Valve are trialling the idea of In-game ads by putting them into CS1.6.
The ads are not optional for either the player or the server, and the server owner does not get any of the money made from the ads.

I'm seriously pissed off, I love counter strike 1.6 and they're pissing all over it.

If it pisses off what is the majority of CS players then it's all good.

Valve ****ed us over a long time ago when they kidnapped the day of defeat team and raped them in the ass until they noobed up the game..

No..i was just being melodramatic! HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Ads were inevitable. Vomit inducing company logos/slogans and catch phrases was going to happen. Time to lube up gentleman, Valve is entering the rear!

If they did it to CS:Source I wouldn't mind, but leave 1.6 alone. It's the smoking / charred remains of what used to be a very enjoyable game, but it is still better than CS:Source.

I don't play either anymore, for the record, but it's more about principle for me.

Exactly. CS:S is their little toy they sadistically pick on and they should stick to CS:S, not 1.6

So bored of Valve lately. :x

From the same Doug L pushing these ads.
CS-Nation: How are you going to address concerns that the inclusion of ads are a form of spyware? This allegation has already run rampant with games like Battlefield 2142, a game that also features in-game advertising.

Doug Lombardi: Valve places tremendous value in its customer relationships. We wouldn?t ship anything to customers that we would not run ourselves.
Yeah, you care oh-so-much about your 'customer' relationships. :O

I'm going to write one fantastic email.

I see all the software companies are jumping on the EA bandwagon.

We'll have to flood them with hate mail![1]

[1]Again.

I find this very supprising. I wonder how they are planning on implementing them.

Two things:

1) Go play somehting crappy like Halo if you don't like it. Its their game. They're there to make money. People like you who seem to believe that if you don't like it, it's not right. The fact is they don't care if they're getting more money.
2) It won't affect the gameplay, so stop being a retard.

Exactly. If it pisses off pretty much every l33t CS 1.6 player (Like...destrukt!) then I'm all for it! Most of them are a bunch of twats anyway.

Though, these are simply in-game ads, rather than cookie trackers. Stop trying to make this into a really big deal when it all honesty, it isn't. I honestly doubt they will plaster them everywhere.

It won't affect the game play?

Have you ever played on UK2 CS servers? The first to use adverts?

Gotta pay for those content servers somehow...
Besides, it's a good business move. Ad's = income.

At most they will be billboards above the rest of the action, so it's not like you'll ever be hiding behind a Pepsi machine... though that is a good idea...

****in bash u in reel lyf **** rofl nerd

*** ;)

EDIT: In all seriousness, I'm not too fussed about it, as long as it isn't everywhere and in unrealistic locations.

Absolutely. Which would by why I don't like/play Source either. Woop, try again!

That's because both versions suck equally. Real men play Quake games...or at a stretch, UT2004...

halo isnt crappy now shut up..

You're such an over-assuming cynical moron Samon. Go repeatedly bash something else.

Edit: Yay, this thread has being destroyed by the morons again, they're doing quite well, so far it's the dupe thread and this one today. I'm out. :(

Bashbashbash. I agree though; I'm terribly cynical. But ultimately, cynical or not, the community just sucks. I'm sorry, but there it is. You don't own the game, and you need to stop crying about every little addition to it. Sure, ads aren't the greatest thing to find its way into a Valve product (and I hope it doesn't spread into SP stuff), but it isn't the end of the world. 1.6 is still there for you to play.

But that's until they make another update right?

Halo is crappy.

The only thing good it has going for it is the story.

Correction, the only thing good it has going for it is the soundtrack and.... the soundtrack. Seriously now I still listen to it from time to time, it's great.

No, you're not ;)

and Samon, don't think you've the right to toss this issue aside because it isn't part of a community you inhabit. If advertising were in the next HL episode, you'd be the first banging on Valve's e-gates. The issue here is ads in Valve games, and that's something everyone should be concerned about.

Yes.

(and I hope it doesn't spread into SP stuff)

I'd be very pissed off if it did, but as it is, I do not see that happening. Advertising in an SP Episode? I doubt it, not Valve. I'm surprised they've actually gone and turned to advertising as it is, but I just find it amusing that it happens to be the 1.6 community. ;)

I'm not worried. I'll be worried when I hear an announcement, but as it stands, I don't see advertising spreading out into the Episodes. Perhaps DM or something, but then so long as it isn't cookie tracker stuff I'm not really fazed. I can handle sub standard advertising in multiplayer games - a few billboards and posters isn't really going to detract from my experience. Though if Valve take it further, I'll be worried.

I don't like it, and I believe it is unfair to put it in a game we already own and payed for without knowing ads would be put in. Now I know that somewhere in the EULA it states that they own our soul and can do anything they like to CS 1.6 so legally it's fine, it's just a shame imo, but we all knew it was eventually going to happen.

The community doesn't just suck. I don't play as much as I used to, but the appeal to cs for me has always been the authenticity of it as an e-sport.

I know how lame that sounds, but boy CS was intense. Me and my clan buddies used to watch Demos of pro clan matches, looking at strategies and tactics and employing them into our game. We made plans for games, strategies, everyone knew exactly what they had to do, then it would all go to shit when the other team would do a fake rush to B, but it wasn't a fake, it was a real rush, he was the bomber. That was the fun. It was intense, cold and very skillful.

Then valve tried to make it something it wasn't: for example the riot shield, nobody wanted it, but they put it in to try and make it more fun for newbies. Hell, in de_nuke there are walls that don't touch the floor, flying boxes, the games got a few very annoying bugs that valve refuse to fix. Valve just left the CS community to die. But now, that they can see a way to rape it for some money, they will rape it for all that is worth.

I respect valve, HL1 and HL2 were fantastic games. But please don't ruin CS, its the most successful multi player Mod ever.

What do you mean by "Us"?

I'm not bothered. If Valve get more money to make more great games then I'm happy.

Damn 1.6 purists.

I totally agree with Solaris. I'm not a 1.6 fan (I play CSS), but either way 1.6 had to have been a good game for it to be so popular, but it seems that VALVe are just trying to get as much money as possible from it before it goes completely to pot.
I hate adverts either way in any game.

CS-Nation: Additionally, are there plans to introduce ads into the single player world of Half-Life 2? Or will this be a trial run for the program, and future endeavors hinge on how well the advertising goes over in CS1.6?

Doug Lombardi: Right now, we?re just testing things with CS 1.6.
They haven't dismissed the possibility of ads in single player.

Even if they make sense? Like having the vending machines in Office give out Coca-Cola bottles?

Yet another reason why 1.5 is the superior version of CS.

And yes, I still play it.

And for that Bob_Marley is a legend!

See it as a positive thing. CS 1.6 is getting an update. Boy, it was a long time ago since that last happened. :p
