactly what I'd call timely.
Haven't you heard? Time stands still at Valve HQ.

That looks great! :D
I'm hoping the sense of fun in that picture will spread to all aspects of the game. :)

Also, it will be nice to see a competitive online FPS which isn't up its own arse taking itself too seriously for a change

You would know. What is Portal? Is it a new game with new graphics, or is it like a new gameplay mode for HL2 or something?

Brilliant stuff, very excited to see this new take on TF2 like this. We are going to witness the revival of a mod pretty unknown to most of the HL community, which latched on at the HL2 point. Will be a very interesting story to watch develop.

Indifferent really. It could grow on me, it could not. One thing's for sure Valve have shown they have a more 'fun' side to them (that or they deliberately designed a game that would do well with the console lovers and kiddies)..
Maybe, but most PC gamers seem to like the new look aswell (judging by responses in several forums).. :p

I think the game will do very well on the next-gen consoles aswell.. I mean, if you get HL2, Episode 1 & 2, TF2 and Portal in 1 package, it's *huge* value offcourse.. I think it will do especially well on the Xbox 360, which seems to be the biggest FPS-orientated gameconsole, and TF2 might become a serious Xbox Live contender..

Hum, why are we absolutely sure this isn't a render ? It looks like one to me.

Because you're dumb?

EDIT: Anyway, hope those models have facial expressions. I hope.

If they will, I am so going to put the HW guy aiming his minigun right at the face of an engineer going "D:" in Gmod.

It is a new game using the Source engine.

I think valve has a veiled joke @ all the people who were talking about how their animation was similar to what was seen only in pixar studios :D

...If that's really how TF2 is going to look...
Ugh... :|
Cel-shading ftl.

It's not cel-shaded, per se.

Did anyone else catch this?

Episode Two advances the 16-million unit selling franchise, as Valve's
trilogy of episodic single player releases continues the award-winning
story of Half-Life 2. Armed with new weaponry and vehicles, Dr. Gordon
Freeman must race through a countryside riddled with an increasingly
feirce Combine threat.

New weaponry and vehicles? *Creams pants*

I'm going to bed. Wake me up when it's out.

well we knew about new vehicles, and 'new weapons' could include 'ammunition for the gravity gun' like the strider buster

Brilliant! The characters look fantastic! Can't wait for this one. TFC was so much fun. The cartoon style suits the game perfectly whilst giving it a very, very cool look. Nice one Valve ........ when's it out?! :)

looks great, but i really wanted to play Brotherhood of War :(

go play bf2 then

I welcome this new style, it makes much more sense to go about Conc/rocket jumping, getting sniper boosted, taking 40 bullets, and fixing people's armor by beating them with a wrench, with a cartoony style than with a realistic one

Besides, look at those models, each one practically OOZES style and really captures the feel of that class.

TF2:Brotherhood of Arms came out already as two different games except the renamed them NS and Bf2.

yea i welcome the new style too, it looks great, actully it looks awesome
but part of me misses Brotherhood of Arms thats all.

Anyway i still believe in VALVe, they are doing the right thing.

very cool looking. i was really concerned when i heard the "cartoony" description, but it looks very promising. looking forward to this.

cool shader they got going there(if those are accruate representations), and is it just me, or is the background a hint at the map settings... rats maps anyone?
i'm thinking they're not rat maps, but the overall style is an exaggeration of everything, not just the characters.

In my opinion it always had to go this way. Let's be honest, Team Fortress is NOT a realistic game. Team Fortress 2 therefore shouldn't be either.

They definitely went in the right direction going for this more cartoony look.

I dont like it. The graphics i mean. I guess i will have to wait and see how it plays, hopefully it will make up for the graphics.. :( . At least BF2142 is being released in 2 months, that puts a smile right back on my face :)

Bellevue, WA, July 14, 2006 - Valve®, developer of the blockbuster series Half-Life® and Counter-StrikeTM, unveiled Team Fortress® 2 and Portal, two new games to be included in its next release, Half-Life® 2: Episode Two. In addition, the studio announced its plans to deliver these products, plus enhanced versions of Half-Life 2 and Episode One, in one tremendous package for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

how enhanced ?

i'm guessing graphics, but i'm hoping it's that + something else.

hot damn, this might actually make me play TF2 (i never really was a fan of TFC, only played it @ LANs.

i've always liked this style.

Ive been dreaming of valve doing this, re the look, very blizzard meets fps, yay.

And yay for more tech updates. This is really turning into a winning formula i think, as far as releases and technology is concerned!

Thats a very nice skin/specular shader or something, valve are true artisans imo.

I laughed out loud. I personally didn't like TF at all (I hate semirealistic games) but this...I just HAVE TO try this. Plus the pyro looks freackin' awesome!

i think the image is photoshopped:naughty: ,
but my question is:

do you think TF2+Portal+EP2 will be sold for just $20?

That is because Valve fears that they will be scolded for selling an episode 2 ONLY for $20.
They were scolded in the release of EP:1

The graphic look reminds me a lot of Beyond good and evil and Psychonauts (both great games btw). In a lot of ways it makes sense for Valve to opt for a stylized look, firstly the exaggeration makes it easier for players to identify the particular character classes, secondly with realism out the window Valve can concentrate on game play and not have to worry about satisfying the incessant demands of graphic whores.

The only disappointing news is the fact that we don't get the videos till next week...

bbson_john

Who scolded Valve for selling EP1 for $20? Did Valves Mom tell them off?

what does this mean for the now relatively normal looking Fortress Forever? With their old graphics and normal looking people I'm worried they might have just lost a ton of potential gamers after all their hard work?

Oh, yes, I'm wondering too. And it clearly states that this enhanced version is also coming for PCs. They probably enhanced the graphics to be more next-gen (look at TF2 group photo and imagine HL2 with such effects, shadows and lightling... sexy! :E ).

I'm so excited and I can't wait for the videos. Awesome it's only a week not "in next few weeks"... ;)

Thanks, Valve!

Wouldn't say it reminded me of Psychonauts... because I really didn't like the style of that game  More like Evil Genius if you ask me- not that I ever played that past the demo. Hrrm.

Really want to see this in action... and/or read a few detailed previews! :p

This has to be the largest barrage of posts in recent times...

Valve is totally my God! Alongwith Homer Simpson ;)
