Valve Press Release - Episode 2 and TF2

Well, it looks great. I'll be playing both TF2 and Fortress Forever. I'm sure they'll evolve differently and both be fun.

I loved TFC and I defnitely agree with the way Valve has taken TF2, the cartoony look is awesome. Must...play...TF2.

Hopefully any enhancements will be released to us via Steam update.

depth of field going on there?

I thought so too. It's gonna be awesome if TF2 brings in all of those graphic goodies that they've been giving us. DOF, HDR, Motion Blur, etc. etc.

This is gonna rock.

Bear in mind that that picture is probably just a promotional render, and not necessarily an ingame shot.

I know it's been said a bazzilion times but great characters!
I'm so bored of all the "realism" look you get with 95% of your games nowadays, alone the screenie is a breath of fresh air.

DOF is still likely too slow for release, but the shadows in the shot are real-time. :D

Fixed.

valve probably thought, it's better to head a different direction with team based shooters ala battlefield are already filling this sub genre. so, this toy story look and feel(?) may be something to get used, but aside from this i don't think it will get any worse. ;)

i have trouble imaging what to expect from the trailer after seeing that shot. it could turn out as your new weekly morning cartoon with *pengs* shooting out of pistols and enemies falling from mid air getting huuge eyes and plumping there on the ground making funny *boink* noises.

Ingame perhaps not, but definitely rendered by the engine. Look closely at the screenshot, you can clearly see the classic overlapping shadows darkening eachother. I think only the DoF won't be present seeing as it very demanding on your PC and perhaps annoying with blurred distances (you can't really determine what the player is actually looking at and what should and shouldn't be in focus).

so wait a sec is all of this going to cost us 20 bucks.....

but will we still be able to rocket jump?

Sure is a shame that Valve would mess around with an already winning formula. It's also a shame that they would turn their backs to the few remaining of us TFC players to change it to whatever the hell crap this is. You're getting a big *UCK YOU VALVE from me.

dont even bother replying to this post peoples i'm not looking for your opinion on my post.

Ill give it to you anyways.

A lot of TFC players I know like the new style and love valve, so I think its pretty arrogant for you to make such generalizations about an entire community.

And clearly your just getting upset over nothing. You dont even know what they changed (made obvious by you saying "change it to whaver the hell crap this is") ... so obviously you dont know what kind of game it is. Who knows, maybe if you get out of your ignorant mindset you may like it.

Apparently, it is in-game and the shadows are real-time, so they've fixed at least one part of the dynamic lighting.

So everyone must agree to your views, then?

This is just fantastic news something I never did think we would see.

But I am very excited to see how hl2/e2 would look on ps3 as this is the most exciting hardware coming out this fall.

So guess I might get me a ps3 after all.

Sony must of thrown a tonne of money at Valve in order to convince them to program for the PS3, a good year or so ago Gabe went on record during a 1UP interview and pretty much categorically stated that Valve had little interest in programming for either the 360 or PS3 because of the inherent programming issues involved. Recanting on the 360 I can understand because it's using DirectX, but PS3 with it's cell processors.....another kettle of fish

A winning formula? Last time I checked, TFC was all but dead. I wouldnt call that a 'winning formula'. And dont lump me in, as an avid fortress gamer, with you - I LOVE this new direction, and am absolutely looking forward to it.

The fact is that fortress games have always taken themselves too seriously in the art department - and it makes more sense having one of these more comical characters firing a rocket at their feet and flying through the air, than it does to have some ultra serious looking soldier model.

if this guy is worried about this, which seems to be ultra-faithful, messing up 'an already winning formula', he must have been having a constant stream of heart attacks since brotherhood of arms (which differed from tf significantly) was announced

Yes I remeber that very well, must say I did not like that very much but guess he was speaking alike a microsoft exec and not a developer who want the best hardware.

So think sony have given valve a tonn of cash even guess they have more then enough allready.

They changed the artstyle. "Whatever the hell crap this is" is an expression to project my distaste for this new direction. Maybe if you get out of your ignorant mindset you would be able to realize the simple sentence posted above. Oh and by the way I do know the game, i've been playing Seven years solid.

So everyone must agree to your views, then?

Nope, i just simply wanted to express my opinion on the matter and avoid any of this crap you people are posting.

Well let me tell you about a game I had last night. (NOTE: I said LAST NIGHT because I'M still a consistant TFC player unlike alot of you) Anyways the map was Well, our team had 3 medics (not including me) and several soldiers. The soldiers all worked together to defend the flag while the 4 of us (being the medics) used concs to strategically evade the enemy while riding explosions to the flag room. Some of us would grab the enemies attention while the other would snag the flag and run back to base. THAT is a winning formula, it may not be popular with the white-wash CS gaming out there but when its actually played the way its supposed to be then you really can begin to understand. Also you make a somewhat good point about the artstyle but even you being a fortress player would know there are 2 versions of the skins. One a more serious and one a little more simplistic. My question is why make it even more simplistic to the point of it being cartoony? and why the hell wouldn't they offer TWO VERSIONS.

Oh, okay. So you just bash our opinion :p

Don't know about that one, ask what the hell they've been doing for the past seven years :p

Yeah, pretty sure shadows are now cast by actual lights, rather than just a universal source of shadows for a level.

Oh know the graphics are cartoony...oh no that will simply ruin the gameplay. I guess the world is no longer with living in.

New videos for TF2, EP2, and Portal next week?

CLERKS 2 NEXT WEEK?

OMFG best week ever.

Hello guys,

You maybe know about that, but i just want you to see that. Why? I realy don't know....

Cel-Strike Mod

Hey moron, if you can't tell from my last two posts i'm used to the same ole same ole. I'm pissed that valve would screw over the last remaining fans just to spice it up for complete idiots who don't know how to appreciate an already good game. Why can't you drill that in your head?

In-game.

Hey Gabe,

The shot you provided in your earlier press release was that an ingame shot, or a render?

Thomas Larsen

Yeah, I've had that confirmed since.

FPS titles for ps3????

why does TF2 has a comic touch. i didn't expect any thing like that in TF2, but looks good though...

My first thought is that it wont be TFC with out gibs!!

I hope they do it, but i doubt it.

So...Valve has 2 options - make a game for the (these are your words) "last remaining fans", or make a game that will appeal to a whole new crowd. An no, not everyone who doesnt play TFC is a "complete idiot". I think Valve had a pretty easy decision to make. Besides which, being the huge fan you are, you obviously weren't liking the way TF2 was shaping up before this update anyhow - so what does it matter to you that they've changed the direction further? Get a life, retard.

all games suck

i hate change. what's with the new graphics. gaming has gone downhill with this spiffy graphics thing since pong. all games that aren't black and white and involve a small moving square and two plain white bars suck.:cheese:

anyhoo, i'm liking the new look. i can't believe people are complaining, i have no idea why, they don't HAVE to play the game and if what they want is to keep playing TFC than i believe there is a game out there called TFC that they can play, no one is forcing anyone to upgrade. and i disagree that people are stilling playing TFC, i like the game and occassionally look for a server to play on, servers full of bots don't count, it's pretty hard to find a server with enough people on it to play and no bots.

Forums are brimming over with people complaining that valve have made a new game and not just made an exact replica of an old game, which is what fortress-forever is trying to be, but of course it will have the source engine which sounds like too much of a change for some angry posters. me, i have TFC already, i don't need it again under a different name. but if what you want is no change than there is the mod for you. next up is a software add-on to make your PC like a Pentium MMX with a Voodoo 2000 to relive those old days even more.:O
