Valve **** us Over with In-game Ads loool

Ultimately I'd like to see Anti-Game protest adverts in there. That'd be hillariously ironic.

"Counter-Strike trained Hitler! Don't be a Nazi!"

Yes, because in Lemonking's world game developers can operate without money.

Im just saying that some of you sound like Valve is a charity.
Im not even upset about this, all Im saying is Valve though it is VERY customer friendly company, also cares about money.

wow....I this actually surprises me....I didn't think valve would go this route......

Ingame ads by valve = more money for valve = more money for games and top notch people = more and better games = valve world domination

honestly, they'll do them fine. stop worrying, or acting like they betrayed us.

lol, this issue brings out the fanboy in everybody

"halo doesnt suck!"

"EA IS SATAN but Valve is ok, we want to give you our money and then we want you to earn more money by selling adspace to 3rd parties with no benefit to us!"

meh if it's billboards it's tolerable ..however should we start seeing the combine wearing nike or Dr Kleiner recommending dentyne (cuz he's one of 4 out 5 doctors) then it'll be time to uninstall steam

Itll be like
Me: Okay.. Hmm.. what gun to buy.. oh, i'll just get an MP5.
beep
Would you like a macho-fries with that? Get new macho fries at del taco! I'm lovin it!
Me: Wtf?! Thats like del-taco+mcdonalds!
presses okay.
Please enter address!
Enters next door neighbor's address.
5 minutes later...
Outside: Guy: Hey! I didn't order these fries!
Me: Hahahahaha!

No?

You guys are taking this so far...

Valve told us where the ads would be, and I'm fine with them (billboards though in-game could be questionable depending on how they handle them)

Valve cares for the customers, more than EA at least, and the money is guaranteed to go towards making better games.

If EA actually consistently made kick-ass games and listened to the customers (and invited me to play test!), then I wouldn't be as pissed if they said they would put ads in their games.

Funny - I'm the opposite. I could tolerate a few tasteful in-game ads but I'm very much against the ads on the scoreboard and in spectator mode.

I still think its wrong to put ads in games after people have purchased them without knowing it before hand.
I could go on but I've already voiced my opinion in another similar thread and see no reason to repeat myself.

I don't mind billboard like ads. Infact, I'd kinda like an ad for a 'Love Sack' in the middle of a pub.

But you know it's just an invitation to spray goatse.

Oh, the drama.

So, now VALVe is going to be the bad boy, because (OMG) it could use funds and decided to do it in a way that doesn't whore out the games like Red Alert 2 and released Renegade did?

and the money is guaranteed to go towards making better games.
Did I miss something?

EA and DICE say the money from ads should go towards enhancing the support for BF2142, and so far it's working.

we're not quite at the level of "**** you valve" ..that's still reserved for EA ..should valve start charging $ for cheats/unlocks/shitty games/tutorials/shitty games/franchise horse beating/raping of IP's/shitty games/movie tie-ins then we can finally say "**** you valve"

Time for "F*** VALVe" signatures?
That seems excessive.

Its time to sign a petition and generally kick up a fuss. When valve sees that a large percentage of the community is against this they will back down and it will just be another example of what separates them from EA.

Quite.

Valve won't back down at the 1,000 little whiny cs player base, sorry.

If they pull off the ads right I couldn't care less. Theres ads for metamod in every server that has that so I don't see the difference.

A bunch of whiney pricks signed that petition. I'd not go for it. Look at the petition for gods sake, many look like they've been signed by 5 year olds that just learned to write.

The CS community at its very best!

You know, if most of those morons quit like they intend to if the ads aren't removed, the CS community may actually benefit from it.

Valve have no right to force these ad's upon us, we paid for this game, you have got your money Valve! stop being greedy leeches just like EA and forcing ad's upon us, your so-far faithful community

I love this one. "Your oh so faithful community." Hilarity to be honest. Absolute hilarity.

Meh. I'm against ads in games, I sign a petition - there is really nothing else I can do to voice my opinion to valve. I don't play original CS so threatening to leave/cracking a hissy fit isn't going to help (does it ever?). I'm just worried about it spreading to other games.
It's not so much the quality of the petition itself but the numbers and opinion's behind it - even if the writer desperately needs to learn some grammar ;).

As for the CS community being mostly a bunch of retards - I don't know any online gaming community to be any different :(.

I don't understand what is the problem about this feature?

We pay good money for a game. Valve gets that money. They then get more money from advertising. Game still costs the same.

Im all for paying for a game that I will enjoy. I however do not want to pay for a game that Valve will be making double money on. they will certainly make enough profit from this to cover the sales cost of the game.

No ads or no price! One or the other!

That is a reason why I dropped BF2142 and all other EA games. I dont like a company getting paid twice for the same sale. Its not fair for the user...

I love the guy who created that petition.

It makes me all warm inside when I know that there is somebody, somewhere in the world who loves "his" game so much that he thinks that a petition will drive Valve away from the idea.

Don't really have anything against this, except for the path it opens up for the future, which could very well be a bad one.

Not thinking far enough here...

Later possibilities:

  • Other Valve games are a few dollars cheaper.

  • Game updates are released faster as new staff is employed.

  • Games are developed faster with the same amount of quality as new staff is employed.

I really don't get whats the problem. I really don't see it. Am I missing something or am I undereacting to something that will get valve more money (there main purpose I might add), and doens't affect anything about gameplay at all? You don't even need to read the adverts. Those in billboard form are extra cover. ;)

Ingame ads mean bigger budgets for future games, better graphics, better gameplay, better production value, better everything that comes with more money. As long as the ads don't interfer with gameplay, i'm all for them.

Bigger budget may be the same as bigger games, but the bandwagon these days is that bigger games do not automatically turn into better games.

One could just as easily say "bigger budgets means lazier devs taking more time making more pointlessly bloated games".

I'm not saying that is how it is going to be for sure, but it's not like more money to the devs will automatically be beneficial to us customers as some seem to think.

Well, you have to have a look at a company's history to be able to make predictions about that. Just compare EA and Valve in that respect alone, and you should realize why not a lot of people are angry about this. :p

I can see how some would give Valve the benefit of a doubt. If they are many then maybe Valve should consider making the ads optional...
